Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ray Stevens departed from his modus operandi by performing this tune with the help of some elementary school children and the result was a 1970 number one tune. Name it.

Answer: Everything Is Beautiful

Stevens' reputation as strictly a novelty song artist was shattered by "Everything Is Beautiful". Mostly known prior to this for songs such as "Ahab the Arab", "Harry the Hairy Ape" and "Gitarzan", Stevens hit with a song called "Mr. Businessman" in 1968, but that song didn't have nearly as much success as this one, which became Stevens' first number one hit when it reached the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1970as well as reaching number six in the U.K.

The songs lyrics begin with "Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world..." which was sung by a group of elementary school students from Nashville, Tennessee. Stevens won a Grammy Award for this song as well.
2. After writing literally dozens of songs for other artists, what lady finally scored as a solo artist with a 1971 double sided hit?

Answer: Carole King

Carole King was one of the most prolific songwriters of the rock and roll era, partnering with Gerry Goffin to write numerous songs for other artists. Songs like "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", "Chains", "The Loco-Motion", "One Fine Day", and "Up on The Roof" were all King standards that were recorded by others. Finally in 1971 she recorded an album of song called "Tapestry", from which the hit the double a-side single "It's Too Late/ I Feel the Earth Move" both became number one hits.

The songs remained at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts for five weeks in the summer of 1971.

More impressively, the album was number one for 16 weeks, and stayed on the Billboard charts for SIX YEARS! "It's Too Late" won a 1972 Grammy Award and is also on "Rolling Stone" Magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 469.
3. This group, who began performing in 1948, had their first number one song in 1972 with "I'll Take You There". What rock/soul/gospel band was this?

Answer: The Staple Singers

"I'll Take You There" spent one week at the top of the charts in June 1972 for the Staple Singers, a family group which had been performing since the late 1940s. They entered the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in 1967, but it was this 1972 hit that put them on the mainstream map.

They had other hits such as "Respect Yourself" and "Lets Do It Again" during the 1970s as well and were major players on the R & B charts during the decade. The song "I'll Take You There" is on "Rolling Stone" Magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 276.
4. Written by Paul McCartney for his wife, which song of his topped the charts in 1973?

Answer: My Love

All these were McCartney songs with Wings, but it was "My Love", reportedly written by Paul McCartney about his feelings for his wife Linda, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts for four weeks in June of 1973. It reached number nine in the U.K. and was the most successful songs from the group's album called "Red Rose Speedway".
5. The words "Ooga Shaka..." were not part of the lyrics when it was first recorded, but became part of this version of this B.J. Thomas classic. Can you name the group who covered "Hooked on A Feeling" in 1974?

Answer: Blue Swede

Blue Swede took the B.J. Thomas' 1969 Top 10 hit "Hooked On A Feeling" and went to the top of the Billboard hot 100 charts for one week in the spring of 1974. The song had been slightly modified when Jonathan King recorded it with the "ooga shaka" chant in the background for his 1971 cover, but it was the Blue Swede cover with the chant in, which was the most successful.
6. Olivia Newton-John scored her second consecutive number one tune in the U.S. with the 1975 hit "Let Me Be There".

Answer: False

Her second straight number one hit in the U.S. was actually "Have You Never Been Mellow" off the album of the same name, which spent a week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in March of 1975. It followed "I Honestly Love You", which had been a number one tune in the fall of 1974.

The aforementioned "Let Me Be There" was Olivia's first Top 10 U.S. hit, peaking at number six during 1973.
7. Eleven years is a long time between number one hits, but The Four Seasons suffered through this, from 1964 until 1975, when this song returned the group to the top of the charts. Name it.

Answer: December, 1963 ( Oh What a Night)

The Four Seasons hit paydirt for the third time with "Rag Doll" in 1964. Although they continued to have hits throughout the 1960s, they never reached number one again during that decade. In fact they had hit a dead spot so to speak and pretty much had faded from view as major recording artists, until the mid 1970s. Sporting new members along with Frankie Valli, The Four Seasons returned to the charts during the disco era, and first scored with "Who Loves You" which went to number three, and the "December 1963" which spent three weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard charts in March 1975.

It also went to number one in the U.K. and Canada. The song was re-mixed and re-released in 1994 and although it didn't top the charts that time, it spent 27 weeks on the charts for the second time, making it unofficially the song with the longest tenure on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at a total 54 weeks.
8. "You're a _____ _____ and you've gone too far, 'cause you know it don't matter any way..." started this 1977 hit by a popular duo. What goes into the blank?

Answer: Rich Girl

"Rich Girl" was the title of this number one song from Daryl Hall and John Oates which spent two weeks at the top of the charts in the spring of 1977. The song came off their album called "Bigger Than Both Of Us" and became the first of what would ultimately be six Billboard chart-toppers for the duo.
9. Four brothers co-wrote this 1978 hit tune which was NOT part of the "Saturday Night Fever" craze going on at the time. What song was this that broke the mold?

Answer: Shadow Dancing

It was "Shadow Dancing", written by the four Gibb Brothers (Robin, Maurice, Barry and Andy) which went to the top of the U.S. Billboard charts in the summer of 1978 and remained there for seven week. The song was credited to Andy Gibb, who did lead vocals.

It was his third and final U.S. number one hit, but it sure did well, being named the number one song for the year of 1978 in the U.S. by "Billboard Magazine".
10. Which duo, who retired in 1970, reunited and scored a number one hit in 1979? (Clue here).

Answer: Peaches and Herb

The original Peaches and Herb had some hits in the late 1960s, the most well known of which were "Let's Fall In Love", and "Close Your Eyes". In 1970 Herb Fame retired the act and became a member of the Washington D.C. police department. Herb decided to give music another shot in the late 1970s and, with a new Peaches in the fold, scored a number one hit with the romantic "Reunited" in 1979.

The song spent four weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring that year and topped the soul charts for four weeks as well, with sales of over 2 million records.
