Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Not exactly a real drummer, but a wild performer nonetheless. Who is the crazed drummer of the fictional band Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem as well as of the Muppet Show Orchestra?

Answer: Animal

Animal was rumoured to be inspired by Keith Moon, mainly due to the bushy eyebrows and his wild behavior, on and off stage.

Animal: [roars]
Muppet: Oh, yeah, that's Animal. Show 'em what you do, Animal.
Animal: Eat drums! [chews on a cymbal]
Muppet: No, no, no, beat drums, beat drums!
Animal: Beat drums! Beat drums! [beats the drums with his head]
Muppet: Down, Animal!
Animal: Down!
Muppet: Sit!
Animal: Sit! [He sits quietly for a moment, panting, then snickers to the camera]

From: "The Muppet Movie" (1979)
2. The drummer of The Who is considered by many as one of the most original drummers and by many more as one the most controversial. What was his name?

Answer: Keith Moon

The Who gained a reputation for destroying their instruments and speakers at the end of every gig. Moon did not hold back and once even blew up his drum kit by setting off fire works after playing "My Generation". He also drove his car into a swimming pool. His nickname Moon The Loon was easily coined, I suspect.

In 1978, aged 32, Keith Moon died - ironically - of an overdose of a sedative used in treating alcohol addiction.

Roger Daltrey (vocals), Pete Townshend (guitar) and John Entwistle (bass) were the other original members of The Who.
3. The drummer of Metallica, who is originally from Denmark, dreamt of becoming a musician after going to a Deep Purple concert in Copenhagen at the age of 10. Who am I talking about?

Answer: Lars Ulrich

Film director Quentin Tarantino asked Ulrich to provide a soundtrack for the movie "Kill Bill". After reading the script and, ipse dixit, not quite able to "wrap my thick Danish head around it", Ulrich decided to pull out of the project. After seeing the final result in the cinema, he called his decision "probably the single biggest mistake of my creative life".
4. Tommy Lee is arguably best known for being the former husband of Heather Locklear and Pamela Anderson (not to mention his videotaped exploits with the latter), but he is also the founder and drummer of which heavy metal band?

Answer: Mötley Crüe

Greek-American Thomas Lee Bass is also the founder of the rap-metal band Methods of Mayhem. He has two sons with Pamela Anderson.
5. Canadian Neil Peart takes the number one spot of most of the "Best Rock Drummers Ever" polls. In which famous Canadian progressive rock band does he showcase his exceptional skills?

Answer: Rush

Peart is also a prolific writer, having numerous books about music and travel to his name. He also acts as the primary lyricist of Rush. Initially Peart drew inspiration from science fiction, mythology as well as the works by Ayn Rand, but gradually his lyrics became more politically and socially engaged.

In the progressive rock scene, Peart is considered the most influential and creative drummers.
6. John Bonham, the best drummer of all time according to the readers of Rolling Stone magazine in 2011, was a member of the greatest seventies rock band Led Zeppelin. Unfortunately, he met an untimely death in 1980. What were the circumstances of his demise?

Answer: Asphyxiation from vomit

After a day of rehearsals and heavy drinking, the band spent the night at Jimmy Page's house in Windsor, UK. The next day Led Zeppelin's tour manager and John Paul Jones found Bonham dead. An inquest resulted in a verdict of "accidental death" as no other drugs were found in Bonham's body. He was cremated on 10 October 1980.

The planned US tour was cancelled and the remaining members decided to disband.
7. Dave Grohl is my personal favorite. Before proving his versatility by picking up a guitar and fronting his own rock band The Foo Fighters, Grohl became famous as the drummer of which ground breaking grunge band from Seattle?

Answer: Nirvana

After Nirvana broke up as a result of Kurt Cobain's suicide, Dave Grohl recorded a first album with songs that he wrote during the Nirvana days and played all guitar, bass and drum sections himself. Later he recruited the band members. Taylor Hawkins, the present drummer of The Foo Fighters, once admitted to be quite intimidated by the fact "that the singer of your band is the world's best rock drummer".
8. Harold Blaine (born Harold Belsky, 1929 - 2019) was a legendary session drummer who can be heard on a seemingly endless list of hit songs. In 1961, he provided the drum parts on his first number one hit. Which one?

Answer: "Can't Help Falling in Love" - Elvis Presley

Besides the artists that were already mentioned, Blaine worked with famous artists like The Beach Boys, The Mamas & the Papas, The Byrds, Sonny & Cher, Frank Sinatra, John Lennon, Neil Diamond, The Carpenters, The Supremes, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Dean Martin....and the list goes on and on.

Blaine marks each venue where he plays with a rubber stamp, saying "Hal Blaine Strikes Again".
9. One of the most recognizable drum solos comes from the very first single of Phil Collins' solo career. What is the title of this haunting and angry song about the divorce he was going through?

Answer: In the Air Tonight

From his 1981 album Face Value. UK disk jockey Stuart Maconie said about the track: "Musically, it's an extraordinarily striking record, because almost nothing happens in it ... It's the drum sound in particular that's amazing. You don't hear it at all for the first two minutes of the song ... then there's that great doo-dom doo-dom doo-dom comes in."
10. The qualities of this drummer are often underrated, but his inventive groove was essential to the music of his Liverpudlian band. He even wrote a few songs and sang about a submarine!

Answer: Ringo Starr

The Beatles of course. Lennon and McCartney often used some of Starr's unusual phrases, which they called Ringoisms, in their lyrics. For example: "a hard day's night" and "tomorrow never knows".

Paul Glaser and David Soul played David Starsky and Kenneth Hutchinson in the popular tv series "Starsky and Hutch".
