Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It's rare an outtake becomes a signature song, but that is preciously the status of Bob Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell". Over the years Bob Dylan has recorded some great music. One such song is "Blind Willie McTell". Written for "Infidels", Dylan, for whatever reason, chose to leave the song off that 1983 album, greatly angering his producer at the time. Who was his producer?

Answer: Mark Knopfler

Mark Knopfler is the lead singer for Dire Straits. He has long maintained that had he been present at the final mixing and track selection for "Infidels", it would have been a much different album. Knopfler had to go on tour during the final production of the album.
2. Sylvester Stallone requested Survivor write their signature single "Eye of the Tiger" after he was unable to obtain licensing rights to what song for the cinematic masterpiece "Rocky III"?

Answer: "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen

Beginning in July 1982, Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" went to Number One for six weeks. According to the Internet Movie Database, originally Stallone wanted "Another One Bites the Dust", but Queen refused to license their work, which proved a huge career break for Survivor. The track won the Grammy award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group.

Jim Peterik, one of the key writers of the song, also said this: "When we got the initial rough cut of the movie, the scene that 'Eye Of The Tiger' appears in was cut to 'Another One Bites The Dust' by Queen. Frankie and I are watching this, the punches are being thrown, and we're going, 'Holy [expletive], this is working like a charm.' We called Stallone and said, 'Why aren't you using that?' He goes, 'Well, we can't get the publishing rights to it.' Frankie and I looked at each other and went, 'Man, this is going to be tough to beat.' We had the spirit of, 'We've got to try to top this.' I started doing that now-famous dead string guitar riff and started slashing those chords to the punches we saw on the screen, and the whole song took shape in the next 3 days."
3. There's always been a heavy emphasis on sexuality in Madonna's work. The video for Madonna's signature song "Like a Prayer" from 1989 features Madonna in a romantic liaison with what Catholic saint?

Answer: Martin de Porres

Mary Lambert, who also directed the videos to "Borderline", "Like a Virgin", "Material Girl" and "La Isla Bonita", made the video with Madonna in 1989. The video was highly controversial due to burning crosses, the various Catholic references, and Madonna developing stigmata. Martin de Porres could also be interpreted as a black Christ.
4. What Journey song reportedly inspired Kansas' signature song "Carry on Wayward Son"?

Answer: I'm Gonna Leave You

According to the liner notes of the Journey box set "Time3", the main riff of "Carry on Wayward Son" does have some similarities to Journey's 1976 track "I'm Gonna Leave You". Guitarist George Tickner co-wrote the song with the band, but left the band before Journey recorded the song.
5. Elvis, like The Beatles, has a large catalogue with several songs that could be contenders for his "signature song", and surely ""Suspicious Minds" is one of those contenders. The 1969 single "Suspicious Minds" by the King featured backup vocals from what Grateful Dead band member?

Answer: Donna Jean Godchaux

Donna Jean Godchaux provided backup vocals for this hit single before she joined The Grateful Dead. "Suspicious Minds" was Elvis's last number one single in the United States until his death in 1977. Donna meet and married Keith Godchaux in 1970. She contributed vocals to recordings by Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Cher, and The Jerry Garcia Band.

Answer: Meat Loaf

Jim Steinman originally gave both "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "Making Love (Out of Nothing at All)" to Meat Loaf for his 1982 album, "Midnight at the Lost and Found". However, Meat Loaf's record company refused to pay Steinman for the songs. Bonnie Tyler recorded "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in 1983 and had a huge hit with it. Air Supply had made "Making Love (Out of Nothing At All)" a hit as well.

8. Who almost pulled "Billie Jean", one of Michael Jackson's signature songs, from the 1982 album "Thriller"?

Answer: Quincy Jones

Quincy Jones, Jackson's producer, vehemently disliked "Billie Jean", and did not think it was strong enough to be on the album. Jackson insisted the track to be on the album, and the rest is history. Jackson said: "A musician knows hit material. Everything has to feel in place. It fulfills you and it makes you feel good. That's how I felt about 'Billie Jean'. I knew it was going to be big when I was writing it."

"Billie Jean" became one of the biggest hits of 1983. Bruce Swedien mixed the song ninety one times before Jackson was satisfied.

The song was the first by the band to have a music video. The song peaked at Number Nine on the Billboard Top 100 and hit Number One on the Mainstream Rock chart.
10. In 1965, The Byrds burst onto the scene with what many feel is their definitive song: the jangle pop masterpiece "Mr. Tambourine Man". How many members of The Byrds were actually on the recording?

Answer: Only one

The Byrds had access to the recording made by Dylan and Ramblin' Jack Elliot in the sessions for "Another Side of Bob Dylan". Dylan scrapped that version and re-recorded the song for "Bringing It All Back Home". The Byrds' version came out a mere two weeks after Dylan's. Roger McGuinn is the only member of The Byrds actually on the recording; the rest of the musicians were session players from L. A.
