Benjamin Mee and his two children, Rosie and Dylan, were struggling to come to terms with the death of their beloved wife and mother. Benjamin resigned from his journalist job after being unable to produce decent work for his editor. Fourteen year old Dylan was expelled from school due to his unusual drawings of gruesome decapitations. Seven year old Rosie was just a cutie pie.

Benjamin was initially looking for a house in the country to give his children a better quality of life. The house he eventually purchased came with a run down zoo attached, much to the delight of his young daughter, and disgust of his teenage son.

Scarlett Johansson is an American actress famous for her roles in "The Horse Whisperer" (1998), "Girl with a Pearl Earring" (2003) and "Lost in Translation" (2003). In "We Bought a Zoo", she played the role of the head zookeeper, Kelly Foster. At first she was cynical about Benjamin Mee due to his lack of experience in running a zoo.

She soon realised he meant business and a strong friendship developed.

His wife left Benjamin an investment account after her death, asking that he used it to "follow his dream". He used the much needed cash to make repairs to the zoo and update the animals living conditions. His brother Duncan, played by Thomas Haden Church, was initially against the move, as was his son, Dylan. An argument took place between Benjamin and Dylan which resulted in a new consignment of snakes being let loose.

Answer: Buster the bear

Due to the initial lack of funding, some of the animal enclosures were in a state of disrepair. Buster the bear escaped his enclosure and was eventually trapped and returned back safely. The zoo was visited by an inspector, much hated by some of the staff, and he gave instructions on what work needed doing before the zoo could be opened to the public.

Although Benjamin and his family only owned the zoo for a short period in time, they quickly became attached to the animals. One of these was a 17 year old Bengal tiger called Spar. The animal became very lethargic towards the end of his life and refused to eat any food put before him.

The zoo keeper and vet all recommended euthanasia and Benjamin finally looked at his conscience and made the right decision to put the animal out of its misery. Have your tissues ready when you watch this part of the film!

And why not indeed? Kelly was baffled as to why Benjamin wanted to take on a zoo, especially with his lack of experience. The first time Benjamin met his soon to be wife, he asked her, "Why would a beautiful woman like you talk to a stranger like me?" She gave him the same response as he gave to Kelly. "Why not?"

Answer: A tree

The worst storm in nearly a hundred years caused heavy rain and trees to topple. A large tree fell across the drive near to the entrance of the zoo, putting people off from entering. The sun peeked through the clouds as hordes of people climbed over the tree trunk and fallen branches, making their way to the newly opened zoo. Young Rosie was in charge of the peacock, Dylan and Lily had reconciled, and Kelly kissed Benjamin.

Benjamin first met his wife, Katherine, inside a restaurant. Although the film saw the blossoming friendship between himself and the head zoo keeper, he still wanted his children to retain the memory of their mother.

Cameron Crowe was also known for directing "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (1982), "Jerry Maguire" (1996) and "Elizabethtown" (2005). The film "We Bought a Zoo" was based on the true life story of Benjamin Mee and his family who bought a zoo in Devon, England called Dartmoor Zoological Park.

The location was changed from England to America for the film and this was agreed between the real Benjamin Mee and Cameron Crowe.
