Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Treasure Planet" opens with a small boy deeply immersed in a storybook about the exploits of the legendary pirate Captain Nathaniel Flint. What is the child's name?

Answer: Jim Hawkins

All the choices are main characters in novels by Robert Louis Stevenson. Jim Hawkins is the protagonist of "Treasure Island", the novel on which "Treasure Planet" is loosely based. David Balfour appears as the first person narrator of "Kidnapped" and its sequel "Catriona", while Dick Shelton is the hero of "The Black Arrow". James Durieis the eponymous protagonist of "The Master of Ballantrae: A Winter's Tale". Unlike the other three novels, "The Master of Ballantrae" was written for adults rather than for young readers.

Film and television actor Austin Majors was born in California on November 23, 1995. In the 2000s, Austin did guest spots on popular television shows such as "How I Met Your Mother", "Desperate Housewives" and "Providence", as well as a semi-regular role on "NYPD Blue". In "Treasure Planet" he voiced the small but pivotal role of the child Jim, for which he was nominated for an award for Best Performance in a Voice-over Role. After high school, Austin attended the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California.
2. After the credits, the story proper begins and we see our protagonist, now a bright but unhappy and troubled adolescent, being escorted home by officers of the law. Who voices the protagonist?

Answer: Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Leonard Gordon-Levitt was born February 17, 1981 in Los Angeles, California, USA to Jane Gordon and Dennis Levitt. He started acting at the age of four, and by six had several made-for-television movies under his belt. Throughout the 1990s he worked steadily in commercials, television (including the popular program "Third Rock from the Sun") and films, both made-for-TV and theatrical, most relevantly for us in the 1994 Disney release "Angels in the Outfield".

After graduating from Van Nuys High School in 1999, he attended Columbia University, but left before graduation to resume his acting career.

He is also active in both screenwriting and directing.
3. The protagonist's appearance in the company of police causes something of a stir, because 'home' is also his mother's workplace. What does his mother, voiced by Laurie Metcalf, do for a living?

Answer: She runs an inn.

Sarah Hawkins runs the Benbow Inn on the planet Montressor.

Born: June 16, 1955 in Carbondale, Illinois to James and Lizzy Metcalf, Laura Elizabeth Metcalf has won numerous acting awards. Though she started as a stage actress and has performed in Broadway productions of plays by Henrick Ibsen, Edward Albee and David Mamet, and starred in films, most of them also in serious roles, she became well-known by playing Jackie Harris on the sitcom "Roseanne", which ran from 1988 through 1997. She has also appeared in such popular television shows as "Third Rock from the Sun" and "Big bBang Theory". Miss Metcalf voiced Mrs. Davis, Andy's mother, in the "Toy Story" movies. She also lent her voice to Lucille Krunklehorn-Robinson in the 2007 Disney movie "Meet the Robinsons".
4. Dr. Delbert Doppler is the grownup friend who, to the dismay of the protagonist's mother, not only encourages the protagonist's dreams of space faring, but accompanies him on the journey. What profession does Dr. Doppler follow?

Answer: Astrophysicist

David Hyde Pierce voices Dr. Doppler, an unworldly but kind astrophysicist and friend of Mrs. Hawkins.

Born: April 3, 1959 in Saratoga Springs, NY to George and Laura Pierce, David Hyde Pierce is a stage, screen and television actor. He is perhaps best known for his role as Dr. Niles Crane on the popular sitcom "Frasier", which ran from 1993 through 2004. Surprisingly, this was his first major role. Before his part in "Treasure Planet", Mr. Pierce voiced the brown stick insect Slim in the 1998 Disney animated release "A Bug's Life".
5. What is the name of Patrick McGoohan's character, a spacewrecked pilot who entrusts a very special map to the protagonist?

Answer: Billy Bones

With his dying breath, Billy Bones entrusts to Jim's care a mysterious sphere, that later proves to be a three dimensional map of the galaxy showing the location of Captain Flint's Treasure Planet, and warns him to "beware of the cyborg."

