Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is a top cop in London, but his superiors think he's making everyone else look bad, so they send him off to work in the picturesque village of rural Sandford. What are the only things we see him take with him to the village hotel?

Answer: A suitcase and a Japanese Peace Lily

Nicholas is told, on numerous occasions throughout the film, that he can't "switch off" from his police work. He splits up with his girlfriend because of his dedication to the force (sorry, police service), and his new partner, Danny Butterman (Nick Frost), notices too. He uses the Japanese Peace Lily to bring some calm to his life.
He wins the toy monkey later on at the village fete, with his sharp shooting abilities.
2. At the hotel, the owner is doing a crossword. What word does Nicholas help her out with?

Answer: Hag

I'm not sure how he manages to read the crossword clues from upside-down and so far away but hey, he is a very good policeman. This is in response to the lady shouting out "Fascist!" to him when she suddenly thinks of the answer to another of the clues. She shouts it out again near the end of the film, but this time, she means it!
3. In the local pub, Nicholas notices that there are lots of under-age drinkers present and proceeds to throw them all out. Before he does, what's he drinking?

Answer: Cranberry juice

A policeman has to stay focused so Nicholas doesn't drink much alcohol (at least not at the start of the film). He also says later on that he doesn't drink caffeine past noon.
The owners of the pub say that most of the kids are nearly eighteen (legal drinking age in England) and that it's better they're in the pub than out on the streets causing havoc. They mention that it's for "the greater good" - a phrase which is quite important to this particular village, as we find out!
4. Nicholas Angel and his partner Danny are doing speed checks on the local road when an actor and his girlfriend zoom past. After their encounter, the actor leaves Nicholas and Danny tickets for his latest performance. They decide not to go as it could be seen as a bribe. Danny's father, the chief police officer, asks them to go to represent him instead. The play is "Romeo and Juliet" and ends in a jolly song and dance. What song do the actors sing?

Answer: "Lovefool" by The Cardigans

The actors are dressed in the same costumes as Romeo and Juliet from the Baz Luhrmann film i.e. a suit of armour and a winged angel. All the answer options are featured on the film's soundtrack. "Lovefool" was a very strange choice, as everyone knows the play ends tragically, but this performance ends with the actors having a dance to this bouncy number. The villagers think the performance is awful and several of them complain that there are better trained actors who had to be understudies. Later on that night, Mr. Blower (Romeo) and Miss Draper (Juliet) are savagely beheaded by a cloaked figure and their deaths are staged as a car accident the next morning.

They are the first victims in a series of suspicious "accidents" in Sandford.
5. Timothy Dalton plays the nefarious Simon Skinner, a local business man. What kind of business does he run?

Answer: A supermarket

He runs the local supermarket which, instead of a fake movie shop, turns out to be a "Somerfield" which is a well-known chain in the UK. It also provides the location for one of the fight scenes later in the film. I don't know if they got an increase in trade after this or not! Nicholas is suspicious of Simon right from the start, but can he prove he has anything to do with the murders? Simon has hired several tough characters to work in his supermarket, including the gigantic inbred trolley boy and two shady looking butchers.

He always seems to have inside knowledge of the murders but, as we find out, he's not working alone.
6. The journalist for the Sandford paper is notorious for his bad spelling ("Bipass" instead of "Bypass" and "Angle" instead of Nicholas's surname of "Angel") and this eventually leads to his death. What is the appropriate surname of this writer of local events?

Answer: Messenger

The name of Messenger is prophetic as the journalist is trying to tell Nicholas about who might be behind the murders, when he himself is killed.
I noticed that lots of the surnames for the village residents seem end in "-er" and some relate to their jobs - the journalist Messenger (Adam Buxton from "The Adam and Joe Show"), the florist Tiller (i.e. someone who tills the earth) and the doctor Hatcher (bringing life into the world). This may be slightly tenuous but it struck me at the time!
Other surnames were Skinner, Shooter (the Reverend - he did have a gun at the end, but who didn't?), Porter (the pub owners) and Cooper. Julia Deakin, who plays the pub landlady, was also Marsha in "Spaced" along with Pegg and Frost and had a brief part in "Shaun of the Dead".
7. There are a lot of well-known British actors in "Hot Fuzz" and the duo of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost were the main characters in "Shaun of the Dead" too. What piece of dialogue appears in both films?

Answer: "Do you want anything from the shop?"; "Cornetto!"

This line appears near the beginning of "Shaun of the Dead" with Pegg's character asking Frost, who's playing a computer game. In "Hot Fuzz", Frost's character asks Pegg, when they're sitting in their police car outside the village shop. When they go in for the ice creams, the shop lady asks if they've "had any luck catching them killers, then?" This tips Nicholas Angel off to the fact that there is more than one killer.
The "Thanks, babe" quotation was used both in "Shaun of the Dead" and the TV show "Spaced". It was apparently re-used unwittingly, as in both cases, Pegg and Frosts's characters are very close friends.
The tea quotation is from "Spaced" and the "I love my mum!" one is from "Shaun of the Dead". They are all brilliant so if you haven't seen them and you enjoyed "Hot Fuzz", they are must-sees!
8. Nicholas Angel finds out that the NWA (not THAT NWA, the Neighbourhood Watch Alliance, of course!) is behind all the recent disappearances and murders in order to protect the image of Sandford. Danny has to pretend to kill him to save his life and get him away. Angel starts to drive back to London but what does he see in a petrol station which give him an idea about how to take on the NWA?

Answer: Action cop DVDs

Remembering Danny's love of action cop movies and his repeated questions about police work in London, Nicholas decides to play up to the part. He returns to the village in style, buying some cool sunglasses on the way. He goes back to the police station and gets all the guns he can carry from the evidence room.

At the start, the evidence room is completely empty, then when Nicholas goes to investigate claims of a farmer cutting other people's hedges, it turns out he has a barnful of unregistered weapons, including an old sea mine! Angel straps on as many guns as possible and goes out to face the village.
9. Finally winning the support of the rest of Sandford's police team, Nicholas and the team go to find the big boss Skinner. A shoot-out ensues inside the supermarket and one of the Andys gets what over his face?

Answer: Bolognese sauce

"It's OK Andy, it's just bolognese!" he yells at the other Andy who thinks his partner's been shot in the face. I don't know why that line's so funny, it just is!
Angel manages to dispatch the massive trolley boy into the freezers and Danny asks if he said something like "Cool off". He replies that he didn't, but tells Danny that earlier in his hotel room, he took his cuddly monkey away from the trolley boy who was attacking him and said "Playtime's over" before hitting him on the head with his Japanese Peace Lily. Danny is suitably impressed with this.
10. Danny's father turns out to be one of the NWA members who can't let go. The village means too much to him and after the quite disgusting showdown with Skinner at the model village, he runs off. Danny tries to shoot him, but in a parody of his favourite film, "Point Break", he can't do it and shoots into the air instead. Frank Butterman (Jim Broadbent) jumps in a police car to make his escape. What's inside the vehicle that makes him lose control?

Answer: A swan

The swan keeps popping up throughout the film (the hotel Nicholas stays at is also called the Swan) as a Mr. P.I. Staker (Stephen Merchant) reports it as being on the loose. Nicholas and Danny finally capture it during their chase after Frank Butterman and it proves quite a good crime-fighter in its own right after it attacks him when he gets in the wrong car to escape.
