Tribute Records II Trivia Quiz

Tribute records are always a very mixed bag. Very often one wonders if the artist that's supposed to be celebrated isn't offended by the sacriligeous deeds done to his oeuvre. This isn't a quiz about those records, but the cool ones instead.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I don't know how it is possible that I forgot to include this album in my previous 'Tribute Albums' quiz, because it's without a doubt one of the best tribute albums ever. The songs covered include "Barstool Blues", "Don't Let It Bring You Down", "Mr. Soul", "Winterlong" and "Words". The artists include the Flaming Lips, Pixies, Nick Cave, Bongwater and Dinosaur Jr. What album is this?

Answer: "The Bridge: A Tribute To Neil Young"

"The Bridge" was released in 1989 on Caroline records. The full line up was Soul Asylum, Victoria Williams, the Flaming Lips, Nikki Sudden, Loop, Nick Cave, Bongwater, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Psychic TV, Dinosaur Jr, Henry Kaiser, BALL. The Pixies' take on "Winterlong" is near legenday, but personally I prefer Sonic Youth's gutbusting version of "Computer Age".
2. The album "Beyond The Wildwood" featured songs by a dearly missed artist, such as "Apples and Oranges", "Octopus", "Baby Lemonade" and "Scream Thy Last Scream". They were covered by bands like the Television Personalities, The Shamen, the Mock Turtles and The Soup Dragons. Who was this a tribute to?

Answer: Syd Barrett

"Beyond The Wildwood" was released in 1984, on Imaginary Records. The full line up was: The Mock Turtles, Plasticland, SS-20, Paul Roland, Fit And Limo, The Shamen, Opal, The Ashes In The Morning, The Lobster Quadrille, The Paint Set, Tropicana Fishtank, The T.V. Personalities, The Soup Dragons, The Green Telescope.

They covered both early Pink Floyd songs, written by Syd Barrett, as songs from his solo albums. Best was the Television Personalities version of the Floyd's third single "Apples and Oranges".

When embarking on his first solo tour, Pink Floyd member David Gilmour took the Television Personalities with him as support act, because he was charmed by their song about his longtime friend: "I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives". But after the first concert they were kicked off the tour, because at the finish of the song singer Dan Treacy actually announced the address of the reclusive Syd Barrett to the audience.
3. Although there's a rather unflattering caricature of him on the cover, this 1992 album is meant to be a tribute to a legendary songwriter and singer. The songs on the album include "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window", "Sitting On A Barbed Wire Fence" and "It Ain't Me Babe". The covering people are among others Thin White Rope, the Boo Radleys, Lee Ranaldo (of Sonic Youth fame) and a mysterious project called Thurston, Kim And Epic. Who are they honouring here? And what's the album called?

Answer: Bob Dylan - "Outlaw Blues"

"Outlaw Blues" was released on Imaginary Records, who seemed to be in business solely to release tribute albums. It featured Thurston, Kim And Epic (which is of course Sonic Youth's frontal couple Moore/Gordon with former Swell Maps drummer Epic Soundtracks), the Bluebirds, Lee Ranaldo, Anastasia Screamed, Spirea X, the Poster Children, Thin White Rope, the Original Sins, the Cuckoos, the Boo Radleys.

In '95 Imaginary Records released "Outlaw Blues Volume Two", which featured Lee Ranaldo again, along with PJ Harvey, Magnapop, Chuck Prophet (ex-Green On Red) and some other people as well.
4. Just like the previous two records this one was also released by Imaginary Records. It featured artists like Nirvana, the Telescopes, the Wedding Present, Buffalo Tom and Screaming Trees covering songs like "Lady Godiva's Operation", "She's My Best Friend", "What Goes On" and "European Son". What record is this?

Answer: "Heaven And Hell: A Tribute To The Velvet Underground"

Released in 1990 "Heaven And Hell" featured Chapter House, The Telescopes, Nirvana, The Wedding Present, Buffalo Tom, James, Screaming Trees, Motorcycle Boy, Terry Brickers & Bradleigh Smith, Ride. In 1991 "Volume Two" was released, featuring tracks by Echo and the Bunnymen, Fatima Mansions, Revenge (ft. Peter Hook of New Order), the Reegs and The Mock Turtles.

