Oldies 1150, Big 500 Countdown Quiz

Every year my local oldies radio station compiles a countdown of the top 500 oldies, based on listeners' votes. Here is a sampling of some of the songs from the '60s that made the 2004 list (not counted down in order).

Answer: Midnight Confession

Between 1967 and 1972, the Grass Roots had a presence on the Pop charts for 307 consecutive weeks. This was a very impressive feat for a group that didn't really exist. P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri invented the group as a vehicle for the songs that they wrote and produced. Various groups recorded under the name, including The Bedouins and 13th Floor.
"Suspicious Minds", by Elvis Presley, made #25 on the list, "Pretty Little Angel Eyes", by Curtis Lee, made it to #234, and "You've Made Me So Very Happy", by Blood, Sweat and Tears, came in at #437.

Answer: Unchained Melody

When Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield put their first band together in 1962, their only goal was to produce a sound good enough for them to be booked into Las Vegas lounges. Little did they suspect just how far their brand of "blue-eyed soul" would take them.
"Unchained Melody" had another surge of popularity when it was used in the movie "Ghost", starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore.
"You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", also by the Righteous Brother was voted in at #28, "What a Wonderful World", by Louis Armstrong, was #60, and "Cherish", by the Association, was #124.
5. What was #30 on the countdown? "___________________, Know the way I feel tonight. ___________________, Know this feeling ain't right. There goes my baby, There goes my heart, They're gone forever, So far apart."

Answer: Only the Lonely

"Only the Lonely" was Roy Orbison's first big hit. It made #1 in the UK, but peaked and #2 in the US. Sadly, Orbison died in Dec '88, at the young age of 52.
Also by Orbison, "Pretty Woman" was voted #2 on the countdown, "Running Scared" made #48, and "Dream Baby" was #396.
6. What was song #307 on the Big 500 countdown? "My love don't give me presents. I know that she's no peasant. Only ever has to give me, Love forever and forever. My love don't give me presents."

Answer: She's a Woman

From the soundtrack of the movie "Help!", "She's a Woman" is a McCartney/Lennon composition that I don't believe was ever released as a single.
Also by the Beatles, "Hey Jude" occupied the #4 spot of the countdown, "All My Loving" was #39, and "All You Need is Love" was #34.
7. What was the #257 song on the oldies countdown for 2004? "Well, take me back down where cool water flows, yeah. Let me remember things I love. Stoppin' at the log where catfish bite, Walkin' along the river road at night, Barefoot girls dancin' in the moonlight."

Creedence Clearwater Revival has often been referred to having a southern, bayou sound. "Green River" was one of 10 Top Ten hits that they charted between '68 and '71.
Also by Creedence Clearwater Revival, "Proud Mary" was #79 on the countdown, "Bad Moon Rising" was #132 and "Down on the Corner" was #358.
8. What was the #5 song on the countdown? "Why she had to go, I don't know, she wouldn't say. I said something wrong, Now I long for _________."

Answer: Yesterday

"Yesterday" spent 4 weeks on top of the charts in the US. It was unique, at the time of its recording, because the only Beatle who actually played in the song was Paul. He sang, played acoustic guitar, and was accompanied by a string quartet.
9. What was the #72 song on the Big 500 countdown? "Spring was never waiting for us, girl, It ran one step ahead, As we followed in the dance. Between the parted pages, and were pressed, In love's hot, fevered iron, Like a striped pair of pants."

Answer: MacArthur Park

"MacArthur Park" was written by Jimmy Webb for Richard Harris, and made it to number two on the charts. Interestingly enough, it was the Donna Summer, disco-flavoured remake of the song that managed to make it to number one. MacArthur Park was a real park that could be found on Wilshire Blvd, somewhere between Santa Monica and Los Angeles.
"Blue Moon", by the Marcels, was #111 on the countdown, "God Only Knows", by the Beach Boys, was #152 and "Theme From a Summer Place", by Percy Faith, was #170.
10. What song was voted #126 on the countdown? "When the night has come, And the land is dark, And the moon is the only light we see. No, I won't be afraid, Oh, I won't be afraid..."

Answer: Stand By Me

Ben E. King started singing in a church choir, then moved up to a street corner doo wop group, before graduating to various recording contracts. "Stand By Me" became his biggest hit, and his signature piece. Rob Reiner resurrected the song when he released his film "Stand By Me", which was an adaptation of Stephen King's short story, "The Body".
"When a Man Loves a Woman", by Percy Sledge, made #97 on the countdown, "The Wanderer", by Dion, was #127, and "Nobody But Me", by Human Beinz, was #458.
