The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota Quiz

One of my favorite Weird Al songs, "The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota", tells the story of the family that has one goal on their vacation--to see that "glorious sphere" of twine up north. See how well you know the lyrics to the great travel song!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For whom does Weird Al work?

Answer: Big Roy

In the song, Weird Al worked all year at Big Roy's Heating and Plumbing. In return, along with his paychecks, he got two weeks of vacation.
2. What fictional character's comic books did Weird Al and his family take with them on the journey?

Answer: Spiderman

Along with those comic books, the family took crossword puzzles (one of my favorites), and such snacks as potato skins and pickled weiners.
3. What flavor is Mama's homemade pie that is also taken with the family as well?

Answer: Rhubarb

Mama's homemade rhubarb pie, along with all of the other items, were brought with Weird Al in the car on the 3-day journey. The pie doesn't make another lyrical appearance, but the pickled weiners do!
4. What relation to Weird Al is Bernie?

Answer: None of these

Actually, Bernie is just a guy the family picked up. He happened to be holding up a sign that read "Twine Ball or Bust."
5. What year make is the family's Desoto that takes them on their journey?

Answer: 1953

It is a 1953 Desoto, and I find it interesting that an earlier line states he puts a Slim Whitman tape in. Neither cassettes nor 8-tracks would have been around in 1953 to have that feature in the vehicle.
6. One of the previous places the family went on their journey was a "World" devoted to what fruit?

Answer: Cranberry

As well as going to "Cranberry World", the family visited Elvis-o-Rama, The Tupperware Museum, and The Mecca of Albino Squirrels.
7. Before going to The Twine Ball, Weird Al and his family stopped at a Hall of Fame devoted to what sport?

Answer: Shuffleboard

Yes, another place was The Shuffleboard Hall of Fame, as well as Poodle Dog Rock, and generic ghost parks and wax museums. And, my personal favorite was the place where they drove through the middle of a tree.
8. About how long did it take Weird Al and his family to travel from Minnesota's state line to the destination where the Twine Ball was?

Answer: 58 minutes

It only took them 58 minutes to get to the Twine Ball. At 6:39, they cross the state line, and at 7:37, they first saw a glimpse of the Twine Ball in the distance. They actually travelled 50 miles in 58 minutes.
9. The song "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall" is sung by the kids when they see the Twine Ball exit sign for what time that day?

Answer: 27th time

Those kids must be out of breath after singing it for 26 times already, and now, they're going on their 27th time! Right after that, they have to make a pit stop at the gas station.
10. Besides pickled weiners of course, what flavor is the diet soda that Weird Al picks up at the Last Chance gas station?

Answer: Chocolate

Even with a pit stop to the gas station for pickled weiners and a chocolate soda, the family still gets to the Twine Ball in less than an hour.
11. On what day of the week do Weird Al and his family arrive at the Twine Ball's "makeshift pagoda"?

Answer: Wednesday

The pagoda is open on weekdays from 10-8, according to the song, so the "one night" at the beginning of the song must refer to Sunday. It took them three days to get to the pagoda, which is now Wednesday.
12. According to Weird Al, how many pounds does the Twine Ball weigh?

Answer: 21,140

The actual Twine Ball in Darwin, Minnesota weighs around 17,000 pounds, but Weird Al makes it in this song 21,140 pounds. Maybe it sounds good in the lyrics.
13. Which of the following is not one of the things mentioned that Weird Al bought at the Twine Ball Gift Shop?

Answer: Keychains

The miniature twine ball may be similar to a keychain, but it is not necessarily that way. Of course, Weird Al "buys anything else they'd sell us."
14. Towards the end of the journey, what item of Weird Al's did Bernie steal and run away with?

Answer: Camera

He doesn't take the wallet (or the pickled weiners), but he does take Weird Al's brand new Insta-matic that he just bought as they stood by the Twine Ball for a picture.
15. To where does Weird Al think the ball would reach if it was unrolled?

Answer: Fargo, North Dakota

The actual ball is 40 miles in circumference; the distance may not be exact, of course, but North Dakota makes a good rhyme with Minnesota, nevertheless. I'm not even sure if Mt. Rushmore is a town or not!