The Mock Turtles were a familar face on these Imaginary Records tribute albums, also featuring on the Syd Barrett album, and one for The Kinks, Captain Beefheart, and The Byrds.

The Mock Turtles' singer, Martin Coogan, is the brother of brilliant actor/comedian Steve Coogan. In 1992 Imaginary released a third volume of "Heaven And Hell", featuring Lee Ranaldo again, and New Fast Automatic Daffodils, Half Japanese, Eleventh Dream Day and Swervedriver.

The best tracks of these three album were later compiled on the album "Fifteen Minutes: A Tribute To The Velvet Underground".
5. Long before the Japanese band Shonen Knife released a record anywhere outside Japan, there was already a tribute album devoted to them. "Every Band Has A Shonen Knife Who Loves Them" was released in 1989, and featured fans of the band such as Redd Kross, Sonic Youth, L7 and White Flag. The success of this double album led to the bands first tour of America. What were the names of the three members of Shonen Knife?

Answer: Naoko Yamano, Atsuko Yamano and Michie Nakatani

The album, which was also released as a single album, featured Redd Kross, Freaks, Three O'Clock, Frightwig, Government Issue, L7, White Flag, Pussywillows, Big Dipper, Christmas, Pat Smear (ex-Germs, Nirvana and Foo Fighters guitarist, appears under his real name Pat Ruthensmear), Krave, Chemical People, Sonic Youth, Lunachicks, Mr. T Experience, Project Jenny & Teen Steem, Ultraviolet Eye, Angels Of Epistemology, Masters Of The Obvious, Disco Dave Landry, Ella Ohne Die Schwarzen, a band with a naughty name that I'm not allowed to mention on this website starting with Reverb ..., Death Of Samantha, Babes In Toyland, Das Damen, Dem Choclodytes, Maynards, Wendy Horowitz, Phil Blumel, Pippi Eats Cherries, Smokin' Gas Truck. Shonen Knife were aware of the fact that Redd Kross were huge fans of them, so they wrote a song called "Redd Kross" to return the favour. Sadly Redd Kross declined to cover that particular song themselves, and left it to Cleveland band Death Of Samantha.
6. This particular tribute album isn't much cop, but it's worth checking out for the contributions by Sonic Youth and Redd Kross. Those two songs were released on a 7", but if you can't find that, you'll have to get the cd, which also features contributions by American Music Club, Shonen Knife, The Cranberries (urgh) and Four Non Blondes (blecch). What album is this?

Answer: "If I Were A Carpenter - a Tribute to the Carpenters"

The full line up of the album is American Music Club, Shonen Knife, Sonic Youth, The Cranberries, Bettie Serveert, Dishwalla, Sheryl Crow, Johnette Napolitano, Redd Kross, Babes In Toyland, Cracker, Matthew Sweet, Four Non Blondes, Grant Lee Buffalo. Sonic Youth did "Superstar", one of the most moving performances they ever recorded. Their unironic love of the Carpenters is quite genuine, cfr. songs like "Tunic (Song For Karen)".
7. Do tribute bands merit a tribute album? Anyway, the Rutles weren't really a tribute band, as much as a very clever parody. What is the name of the tribute album devoted to them?

Answer: "Rutles Highway Revisited"

Indeed, it was the only name that didn't refer to The Beatles but to Bob Dylan. Which is kinda strange, seeing as the Rutles made nothing but parodies and send-ups of Beatles tunes. "Rutles Highway Revisited" was released on Shimmy Discs in 1991 and featured Galaxie 500, the Pussywillows, Bongos, Bass & Bob, Lida Husik, Dogbowl, Das Damen, Syd Straw & Marc Ribot, Joey Arias, When People Were Shorter & Lived Near The Water, Unrest, Peter Stampfel & The Bottlecaps, The Tinklers, Tuli Kuppferberg, Daniel Johnston, Uncle Wiggly, Shonen Knife, Jellyfish Kiss, King Missile, Paleface, Bongwater. Which was more or less the entire Shimmy Disc roster.
8. With the slogan "If you think a Tribute to ... ... is a dumb idea then we're two times DUMB because this is Volume Two!!" Spanish records label Munster released two 7" singles in 1998 featuring artists like Thin White Rope, Pansy Division with Calvin Johnson, the Coyote Men and Ben Vaughn recording songs like "How Does That Grab You Darling", "Sand" and "Jackson". Who were they celebrating?

