When Paul arrived home from fighting in WWII, his wife, Betty, wasn't waiting for him at the dock. Paul and Betty had married days before Paul left for the war and now, four years later, Paul realized what a mistake it had been. Paul wrote to Betty almost every day, but Betty said that after the first few letters, she couldn't stand to read about all of the fighting. Paul had written to her about his hopes and dreams, and plans for their future in those letters.

He was greatly disappointed that Betty hadn't read them. Betty told Paul that she had talked to his old boss about keeping his job for him, and negotiated him a raise.

Paul was travelling to Sacramento, and Victoria was going home to her family's vineyard in Napa. They later reconnected on a bus which Paul was forced to take since Victoria had accidentally picked up Paul's ticket when the train lurched, and they both fell.

In desperation Alberto threw a lantern toward Paul, but the lantern landed in the dry vineyard and started a fire which destroyed everything. He brought it to Alberto who determined that the fire had not gotten to the inside of the root. Alberto finally accepted Paul, and handed him the first root piece to plant. When Paul said he didn't know how, Alberto told Victoria to help her husband.
