Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This song is a sci-fi one, written and sung by Brian May, and it is about the Volunteers who go to space for a year long voyage that really ends up to be 100 years long. Some of the lyrics include, "Here the ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn..."

Answer: '39

The song starts out cheerful when the Volunteers leave Earth to go out to space hoping to bring back useful information (in the year of '39). It ends 100 years later when they come home (in the year of '39) and all of their loved ones are gone. They come back to the "land that their grandchildren knew".
2. This song was written by Freddie Mercury and it is about his anger towards their management. One of the lines in this song is, "Do you feel like suicide...."

Answer: Death on Two Legs

The man this song was written about cheated Queen out of thousands of dollars just as they were getting popular. Freddie was very angry with the management as he expressed in this song. The manager, it seems, didn't realize it was about him!
3. A Freddie Mercury song written for Mary Austin, it reads: "Back. Hurry back. Please bring it back home to me, because you don't know what it means to me..."

Answer: Love of my Life

Freddie wrote this song about Mary Austin, Freddie's 'wife'. Though they never actually married, Mary Austin once said, "We lived by our vows, through sickness and in health, for rich or for poor..." Freddie left Mary his house ("The Garden Lodge"), among with other things, in his will.
4. Some of the lyrics to this song are "I go out to work on Monday morning..." This song was written by Freddie Mercury and his voice is distorted using a bucket.

Answer: Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon

This song is also written by Freddie Mercury and is a very up-beat and cheerful song. The song was recorded first with Freddie singing it normally. Then they replayed the recording in a bucket and re-recorded with a microphone sitting somewhere outside of the bucket. No synthesisers were used to achieve the sound, just a lot of clever thinking!
5. One of their more popular songs, it was written by John Deacon for his wife. In this song Freddie sings the words, "My feelings are true..."

Answer: You're My Best Friend

John and his wife have 6 children and he retired from Queen to spend more time with them and for other non-related reasons. John Deacon also wrote "Another One
Bites the Dust". His first song to go on an album was "Misfire" and it was off of "Sheer Heart Attack".
6. Roger Taylor wrote and also sings this song. Some of the lyrics include, "The machine of a dream, such a clean machine..."

Answer: I'm in Love With my Car

Roger jokingly wrote this song for one of his riding buddies who owned a Triumph TR4 and was obsessed with it. Some more of the lyrics are, "Told my girl I'd have to forget her, rather buy me a new carburettor." Roger sings this one from his drum set, when on stage. His first song to be on a Queen album was
"Modern Times Rock 'n' Roll" and that song is on their first album, "Queen". He sings that song, too.
7. Freddie Mercury wrote this number with the lyrics, "I feel so romantic, can we do it again? Can we do it again sometime?" Queen also used some interesting tricks to get the sounds of kazoos and tap dancers into this song.

Answer: Seaside Rendezvous

The 'woodwind' section of this song (the part that sounds like kazoos) is really vocals done by Roger and Freddie. The tap dancing sound comes from thimbles being tapped on a piece of metal; this was also done by Roger and Freddie.
8. Brian May wrote this song because of a dream he had. It is a fairly dark song with the words: "Peace all around may be your fortune..."

Answer: Prophet's Song

This song is about a dream Brian had about Noah's Ark and The Flood. It is also the longest track on the album. It has a lot of harmonies as well as echo-like rounds. Some of the other lyrics to this almost 9 minute song are, "I dreamed I saw on a moon lit stair, spreading his hands on the multitude there."
9. This song is usually performed without lyrics. It was arranged by Brian May.

Answer: God Save The Queen

"God Save the Queen" is Britan's national anthem and they used this song to end most of their concerts. Brian originally did this song on a piano, but then did it again with layers of guitars. They later edited the piano out.
10. Finally, what Queen album was the first to feature their magnum opus "Bohemian Rhapsody"? Hint: it also featured all the other songs on this quiz.

Answer: A Night at the Opera

The other songs off this album are "Sweet Lady" and "Good Company". "A Night at the Opera" was released in 1975 and was their fourth album. "A Day at the Opera" is not a real Queen album.

"A Day at the Races" was released after it in 1976 and "Sheer Heart Attack" preceeded it in 1974. It spent 50 weeks on the chart, reached number 1, and went Platinum.
