Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Violetta's last name?

Answer: Valery

Violetta Valery is a young lady from Paris who is very well known for her beauty and her careless way of life.
2. And what is Alfredo's last name?

Answer: Germont

Young Alfredo Germont has fallen in love with Violetta the moment he first met her.
3. What is the famous aria Violetta sings after she heard Alfredo's declaration of love?

Answer: "Sempre libera"

"Forever free" - Violetta reflects on her life and decides not to give up her freedom for the love of this young man... at least not at once. But she likes him. "Caro nome" is Gilda's aria, "La donna è mobile" might be the most popular piece by Verdi (both arias from "Rigoletto"). "Dalla sua pace" isn't even from a Verdi opera - it's Don Ottavio's aria from Mozart's "Don Giovanni".
4. What is Violetta's maid called?

Answer: Annina

Annina is very faithful and tries to help Violetta wherever she can.
5. Why does Alfredo's father want Violetta and Alfred to break up?

Answer: His daughter's fiance disapproves of Alfred's relationship with Violetta

... plus Georges Germont thinks that Violetta won't be capable of true love, anyways, because she has led the life of a courtisan. When he realizes his mistake, it is almost too late...
6. With whom does Violetta show up at Flora Bervoix' ball?

Answer: Baron Douphol

Violetta pretends to love the baron to make Alfredo leave the ball, so that he won't put up a fight with Douphal, which would put him into danger. Alfredo gets furious and throws money at Violetta - payment for the love he thinks she only pretended.
7. From which disease does Violetta suffer?

Answer: consumption

She's pining away during act three. At the premiere of the opera, the woman who played the role was very corpulent, so she didn't exactly look like one would imagine Violetta, and the premiere ended up in a real disaster. Nonetheless, "La Traviata" is today one of Verdi's most popular operas - along with "Rigoletto", "Aida", "Don Carlos", and "Othello".
8. How is the aria called that Violetta sings when she says goodbye to life?

Answer: Addio del Passato

A wonderful piece. Violetta has received a letter from Georges Germont. Alfredo's father excuses for what he asked of her and announces Alfredo's return; Yet Violetta has lost courage.
9. Do Alfredo and Violetta meet again before she dies?

Answer: Yes

Alfred rushes in, begging her forgiveness for humiliating her at the ball. The lovers are reconciled, and once again they dream of running away together. But then Violetta dies.
10. Who wrote the novel on which "La Traviata" was based?

Answer: Alexandre Dumas Jr.

"La Dame aux Camélias".
