Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Styx hit the Springbok Top Five in South Africa with this power ballad in 1975, while in 1980, Kenny Rogers had his only Billboard Hot 100 solo number one in USA with a track with the same title in 1980. What is the song title?

Answer: Lady

The track by Styx certainly was a sleeper as it was originally released on the 1973 album, "Styx II", but once it took off there was no stopping it as, apart from chart success in South Africa, it became their first of many top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA.

The Kenny Rogers song, five years later could have so easily been a Commodores hit, as it was written by Lionel Richie while still a member of the band, for them to record, but they turned it down, leaving Kenny Rogers to take it all the way to the top.

Interestingly, one of the Commodores' last big hits before Richie left to go solo, was "Lady (You Bring Me Up)", but this "Lady" was written by Harold Hudson, William King and Shirley Hanna-King.
2. Spandau Ballet in 1983, Prince in 1995 and Kiiara in 2015, all had hits with the same one word title. What was this precious title?

Answer: Gold

Spandau Ballet were riding the crest of a "new wave" wave when they released "Gold" in 1983 and it swiftly shot to number two on UK charts as well as performing well in France, Spain and Netherlands, hitting the top five in all three countries.
"Gold" by Prince, or unpronounceable squiggle as he was commonly called at this time due to his name change, was also a hit in UK, reaching the top ten, but didn't fare as well in other countries, and stalled at number 88 on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA.
Kiiara's 2015 hit, "Gold" was a huge hit in Australia and Romania and peaked at number 13 in her native USA on the Billboard Hot 100. Elsewhere, the reception varied greatly for this singer that has been described as a cross between Ellie Goulding and Lorde. On the Canadian Hot 100, she went top 20, while in UK, it struggled to crack the top 50 and while she reached number 13 in Lebanon, it didn't even enter the top 40 in Germany.
3. In 2014, Ne-Yo had a Billboard Hot 100 top 20 hit with this track featuring a contribution from Juicy J, while in 2019, former Blur guitarist Graham Coxon released a track with the same title as part of his original score for a Channel 4 TV show, starring Alex Lawther and Jessica Barden, the title of which can't be used on FT. What is the song?

Answer: She Knows

NeYo's song was also a top 30 hit on UK charts, and that was pretty much it. It charted in several other countries but only in lower positions, and nothing like the success he had in the mid 2000s, when tracks such as "So Sick" (2006), "Sexy Love" (2006) and "Closer" (2008) all went top ten around the world.
Graham Coxon has released two albums of original material as the soundtrack for Channel 4 show, which aired between 2017-2019, most of which has been met with critical acclaim, especially "She Knows" (2019), which has been described as dark, disturbing, creepy and haunting.
4. This song was written by the Bee Gees and was a Canadian number one for them in 1968 and in 1996, Boyzone took their cover of this track to number one in UK, while in 1982, F.R. David took a different song with the same title to number one in West Germany. What is the title?

Answer: Words

"Words" (1968) by the Bee Gees has been covered by a variety of artists, including Elvis Presley, Rita Coolidge and Shawn Colvin, as well as country stars Glen Campbell, Lynn Anderson and Barbara Mabdrell, but it was for Irish lads Boyzone that it became a huge hit, giving them their first UK number one as well as being a top five hit in Sweden, Taiwan and Austria.

F.R. David's 80s hit, "Words" (1982) was the only major hit for this Tunisian-born French singer, although number one in eleven different countries and top ten in at least six more is quite the feat. I'm guessing that he made a nice amount of money from this one track, even if the fame wasn't lasting, as it was written by Robert Fitoussi, which is the real name of none other than F.R. David.
5. A Christine McVie-penned track from Fleetwood Mac's mega selling "Rumours" album (1977), shares its name with a Liam Gallagher penned track from "Heathen Chemistry" (2002) by Oasis, as well as with a Kenny G hit from 1987. What is the title?

Answer: Songbird

Fleetwood Mac's "Songbird" (1977) is a beautiful, haunting song that was both written and performed by Christine McVie, and has also been covered by Willie Nelson and released as a posthumous single by Eva Cassidy.

"Songbird" (2002) by Oasis was the first track from the band that was written by Liam Gallagher, the majority of their tracks being written by brother Noel. The song was a top five hit for the band in both UK and Canada, but failed to chart significantly anywhere else.

Kenny G's "Songbird" (1987), on the other hand was a huge hit in USA, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100, but apart from some minor chart success in UK, went largely unnoticed elsewhere.
6. Probably the best known track from Warrant was a Billboard Hot 100 hit in USA in 1989. This track shares its name with Bryan Adams track from 1985 that reached number one on the same chart. Which track?

