Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I was thirteen at the time. My friend Kory and I got tickets to the 1983 show at our local college. While he was a solo act at the time, he did play a few of the hits from his original group, the highlight of which was "Renegade". But mostly he played from his solo album, "Girls With Guns". Who was my first rock concert?

Answer: Tommy Shaw

Tommy Shaw got his start with the group Styx. He sang lead on a number of hits with the group, such as "Too Much Time On My Hands" and "Renegade". He had minor hits from the solo album: the title track, and "Lonely School". The show was in a small college's gym, and the sound equipment was designed for a much larger venue.

It was ridiculously loud. The ticket in 1983 was $8.00. (spaudrey)
2. This group was hot, so hot, they were sticky sweet when they played in the round at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City in October 1988. Who was my first Hair Band?

Answer: Def Leppard

"Pour Some Sugar on Me" peaked at number two on the Billboard Charts July 23, 1988. Their big album, "Hysteria", hit in 1987 and produced a crazy amount of hits on the Top 40 chart. (Hobbes1138)
3. My first concert was at Ames, Iowa's Hilton Coliseum in December of 1990. It was the first show in Iowa to try computer ticket distribution, but I still tried to get my tickets at the box office. Tickets were for me and my then-girlfriend, and we saw hits such as "Leningrad" and "We Didn't Start the Fire" from the "Storm Front" album. Who was my first concert?

Answer: Billy Joel

Of course, "Piano Man" and "Only the Good Die Young" were on the set list, too. Adding to the ticket distribution story, tickets went on sale at 10:00am on a Saturday morning, and I was in line for two hours before that. I managed to take one step forward at 10:01am, and the computer system crashed, sending ticket sales to a complete standstill.

After a 45-minute wait it was up again, but for as cold as it was, I contemplated leaving and coming back. The concert must have been a wise choice, my then-girlfriend is still my wife. (catjuggler)
4. His backup band may have been the Mothers of Invention, but he was the mother of something else. I saw this concert in Montreal, Quebec, in 1975. I think I did anyway. I don't remember a lot of this concert, for reasons I won't go into. I do know the concert wasn't at "Joe's Garage". Who was he?

Answer: Frank Zappa

I really have nothing to tell you on this one, if someone sitting next to me wrote this question, it would certainly involve the completely out of it college student sitting next to them. C'mon, it's Frank Zappa; I am guessing I wasn't the only one who has foggy memories of the show. (zizzyzuzz)
5. "Sad, But True", I was a freshman in high school when I saw this band play at Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY. Their encore included a song called "Enter Sandman". Corrosion of Conformity was the opening act. It was an awesome show to say the least and Nothing Else Matters. Who did I rock out with in 1997?

Answer: Metallica

The Poor Touring Me Tour was a 1996-1997 concert tour by American heavy metal band Metallica supporting their sixth album "Load". It had two legs, one in Europe and the other in North America. The name comes from the ninth song of the album, "Poor Twisted Me." (BunnieLeigh)
6. My first concert was when I was thirteen, in 2016. My dad took me, but I think it still qualifies. I saw songs by Robin Thicke, Miley Cyrus, Lorde, Michael Jackson, Pharrell Williams, but they weren't the ones singing them. And I don't think they were the original lyrics either. Who could it have been?

Answer: Weird Al Yankovic

Weird Al Yankovic, still going strong after over thirty years of recording and touring, put on a remarkable show, complete with snippets of all the pop culture references to him, everything from "The Simpsons" to "30 Rock". A very funny and very musical show. (LilyKae)
7. My mother took me to see this boy band at the Minneapolis Metrodome in 2001. They were so popular they had "Celebrity" status. They played a few songs before saying "Bye, Bye, Bye". Who were they?

Answer: N*SYNC

N*SYNC (or as my grandfather called them, In the Sink) was named by Justin Timberlake's mother taking the last letter of each member's first name. Justin, Chris, Joey, Lance (Lansten) and JC. (skatersarehott)
8. The first concert I saw was at the Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena in Green Bay, Wisconsin when I was 11. I won two tickets at a Scouting event and talked my dad into taking me. But this concert was enough for me to take a D-I-V-O-R-C-E from country music. Who did I see?

Answer: Tammy Wynette

I did see the other three at the arena and they were great, especially Chicago. Their entire encore was Beatle tunes. But Tammy Wynette is not at all my cup of tea. If you stand by THIS man, you won't be hearing any country music anymore. (vvicjeff)
9. There actually is a "Wild World" outside of the Midwest, and that is where I saw my first concert, in Belgium specifically. I'll just tell you who I saw...Yusuf Islam. But can you tell me what the name was on the marquee back then in 1976?

Answer: Cat Stevens

At the Forest National in Brussels on his Majikat tour, I saw Cat, with no opening act. The ticket cost approximately $8.00 and the seats were first come first serve. I lived in Belgium for three years in high school, 75-78, prior to moving to the United States. (debo29)
10. My first concert was on the LSU campus in 1981. This singer/songwriter's hit song at the time was "Same Old Lang Syne." Who was it?

Answer: Dan Fogelberg

While never achieving superstar status, Dan Fogelberg enjoyed success for almost forty years of making music. Some of his better-known hits were "Part of the Plan", "Longer", and "Leader of the Band".

Sadly, Mr Fogelberg died in 2007 at age 56 from prostate cancer. (tadpoles_uk)
