In this movie another Australian, Simon Baker, made his film debut. He went on later to star in the TV show "The Mentalist". The body count in this movie is 30.

When Steven Spielberg was looking for an unknown actor for the role of Private Ryan, he selected Matt Damon for his "All-American look", little realising that Damon would go on to win an Oscar for "Good Will Hunting" (1997). Both Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford were considered for the role of Captain John Miller, before Tom Hanks was cast in that role. This was the highest grossing film in 1998.

In the original novel Hawkeye's name was "Natty Bumppo". This was the second version of James Fennemore Cooper's book, the earlier film being made in 1936 and starring Randolph Scott as Hawkeye.
