Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First off, an easy one. According to Three Dog Night, what was Jeremiah?

Answer: A bullfrog

"Jeremiah was a bullfrog" is the opening line of "Joy to the World."
Bullfrogs (Rana castesbiana) live throughout much of North America.
2. What group named themselves after a line from a skit by a comedy group whose name contains a reptile?

Answer: Toad the Wet Sprocket

The comedy sketch was by Monty Python. Pythons are constricting snakes beloging to several Old World genuses. Toads techincally are amphibians of the family Bufonidae, but many reptiles, (horned lizards for example) have also been referred to as toads.
3. What group is lead by David Coverdale?

Answer: Whitesnake

Although there are over 2,000 species of snakes, I do not believe that any is referred to as a Whitesnake.
4. What group sang "Happy Together?"

Answer: The Turtles

There are over 250 species of turtles worldwide. Turtles have feet that are adapted for water, wherease tortoises have feet that are adapted for land travel.
5. What reptiles are mentioned in "Ventura Highway" by America?

Answer: Alligator lizards

"Seasons crying no despair, Alligator lizards in the air" are the rather cryptic lyrics from this song. Alligator lizards are not alligators. They are small (four to six inch long) lizards with short limbs, slender body, and a distinctive fold along the sides of their bodies. Alligator lizards belong to the genus Gerrhontonus, and you can probably find alligator lizards alongside Ventura Highway. One species, the southern alligator lizard (Gerrhontonus multicarinatus) is native to the area.
6. What car (with a reptilian name) did the Rip Chords sing about?

Answer: Cobra

"Hey Little Cobra" was a song by the Rip Chords. There are about 20 species of cobras (Family Elapidae) in the world.
7. In what song did Elton John hop and bop along with Suzy?

Answer: Crocodile Rock

"We were hopping, bopping to the Crocodile Rock" was a line from the song. There are fifteen species of crocodiles worldwide.
8. What did Jim Morrison of the Doors sometimes call himself?

Answer: Lizard King

Jim Morrison was the Lizard King. Lizards belong to the order Squamata (which includes snakes and lizards). Lizards can be distinguished from snakes because lizards have eyelids, external ears, and are anatomically different internally. There are some legless lizards, and some snakes (boas, for example) have vestigal legs.
9. What song by the Doobie Brothers refers to a snake?

Answer: Cotton Mouth

The water moccasin (Agkistrodon piscavorus), a venomous snake from the Southeastern United States is referred to as a cottonmouth because the inside of the mouth is white.
10. According to Jim Stafford, what does Mary Lou not like?

Answer: Spiders and Snakes

"Spiders and Snakes" was a hit for Jim Stafford in 1974 containing the line "I don't like spiders and snakes." I guess it's obvious from this quiz that I don't share the same sentiment. Maybe my next quiz should be about spiders?
