Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chas Hodges started off in a group that backed singer Mike Berry. What was their name?

Answer: The Outlaws

The Outlaws were formed in 1961 and were signed by record producer Joe Meek to be the backing group for his new singer, Mike Berry. He also used them to back other artists in his stable and to record demo records. They were also much in demand as backing group for touring American artists and acted in this capacity for, among others, Jerry Lee Lewis and Gene Vincent.

As well as Chas Hodges, who was bass guitarist, the line up also, at one stage, included Richie Blackmore who went on to find fame with Deep Purple.
2. Dave Peacock was in the group that backed Cliff Bennet. What were they called?

Answer: The Rebel Rousers

Cliff Bennet and The Rebel Rousers were a soul/rhythm and blues group. They started their career signed to Joe Meek, but their hit singles "Got To Get You Into My Life" and "One Way Love" came when they had changed management to Brian Epstein. The band also included Mick Burt on drums, who went on to be the drummer for Chas & Dave.
3. What is the name usually given to Chas & Dave's musical style?

Answer: Rockney

"Rockney" is a mixture of pub sing-a-long, music hall, boogie woogie piano with 1950s rock and roll mixed in for good measure. It is unique to Chas & Dave. Their record label was also called "Rockney".
4. Their first top 40 hit single was also used for a television commercial for beer. What was the single called?

Answer: Gertcha

"Gertcha" peaked at number twenty on the British singles chart in 1979. Used for a television commercial for Courage beer it was their breakthrough single as the television exposure brought them national attention. "Gertcha" is an old word that was used as an exclamation instead of a swear word. It would fit any circumstance from displeasure to approval depending on the tone of voice.
5. Chas & Dave have recorded two records with members of which London football team?

Answer: Tottenham Hotspur

Chas & Dave are both lifelong supporters of Tottenham Hotspur. In 1980 they recorded "Glory Glory Tottenham Hotspur" with members of the FA Cup Final team, and in 1981 recorded "Tottenham Tottenham", again with members of the Cup Final team. They must have been lucky for the team as they won both finals.
6. Chas & Dave opened for which group at the 1979 Knebworth Festival?

Answer: Led Zeppelin

On the face of it Chas & Dave and Led Zeppelin seem an unlikely combination. However, their infectious brand of music seems to cut across all other genres. Certainly Led Zeppelin thought they were the ideal choice to open the show and get everyone in a party mood.
7. In 1983 Chas & Dave had their own TV series, which was set in an East End pub. What was it called?

Answer: Chas & Dave's Knees Up

The show only ran for six episodes, but attracted big name guest stars such as Eric Clapton, Lonnie Donegan and Lulu. One problem with the show was that the alcohol served in the mocked up pub was real. The pub drinkers were normal members of the public acting as a audience, who did not realise that there were no toilets.

The toilet doors shown in the pub actually just let to behind the set. This caused some complications when two or three pints of beer had been drunk.
8. One of Chas & Dave's best known singles is "Rabbit". What, in this context, is the meaning of rabbit?

Answer: Talking

Rabbit is talking. This comes from rhyming slang rabbit and pork - to talk. Comments such as "you don't half rabbit on" or "stop rabbiting" are all telling you that you are talking too much.

"Rabbit" was released in 1980 and made number eight on the UK singles chart. It remains very popular in Chas & Dave's live shows.
9. In 2009 Dave Peacock announced he would be retiring from the duo. What prompted this decision?

Answer: The death of his wife

In 2009 Dave's wife, Sue, died after a battle with lung cancer. She, and Chas Hodges wife, Joan, had been driving forces behind the success of the duo, taking care of the business side of things and often accompanying them on tours. Following her death Dave Peacock decided to retire.

However, in 2011 he and Chas reunited for what was supposed to be a farewell tour. So successful was this that they have decided to carry on in a limited way.
10. Many people think Chas & Dave did the theme tune for "Only Fools & Horses", when in fact it was John Sullivan, who also wrote it. He did want Chas & Dave to perform it, so why didn't they?

Answer: They were in Australia when it had to be recorded

For the first series of "Only Fools and Horses" just an instrumental theme was used. John Sullivan persuaded the BBC to go with the lyric version from season two onwards and wanted Chas & Dave to record it. This coincided with their record "Ain't No Pleasing You" being very successful in Australia, and they were committed to touring there, so were unable to record "Only Fools and Horses".