Answer: Nancy Sinatra

The full line up of the first single, titled "Tribute To Nancy Sinatra", was Ben Vaughn, MAOW, Josetxo and Thin White Rope. The second 7" was called "Nancy Sinatra's Hits Vol.2" and featured Los Coyote Men, Pansy Division with Calvin Johnson, Twin Princess and Atom Rhumba. K Records label mainman and Dub Narcotic Sound System and Beat Happening vocalist Calvin Johnson teaming up with squeaky voiced Jon Ginoli of Pansy Division was a genius recreation of the pairing of Nancy's voice with the growly Lee Hazlewood.
9. In the late 90s Skin Graft records also released a tribute to a band on several 7" singles. They featured bands like Shellac, US Maple, Palace Contribution and Zeni Geva covering songs like "Big Balls", "Let There Be Rock" and "T.N.T." What Australian band were they celebrating?

Answer: AC/DC

The first record consisted of two 7" singles, called "Sides 1-4" (1996) and featured US Maple, Big'N, Brise-Glace and Shellac. The second was called "Sides 5-6" (1997) and featured Palace Contribution (one of the many guises of Will Oldham, cfr. Bonnie 'Prince' Billie, Palace Brothers etc.) and Zeni Geva.

There was also a third double 7", featuring Mount Shasta, Denison Kimball Trio, Zeek Sheck and Killdozer. All of the records came with a comic book.
10. In 1991 a host of punk bands decided to record some covers of Ramones songs, in order to celebrate the everlasting genius of Da Brudders. The album featured Mojo Nixon, L7, Bad Religion, White Flag and Jeff Dahl. What was the name of the album?

Answer: "Gabba Gabba Hey - Ramones Tribute Album"

"Gabba Gabba Hey" was the first Ramones tribute album ever. A lot more would follow later. "Blitzkrieg Over You" (1998) featured Motörhead, Nina Hagen and The Dirty Scums. "Ramones Maniacs" (2001) featured Courtney Ono, The Frantics and The Young Hasselhoffs.

The Belgian Tribute double album "1,2,3,4" (2001) featured Kloot Per W, Daan, Paranoiacs, De Bossen, the Kids, Golden Green and Neven. In 2002 "Ramones Forever: An International Tribute" reprised a lot of those same songs on a single album. "Rock & Roll Radio" (2002) featured only Spanish bands.

The Swedish album "The Song Ramones The Same" (2002) featured Hellacopters, Whale, Sahara Hotnights, The Dictators, The Nomads, Wayne Kramer and Danko Jones. The 2002 Japanese album "Do You Remember Rock'n'Roll High School - Adios Joey Ramone" featured the 5.6.7.8's, who you know from "Kill Bill 1" and who chose their name just to prove they could count to more than the Ramones.

Then there was "We're A Happy Family" (2003) featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Waits, the Pretenders and U2. 2003 also saw the release of a French album called "Ramones Addicts", two from Argentina called "Tocando Ramones" and "Hoy Los Ramones Manana El Mundo" and another one from Japan called "Something To Believe In".

In 2004 Las Vegas bands got in on the act with the album "Sniffin' Glue". Furthermore there was "Todos Somos Ramones" (2005), a double cd featuring Sylvain Sylvain, the Adicts, the Boys, the Lurkers, Fuzztones, Stiv Bators and Alternative TV. 2005 also saw the release of "All Good Cretins Go To Heaven", which featured Tribute To Nothing, a Russian album called "RamonesKidz" and a Norwegian one called "Leaving Home" featuring Clawfinger. And lastly, but not leastly in the slightest: "The Rockabilly Tribute to the Ramones" (2005), which is very sketchy about the details of what band(s) actually played the music on the cd. Then there's also "Life's A Gas - A Tribute to Joey Ramone" (2001), which doesn't feature covers, but songs about the members of the Ramones, not just Joey. A similar album is "Main Man - A tribute to Dee Dee Ramone" (2004). Still don't know what to get for Christmas?
11. In 1992 an album with the unexpected title "Surprise Your Pig" was released. Who was this album a tribute to?