Answer: Heaven

The track "Heaven" (1989) from Warrant, from their "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich" album of the same year, reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA, only kept off the top spot by "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" from "non group", Milli Vanilli. Although the track also went top five in Norway and Canada, it tanked in UK, barely entering the top 100.

The Bryan Adams song of the same name from 1985 was more successful, reaching the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA, as well as entering the top 40 in UK. Strangely, one place where it wasn't as successful was his native Canada, where "Heaven" failed to break into the top ten.
7. George Michael's last original single release before his death in 2016 shares its name with a 2015 album from the Corrs. It is also the English translation of Marco Borsato's 2008 hit, "Wit licht". What is the title?

Answer: White Light

George Michael's track, "White Light" (2012) came out four years before his death, and although he released three further singles in his lifetime, they were all cover versions taken from his live album, "Symphonica" (2014), making "White Light" his last original single.

The Corrs album of the same name from 2015 was their comeback album after a year on hiatus while the band members concentrated on solo projects. The album performed well in UK, reaching number 11 in UK charts and number nine in Scotland as well as number ten in their native Ireland, but overall found its highest chart placing in Switzerland where it reached number seven.

Marco Borsato has had many top ten hits on the Dutch charts, including over a dozen number one records, one of which was "Wit licht" in 2008, the fourth in a run of six consecutive number ones. Borsato has recorded with artists as diverse as Andrea Bocelli and Armin van Buuren during his long career.
8. 702 had a huge hit on UK dance chart in 1999 with this track that shares its name with a Helen Shapiro UK number one from 1961. Both of these songs share a title with a Billboard Hot 100 2006 hit from Eminem, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks and Ca$his. What's the title?

Answer: You Don't Know

"You Don't Know" (1961) was Helen Shapiro's first UK number one and was followed the same year by another, "Walkin' Back to Happiness". She had a 30 year singing career, but found chart success hard to come by after "Little Miss Lonely" from 1962.

The track of the same name from the 2006 album, "Eminem Presents: The Re-Up" by Shady Records stablemates, Eminem, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks and Ca$his, just failed to break the top 30 in UK, but went all the way to number 12 in USA on the Billboard Hot 100 and had its biggest success in Ireland where it was a top five track.

Las Vegas band 702 had a minor top 40 hit in UK with their 1999 track, "You Don't Know", but it was in dance charts where this track really moved. In UK Dance Chart it was a top three hit, while in the UK R&B chart it was a top ten hit. In their home country of USA, the track struggled, reaching its highest position in the Billboard R&B chart, where it peaked at number 50.
9. A 2007 Billboard Hot 100 number one from Maroon 5, a minor 1984 UK hit from former Jam member Bruce Foxton and a 2017 EP track from R&B star Ella Mai all share the same title, but what is the title?

Answer: Makes Me Wonder

When it was released by Maroon 5 in 2007, "Makes Me Wonder" made history by achieving the biggest jump ever to number one in the Billboard Hot 100 in USA, moving from number 64 to the top spot in a week.
Although the track also went top ten in many other countries, Canada was the only other major market in which it hit the top spot, with "Umbrella" by Rihanna featuring Jay-Z holding it off in many charts.

British R&B star, Ella Mai, has been slowly building her fan base since her debut EP, "Time" in 2016, which including a track featuring Ty Dolla Sign and her 2017 EP, "Ready" was the breakthrough one for her, featuring the tracks "Makes Me Wonder", "Breakfast In Bed" and her U.S. Billboard Hot 100 top five hit, "Boo'd Up".
10. The answers to questions one to nine all form part of the lyrics to which 1971 song, which closed side one of one of the all time classic rock albums?

Answer: Stairway To Heaven

Led Zeppelin's fourth album, from 1971, is one of the finest rock albums ever produced and provided us with one of the finest classic rock songs ever in "Stairway To Heaven". Despite the fact that this track has never been released as a single in USA, it ranks among the most requested tracks on rock radio there and there can be no better description of the song, than that of the great Jimmy Page, who said it was "like an orgasm".
The full lyrics to the track are:

There's a LADY who's sure
All that glitters is GOLD
And she's buying a stairway to Heaven
When she gets there SHE KNOWS
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for
Oh oh oh oh and she's buying a stairway to HEAVEN
There's a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
'Cause YOU KNOW sometimes WORDS have two meanings
In a tree by the brook
There's a SONGBIRD who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it makes me wonder
There's a feeling I get
When I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking
Ooh, it MAKES ME WONDER
Ooh, it really makes me wonder
And it's whispered that soon, If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
And it makes me wonder
Your head is humming and it won't go
In case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow?
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines WHITE LIGHT and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll
And she's buying a stairway to HEAVEN"
