A fourth song, a cover of Art Garfunkel's 'Bright Eyes' was used as part of the animated film 'Watership Down' and was only released as the B-Side to 'New Beginning'. Stephen was later dropped from Polydor Records whilst 'Stay' was still in the UK Charts.

Stephen played several roles in stage productions in London's West End as Joseph in Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Joseph and the Amazing Tecnicolour Dreamcoat', the Child Catcher in 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' and took on two pantomime roles as Dandini in 'Cinderella' and The Scarecrow in 'The Wizard of Oz'.

Stephen starred in 'Credo' which was released in 2008. The film title was changed for the North American release to 'The Devil's Curse' and was direct-to-DVD. The film's plot involves a group of college students who, after playing with a Ouija board and forming and breaking a pentagram which was binding a demon, release it and become trapped in an abandoned seminary.

The students start to be killed one by one in an illusion created by the demon but actually take their own lives. The film received mixed reviews on its UK release. During filming, cast and crew members became aware of strange occurrences.

These included a search for an unknown person watching the crew which found no such person.

Stephen became ambassador for the Cauldwell Children Charity based in Stoke-On-Trent, England. He raised thousands of pounds one Christmas after giving a special performance for the charity. While visiting one of the hospices, a young girl fell in love with the jacket Stephen was wearing. After giving it to her as a gift, the girl died within an hour of receiving the jacket.

The video for better was noted for its dark grey tone and it was the first and only video where Stephen featured with a man while the other members of Boyzone were with girls which caused uproar from members of the Catholic Church. The video was to be Stephen's last physical appearance in a Boyzone music video as he was only featured in the video for 'Gave It All Away' through film clips and photographs.

Stephen died from a pulmonary edema which caused a build up of fluid in his lungs brought on by an undiagnosed heart condition which was genetically passed down to him from his father. Stephen died in the early hours of 10th October 2009 in the flat he shared with his husband Andrew Cowles and his body was discovered later that morning. Toxicology reports confirmed he had been smoking cannabis the evening before his death.

His funeral was attended by thousands of fans and garnered mass outpouring of grief on social networking sites.

Tony Gately released 'He's Still Around' in 2012 to raise money for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young. The lyrics were in memorial to Stephen and garnered much public support from fans.