Answer: R.E.M.

"Surprise Your Pig" featured contributions from Just Say No, Band Of Susans, Gumball, Steel Pole Bath Tub, Samson & the Philistines, Jawbreaker, J-Church, Phleg Camp, Mister T Experience, Flor De Mal, Punchline, When People Were Shorter & Lived Near The Water, Vic Chesnutt, King Missile, Tesco Vee's Hate Police, Jawbox, Mitch Easter. It's pretty good actually. Especially Vic Chesnutt's version of "It's The End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)".
12. When crazy bands like the Blood Brothers, The Locust, Melt Banana, GoGoGo Airheart and Glass Candy cover songs like "Ogre Battle", "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke", "Vutan's Theme (Attack of the Hawk Men)" and "Lily of the Valley" odds are you're listening to what tribute record?

Answer: "Dynamite With A Laserbeam - Queen As Heard Through The Meat Grinder Of Three One G"

As you can probably detect from the subtitle this tribute album from the San Diego label Three One G isn't very respectful to Queen, the band. Let's say there's a lot of deconstruction and shrieking going on. Very entertaining record, featuring The Blood Brothers, Get Hustle, Asterisk*, The Oath, GoGoGoAirheart, Upsilon Acrux, Sinking Body, Glass Candy, The Locust, Weasel Walter, The Spacewurm, Fast Forward, The Convocation Of ..., Bastard Noise, Tourettes Lautrec, Melt Banana.
13. When you hear songs like "Do They Owe Us A Living", "Reality Asylum", "Shaved Women" and "Our Wedding" played by bands like Useful Idiot, Maggot Slayer Overdrive, Urin-8, Ten Naked Fish and Freedom Empire Of The Umpteenth Generation, what album are you listening to?

Answer: "You've heard it all before" - Crass covers compilation

"You've Heard It All Before" was released in 1993, by Ruptured Ambitions records, with all proceeds going to Rape Crisis centers. It featured Blyth Power, Decadence Within, the Apostles, Corpus Vile, Urin-8, Obscene Females, Backbone O'Reilly, Influx, Time To Think, Useful Idiot, Mortified, Spinners, Roddy & The Six-Packs, C.D.S., Maggot Slayer Overdrive, Academy 23, M.D.M., Wordbug, Ten Naked Fish, the Desired, Radio Schizo, Freedom Empire Of The Umpteenth Generation, P.M.T., Good Grief, Wat Tyler, Anxiety Society, Oi Polloi.

It is now out of print.
14. This tribute to a legendary American band featured artists like Thurston Moore, The Meat Puppets, Treepeople, Tsunami, Free Kitten and Lou Barlow. Songs featured are "Do You Want New Wave Or Do You Want The Truth?", "Party With Me Punker", "Political Song For Michael Jackson To Sing" and "King Of The Hill". What album is this?

Answer: "Our Band Could Be Your Life - A Tribute to D Boon and The Minutemen"

15. When bands like Solex, Appendix Out, Quickspace, Saloon, Trumans Water and Future Pilot AKA cover songs like "Father To A Sister Of Thought", "Shady Lane", "Heaven Is A Truck", "Range Life" and "Shoot The Singer" it's very likely that you're listening to which of the following tribute albums?

Answer: "Everything Is Ending Here: A Tribute To Pavement"

This album was released in 2004 and featured tributes to the Nicene Creeders by Spearmint, Solex, Yuppie Flu, Bardo Pond, Number One Cup, Comet Gain, Lenola, Appendix Out, Quickspace, Saloon, Sparesnare, Fonda 500, Micevice, C Kid, Julies Haircut, Scram C Baby, El Goodo, Kicker, a band with a naughty name that I can't mention on this site starting with f, and Tindersticks.

It's an OK album, but I'd rather suggest you buy "Hospital", the first solo cd of their former drummer Gary Young.
16. This is a tribute to a band that can't be celebrated too often. It features artists like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Waits, Metallica, Kiss and Green Day covering tracks like "Havana Affair", "53rd & 3rd", "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow" and "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend". What is it?

