Sonny's birth name was James Hugh Loden. His parents and sister were all musicians and had a radio show on a Muscle Shoals station.

Sonny met Chet Atkins before he went into the service. They were both playing on the same radio station in Raleigh, North Carolina and were actually roommates for awhile before Sonny's National Guard unit was called into combat.
