Styx released 15 albums between 1972 and 2005. Creative tensions saw the most successful lineup split when guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw departed after the album "Kilroy Was Here" was released in 1983. He and his counterpart, keyboardist/vocalist Dennis DeYoung, tried to reunite, but only one album 1999's "Brave New World" resulted from it. DeYoung left and Shaw stayed in until the band's full breakup.

In 1991, flamboyant lead singer and keyboardist Freddie Mercury died of AIDS complications. Bassist John Deacon retired in 1997. Guitarist Brian May earned a PhD in astrophysics in 2007. He and drummer Roger Taylor reformed the band. First they worked with vocalist Paul Rodgers, veteran of Free, Bad Company and The Firm. Later, Adam Lambert filled the lead vocalist role.

Greg Lake sang and played bass and rhythm guitar. Carl Palmer played drums and was among the elite drummers in any genre. Emerson died on March 10th, 2016 from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
