Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who did Joan Crawford play?

Answer: Blanche Hudson

Joan Crawford read the story of the same name and initially wanted to turn the novel into a film. Her career was going downhill, so she asked Bette Davis to play her sister. Crawford played a movie star whose career was ruined by a car accident. She was tortured by her sister, Jane, who was once a child actor.
2. Who did Bette Davis play?

Answer: Baby Jane Hudson

Baby Jane was a child actor whose star faded as her sister, Blanche became a Hollywood starlet. Jane tortured her sister by feeding her a dead bird, as well as a rat and forced her not to use the phone. She finally tied Blanche up and gagged her in her bedroom.
3. What did Jane suffer from?

Answer: Alcoholism

Jane was a child star and once her stardom went downhill and her sister's went up, she became jealous. This resulted in her becoming an alcoholic. A scene showed her on the phone with a liquor store but when she found out Blanche had the store decline her orders, she pretended to be Blanche on the phone, and stated that there was a misunderstanding.
4. What instrument did Edwin Flagg play?

Answer: Piano

Edwin Flagg was a pianist, as well as composer looking for work. He found it in an ad that Jane had published in the local paper. He lived with his mother, Dehlia and came from England. He wasn't sure about working with Jane but decided to give it a go when she promised him money.
5. In the 1917 flashback, what treat did Baby Jane want after the show?

Answer: Ice cream

Jane told her father that she made the money in order for her to have whatever she wanted. She did this in front of fans backstage and the parents were appalled to see a child speak that way to a parent. Jane told her father that Blanche wanted ice cream as well.
6. Where did Jane take Blanche at the end of the film?

Answer: The beach

Jane bought an ice cream for herself and Blanche. When the man at the ice cream stand told her the cost, she just walked away. This was how the police found where she was. Ice cream seemed to occur a lot in this movie. At the beginning, as well as the end, Jane wanted ice cream for herself and Blanche.
7. While at the beach, the line "You mean all this time we could have been friends?" was said. Who said this?

Answer: Jane

This happened after Blanche told Jane the real reason why she became paralyzed. In 1935, the two went to a Hollywood party. Jane grew more and more drunk throughout the night and started making a fool out of Blanche. On their drive home, a drunken Jane went to open the gate. Blanche snapped and tried to run Jane down with the car. Jane was too drunk to remember what really happened, so Blanche told her it was her fault for Blanche's disability. Jane had spent most of her life torturing Blanche because she thought she was the one who had paralyzed Blanche, when it was really Blanche's fault.
8. What was the name of the doctor who Blanche wanted Jane to visit?

Answer: Dr. Shelby

Blanche was planning on asking Dr. Shelby to take a look at Jane. She was growing more and more careless with her drinking. Blanche thought Jane might have a problem. The doctor finally agreed to visit the Hudsons' house when Blanche broke free and made her way down the stairs. Jane caught Blanche on the phone with the doctor, and she beat her almost to death.
9. What did Baby Jane use to kill Elvira, Blanche's cleaning lady?

Answer: A hammer

Elvira snuck into the house after Baby Jane left to check on Blanche. She realized that Baby Jane gagged and tied Blanche up in her room. Jane came home and realized Elvira was in the house. She came up behind Elvira and smashed her head in with a hammer that was sitting on the table.

She then took Elvira's body into the car in the middle of the night, afraid that the police would come for her. Elvira was always looking out for Blanche, in case Jane did something wrong.
10. What song was requested in the 1917 flashback?

Answer: I've Written a Letter to Daddy

This song appeared several times throughout the entire film. Baby Jane sung it at least three times, but you could hear it instrumentally throughout. They didn't play anything other than that song. It was just a variation of the song played different ways. You first saw Jane singing it in the 1917 flashback when she was performing on stage with her father.

The second time was when she got drunk and realized she wasn't a baby anymore. The third time was when she was performing in front of Edwin. The song was about a girl who wrote a letter to her dead father.
