Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Choose the song with the following lyric: "And I can't believe it's come to this- all our secret codes and battleships."

Answer: Don't Give Up

"Don't Give Up" is the song on "Secret Codes and Battleships" that contains the lyrical reference to the album's title. On Darren's previous albums, the reference to the album's title was found in "Words" for "This Delicate Thing We've Made", "I Like the Way" for "The Tension and the Spark," and "Spin" for "Spin."
2. Complete the following lyric: "You'd be better off..."

Answer: with somebody else

This lyric is taken from the song called "Hurt". The demo for "Hurt" was released on the collector's edition of the album and sounds more like a country song than a pop song.
3. Choose the song with the following lyric: "And kindness erases, a city of strangers; deep down in my bones all I wanna do is crawl back home to you."

Answer: Cruel Cruel World

"Cruel Cruel World" was one of the final songs written for "Secret Codes and Battleships." Darren wrote this song with Brian West, who co-wrote some of Nelly Furtado's albums in the past.
4. Choose the song with the following lyric: "And I want you, and that's so terrifying. And I want you, to help put out the fire."

Answer: Taken by the Sea

"Taken by the Sea" is the first song on the album and was co-written with Steve Young and Robert Conley. Steve often plays guitar during Darren's live shows and this was the first song he ever co-wrote with Darren. Robert has written many songs with Darren in the past, including tracks on each of his three previous solo efforts.
5. Complete the following lyric: "You hit me like a subway train..."

Answer: and I will never be the same

This lyric is part of the chorus for "Bloodstained Heart". Shortly before the song was released as a single, Darren shared the emotional music video online. The digital EP for "Bloodstained Heart" includes remixes and the song "Ending Before I Begin" as a b-side.
6. Complete the following lyric from "Black Out the Sun": "Go, turn all the fruit into bitter wine..."

Answer: it was only sweet when you were mine

"Black Out the Sun" was one of the many songs on this album which Darren wrote with Carl Falk. The epic music video for this song contains much of the imagery associated with the album and depicts Darren struggling with his "demons" in a barren, sandy place.

If the lyrics "just a twist in time, and you could be mine," seemed familiar, it is because they are actually from a Savage Garden song called "Mine."
7. Choose the song with the following lyric: "You've been hiding away. You've been hiding away."

Answer: Perfect

"Perfect" is a song found in the bonus tracks for "Secret Codes and Battleships." It was written with Rick Nowels who also co-wrote songs such as "Like It or Not" and "Creepin' Up on You" from Darren's first solo album, "Spin." Some of the music and vocals from "Perfect" (including the above lyric) can be heard in one of Darren's many "Making of the Album" video blogs.
8. Complete the following lyric: "No it's not a rehearsal..."

Answer: you only get one life, so make it right

This lyric is taken from "Roses," which was co-written with Walter Afanasieff. "Walter A" also produced songs from Savage Garden's sophomore album "Affirmation" and Darren's first solo album, "Spin."
9. Choose the song with the following lyric: "My friends tell me I should look around for somebody new. But they don't know you."

Answer: God Walking Into the Room

"God Walking Into the Room" is often confused with one of Darren's b-sides from "This Delicate Thing We've Made" called "God Is in the Room." However, they are drastically different songs.

The famous DJ Wayne G (who has remixed a number of Darren's previous songs) mashed up "God Walking Into the Room" with Madonna's song, "Like a Prayer."
10. Choose the song with the following lyric: "I've been walking around with my head in the dirt. I've been stripped of everything that ever made me come first."

Answer: Stupid Mistake

The emotional music video for "Stupid Mistake" was filmed in black and white and was directed by Darren's partner Richard Cullen. It features Darren sitting at a dressing room mirror putting on and removing makeup. The character in the music video is also present in Darren's tour for this album, which was called "The Secret Tour."
