Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which fellow Liverpudlians replaced The Beatles' first UK number one hit "From Me To You", with a song that included these lyrics? "Do that again You're driving me insane Kiss me once more"

Answer: Gerry and the Pacemakers

"I Like It" by Gerry and The Pacemakers replaced "From Me To You" at number one on the UK singles chart on the 20th June 1963. It was number one for four weeks. It reached number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964.

"I Like It" was written by UK songwriter Mitch Murray who also wrote their first number one hit "How Do You Do It". Gerry and the Pacemakers turned the tables on The Beatles with "I Like It" after The Beatles had replaced their "How Do You Do It" at number one with "From Me To You".

Gerry & the Pacemakers hold a unique place in pop music history. "How Do You Do It" was the first number one by a Liverpool group on the UK singles chart. They were the first act from the Brian Epstein stable to have a number one hit on the UK singles chart. They were the first act to be replaced at the top of the UK singles chart by The Beatles. They were the first act to replace The Beatles at the top of the UK singles chart. They were the first act to reach the top of the UK singles chart with their first two and their first three single releases.

"From Me To You" was number one for seven weeks on the UK singles chart in 1963 and was the first of 11 consecutive UK number one hits by The Beatles. It reached number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 as the B-Side of "Please Please Me" on the Vee-Jay record label in 1964. It was the first Lennon/McCartney song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 when it was a number 77 hit for Del Shannon in 1963.
2. After having a UK Top Ten hit with "Twist And Shout" this group replaced "She Loves You" at number one with "Do You Love Me". Who were they?

Answer: Brian Poole and the Tremeloes

"Do You Love Me" by Brian Poole and The Tremeloes replaced "She Loves You" at number one on the UK singles chart on the 10th October 1963. It was number one for three weeks. It did not chart in the US.

"Do You Love Me" was written by Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. for The Temptations but it was recorded by The Contours. Brian Poole and The Tremeloes were auditioned by Decca records UK in 1962 and were chosen over another beat combo attending the audition called The Beatles. Brian Poole and the Tremeloes from London were contemporaries and early rivals of other southern groups like The Rolling Stones and The Dave Clark Five. They hit the UK singles chart before both of those groups and while their version of "Do You Love Me" was a number one hit, The Dave Clark Five version only reached number 30.

Winning the Decca audition over The Beatles was not the only unbelievable thing that happened to Brian Poole and The Tremeloes. Brian Poole decided to pursue a solo career in 1966 and promptly disappeared from the music scene. The Tremeloes carried on and were more successful than they had been as Brian Poole's backing group. They had seven UK Top Ten hits including the number one hit "Silence Is Golden" (a cover of the Four Seasons' 1964 B-Side).

Around 1970 the group decided they were going to change direction and move into progressive rock. Unfortunately while giving an interview to the UK music paper "Melody Maker", they stated that the fans who had bought their records up to this point had been "silly suckers". Their next record release "Hello Buddy" in 1971 only reached number 32 and they never bothered the UK chart again. It looks like the "silly suckers" spent their money on someone else's records after those comments.

"She Loves You" was number one for four weeks, dropped off the top for seven weeks and then returned to the top for a further two weeks on the UK singles chart in 1963. It was number one for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964.