Answer: "We're a Happy Family - a Tribute to The Ramones"

It's indeed another Ramones tribute album. Seeing as there are so many of them around, I thought I'd feature two.
17. Sometimes albums are so revered that they get their very own tribute albums. This one features artists like Vic Chesnutt, Daniel Johnston, Architecture In Helsinki and The Wedding Present doing their own versions of tracks like "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)", "Caroline No" and "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times". What album is being fêted here?

Answer: "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys

The album is titled "Do It Again: A Tribute To Pet Sounds". The title refers to Brian Wilson's notorious perfectionist tendencies with studio musicians, where he would very frequently demand his players to "do it again". All the artists on the album are Oldham Brothers, Vic Chesnutt, Nobody and the Mystic Chords of Memory with Farmer Dave, Centro-Matic, Micah P. Hinson, Raygun, Dayna Kurtz, Daniel Johnston, Mazarin, Jody Wildgoose, Patrick Wolf. Johnston's version of "God Only Knows" is particularly moving.
18. This is a double disc tribute album, the first of which features covers by artists such as Sparklehorse with the Flaming Lips, Teenage Fanclub with Jad Fair, Eels, TV On The Radio, Tom Waits, Bright Eyes, Mercury Rev and Beck. The second disc features the original artist singing his own songs, such as "King Kong", "Impossible Love", "Devil Town" and "True Love Will Find You in the End". What singer is being celebrated here?

Answer: Daniel Johnston

"The Late Great Daniel Johnston - Discovered, Covered" was released in 2004 and featured Teenage Fanclub with Jad Fair, Clem Snide, Gordan Gano, Eels, T.V. On The Radio, Rabbit, Calvin Johnson, Bright Eyes, Death Cab For Cutie, Beck, Sparklehorse with Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Thistle LLC, Vic Chesnutt, Starlight Mints, M. Ward, Guster, Tom Waits and the late great Daniel Johnston himself. Even though he's pictured on the sleeve visiting his own grave, Johnston wasn't dead at the time of this release. Later he described the experience of visiting the grave for the photo as 'confusing'.

In 2006 director Jeff Feuerzeig released the documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston"; I suggest you all go and see it. Why? Cos it's great. Oh, and Kurt Cobain used to wear Daniel Johnston t-shirts all the time.
19. The album is called "Loved Like A Milkshake". The songs are called for example "Cut The Mullet", "They Threw Me Out Of Church", "Alanis Morrissette" and "Jesus Is The Answer". And the artists are ao. Haggis Rising, The Shut-Ins, Tribal Genes, Boys Suck and The Bassturd. Who is being celebrated?

Answer: Wesley Willis

There were plans to actually release this record on cd, but as far as I know it still only exists in website form. You can download all the tracks through here: http://www.wesleytribute.org/
20. Not only artists merit tributes, egos do too. As a tribute to their own greatness this band covered some of the most influential songs in the pop canon, claiming the influences as their own. The songs were ao. "White Lines", "Perfect Day", "911 Is a Joke" and "I Wanna Take You Higher". What band was responsible for the monstrosity called "Thank You"?

Answer: Duran Duran

"Thank You" was released in 1995. It featured Duran's versions of "White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)" by Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five - even though Duran Duran were notorious cokeheads - "I Wanna Take You Higher" by Sly & the Family Stone, "Perfect Day" by Lou Reed, "Watching The Detectives" by Elvis Costello, "Lay Lady Lay" by Bob Dylan, "911 Is A Joke" by Public Enemy, "Success" by Iggy Pop, "The Crystal Ship" by The Doors, "Ball Of Confusion" by the Temptations, "Thank You" by Led Zeppelin and even a song by themselves called "Drive By" which undoubtedly fits in fine with this great list.

The Japanese version of the album also included a cover of Neil Young's "The Needle and the Damage Done". Wanna know the punchline to this colossal gag (pun intended)? Lou Reed said that "Perfect Day" was 'the best cover ever' of his own songs.

The ultimate tribute album, then?