Though a distinguished stage, film and television actor Patrick McGoohan is often thought of as an Irishman or Britisher, he was actually born in Astoria, Queens, New York on March 19, 1928. His parents were Thomas McGoohan and Rose Fitzpatrick McGoohan. Perhaps best known for his character Number 6 in the British television series "The Prisoner", Mr. McGoohan had a prolific career on both sides of the Atlantic, including four guest spots playing four different murderers on the popular American detective series "Columbo". He retired in 1998, only coming back once, in 2002, to voice Billy Bones in "Treasure Planet", his last film role. Patric McGoohan died January 13, 2009 in Santa Monica, California.
6. In "Treasure Island", the Hispaniola is commanded by Captain Smallett. Who commands the Legacy in "Treasure Planet"?

Answer: Captain Amelia, a cat

The feline Captain Amelia commands the RLS Legacy, a beautiful craft, part sailing ship and part spaceship, that she rules with an iron paw.

Dame Emma Thompson, born April 15, 1959 in Paddington, London, is better known for period television dramas and Shakespearean plays than for Science Fiction Adventure flicks. The part of Captain Amelia was, nonetheless, written specifically for her.
7. What is the job title of the large and block-like Mr. Arrow, voiced by Roscoe Lee Browne?

Answer: First Mate

Mr. Arrow is unswervingly loyal to Captain Amelia who, for her part, depends on him implicitly.

From Woodbury, New Jersey, Roscoe Lee Browne was born on May 2, 1922, the fourth son of Baptist minister Sylvanus S. Browne and his wife Lovie. He was a distinguished Shakespearean actor, who also had a successful career in film and television, perhaps being best remembered as the erudite butler Saunders on "soap", a role he played from 1979 through 1981. Mr. Browne died on April 11, 2007 in Los Angeles.
8. In the novel "Treasure Island", Long John Silver has a wooden leg. What disability (or adaptation) does John Silver have in the movie "Treasure Planet"?

Answer: He is a cyborg.

The RLS Legacy's cook, John Silver, is a cyborg. Specifically, he has a robotic arm. Though Silver is a pirate and eventually leads the mutiny on the Legacy, he and Jim develop a close if complicated and troubled relationship.

Born Brian Bell on September 10, 1937 in Johannesburg, South Africa, Brian Murray was primarily a stage actor. Indeed, he was a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company and starred on Broadway in plays by Checkov, Michael Frayn and Sheridon, to name but a few. He also appeared on radio and on American television, notably on "Law and Order: Criminal Intent" and "30 Rock". Brian Murray died on August 20, 2018 in New York City.
9. What type of creature is the villainous Scroop?

Answer: Similar to a spider crab

Scroop, a vicious spider crab-like crewman is one of the pirate gang. It is actually Scroop that cuts Mr. Arrow's lifeline, causing him to be lost overboard during the Legacy's encounter with the supernova.

Michael Anthony Claudio Wincott is from Scarborough, a suburb of Toronto. He was born on January 21, 1958 to an English father and an Italian mother. After graduating from the University of Toronto, he attended Julliard on a full scholarship. Since graduating from Julliard in 1986, he has worked on stage and in film often, as here, playing villains.
10. B.E.N., a robot who literally "lost his mind", is based on the character Ben Gunn in "Treasure Island". Does B.E.N. recover his memory?

Answer: Yes

Martin Short voices B.E.N. (Bio-Electronic Navigator), a robot whose primary memory was removed by Capt. Flint, who abandoned him on Treasure Planet, in an attempt to prevent him from revealing Flint's secrets. As a result the robot, though affable and eager to please, is quite mad. In the end though, with Jim's help, he recovers his memory and his sanity.

Martin Hayter Short was born on March 26, 1950 to Charles Patrick Short and Olive Grace Hayter Short in Hamilton, Ontario Canada. He was bitten by the theater bug shortly after graduating from McMaster University in his native Hamilton with a degree in Social Work. Since starting as a standup and improvisational comic with Second City (a group that had a long running show on Canadian and American television) and "Saturday Night Live", Martin has broadened his career through sit-coms and specials, film and Broadway. Besides his work on "Treasure Planet", he has provided voices in such non Disney animated movies as "We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story", "The Pebble and the Penguin", "The Prince of Egypt", "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius", "Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper, "The Spiderwick Chronicles", "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" and "Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return".
