Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the movie, two tourists were looking at the picture of the Loch Ness Monster and talking about whether or not it was fake. Who offered to tell them the real story behind the picture?

Answer: Angus

When the male tourist mentioned that the picture was a fake and that everyone knew that, an old man affirmed that it was fake, but that there was more to it. He then offered to tell them the true story. Throughout the movie, the scenes went back to the old man telling the story of what happened. It wasn't until the end of the movie that he told them his name was Angus MacMorrow.

The young Angus MacMorrow was the boy who found the water horse egg and raised it. He was constantly in trouble with his mother and did not get along well with the military captain who was staying at their house. He spent a lot of time in his father's workshop and waiting for his father to come home.
2. When Angus first found the water horse after it hatched out of the egg, what did he feed it?

Answer: Potato

Angus found the water horse egg and left it in the workshop. Later that night during the storm, Angus went out to the workshop to see what was going on and found that the egg had hatched. When he finally found the creature, he realized that he was hungry and he ran to the kitchen to get him something to eat.

He grabbed a potato and fed it to the water horse in pieces. That was when he realized that the water horse was hurt and he tended to its wound while the water horse ate.
3. What did Angus decide to name the water horse?

Answer: Crusoe

The second time that Angus went to see the water horse, he was trying to find a name for the water horse when he looked at the books on the shelf in his dad's workshop. He saw the novel Daniel Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe" and thought that Crusoe would be a fitting name for him.

This was also when he gave him the can of garbage to eat and he had a memory of his dad telling him about a creature that could be seen sometimes at sea or in the loch.
4. Where did Kirstie first discover the water horse?

Answer: Bathroom

After Mowbray moved into the workshop, Angus couldn't find Crusoe. Crusoe had gotten into the house and had been chased by the dog. Kirstie had run her bath water and was about to take a bath. While she was getting her things ready, Crusoe made it into the bathroom and into the bathtub. Angus heard her scream and knew that she had found Crusoe, so he hurried into the bathroom to keep her quiet and to tell her that Crusoe was friendly.

He had tried to tell her about Crusoe before, but she wouldn't listen.
5. When Angus found the water horse, he didn't know what it was and tried to look it up in the encyclopedia. Who recognized what the water horse was and told Angus?

Answer: Lewis Mowbray

Lewis Mowbray was the man who was hired to be a handyman and help out around the house. He liked to keep to himself and did not mingle with the soldiers on the grounds. He had been in the war and was honorably discharged after being wounded, and he didn't get along with Captain Hamilton. Mrs. MacMorrow would always call him Mr. Lewis and he would tell her that his name was Mowbray.

He told Angus the legend of the water horse when he went to fix the bathroom and found that they were hiding the water horse there. He was scared at first, and once he got a good look at Crusoe, he realized that he looked like a water horse.
6. What was the name of the dog that was always chasing the water horse?

Answer: Churchill

Churchill was an English Bulldog who spent most of his time in the kitchen with Sgt. Strunk guarding the food for the soldiers. He first saw the water horse when Crusoe got into the house after Mowbray moved into the workshop. As Crusoe was going through the kitchen, Churchill got after him and would have gotten him had it not been for the rope tying him down.

The next time Churchill chased after Crusoe was when Crusoe got out of the bathroom and was wandering through the house. Churchill chased him and caused a big mess, including spilling the contents of the dinner table all over the soldiers and Mrs. MacMorrow.

The last time Churchill got after Crusoe was on the beach of the loch. Crusoe had grown to full-size and Churchill was never heard of again.
7. When Anne MacMorrow found Angus and Kirstie in the workshop with Mowbray, she looked in the door and Mowbray came out to ask her if she wanted anything. She thanked him and he didn't know why. Why did she thank him?

Answer: For making the children laugh

Angus had been telling Kirstie and Mowbray about his experience that day in the loch with Crusoe. They were all talking and laughing when Mrs. MacMorrow looked in the window in the door. Mowbray saw her and went outside to ask if she needed anything. She told him that she wanted to thank him, and when he asked why, she told him for making the children laugh, especially Angus.

She told him that they hadn't laughed like that in a long time and that she used to make Angus laugh, too. Mowbray told her she could try again by spending more of her time with Angus.
8. Which two men decided to get a picture of the monster in the loch?

Answer: Jock McGowan and Jimmy McGarry

Jimmy was the old man who drank a lot and spent time in the tavern. He was fishing with the bartender when he first saw the water horse. He was talking with Jock McGowan, a reporter, at the tavern when they decided to get a picture of it. Jock said that it would attract tourists after the war and would put Loch Ness on the map. Jimmy wanted to do it for the money.

When they went to try and get the picture, the soldiers fired missiles into the loch and they decided that no monster would come out after that.

They then made a fake monster and put it in the water to take the picture.
9. When the soldiers went out to find the monster, why did they call for help?

Answer: They were attacked by the water horse.

After looking at the picture of the monster in the newspaper, Sgt. Strunk mentioned that it was the same monster that he had seen one day. One of the other soldiers wanted to go hunting for the monster. Once they were on the water, Churchill ran alongside the loch and barked to let them know he had found the water horse. Once Churchill stopped barking, they knew that the monster was close. Crusoe then attacked the boat and one of the soldiers put out a 'Mayday' call. Crusoe picked up Sgt. Strunk in his mouth and was going to eat him, but he threw him onto the beach when Angus disappeared under the water. Crusoe brought Angus back up to the surface and put him on the beach with Mowbray. Once the other soldiers received the 'Mayday' call, they thought that the enemy was attacking and Capt. Hamilton gave the orders for the gunners to fire at will if they saw an enemy vessel.
10. At the end of the movie, a mother was looking for her son named William. William was walking along the beach and he found an object and picked it up. What did he find?

Answer: An egg

This scene was very similar to when Angus found the water horse egg at the beginning of the movie. The boy picked up the egg which was covered in sea grime with the exception of one bright blue spot. As the boy picked it up, it made the sound as if it were ready to hatch.

The older Angus had been telling the tourists that he had never again seen Crusoe after he went out to sea when Angus was young. According to the legend that Mowbray had told Angus, there could only be one water horse in the world at a time. Before the water horse died, it would lay one egg so that the next one could be born.
