Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who composed "Aida"?

Answer: Giuseppe Verdi

"Aida" was commissioned by the Egyptian government to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal. At first, Verdi wanted no part of it. But after reading a short sketch of the story, he was hooked.
2. True or false: The character Aida is an Egyptian princess.

Answer: False

Aida is a princess, but not an Egyptian one. She is from Ethiopia and is now a slave serving in Egypt.
3. Aida is in love with Radames. What is his vocation?

Answer: Soldier

We meet Radames in the very first scene and almost immediately he sings one of the most beautiful, yet difficult, tenor arias in opera, "Celeste Aida." It doesn't seem fair that the tenor gets his big number right at the beginning. Everyone else gets to warm up a bit.
4. Which of the following musical highlights is not featured in "Aida"?

Answer: Vissi d'arte

"Vissi d'arte" is from Puccini's "Tosca." One thing that sets "Aida" apart from many other operas is that it is so well composed that the whole work is a highlight. There are very few dry patches.
5. The last part of Act II features a brilliant passage featuring the entire cast, chorus, and usually several dozen extras, in celebration of Egypt's victory over the Ethiopians. What is this extravaganza better known as?

Answer: The Triumphal Scene

This scene never fails to move me. Not only do we have the spectacle of the crowd celebrating Egypt's victory, but the leading characters reveal their inner conflicts and problems at the same time. They are all accompanied by very passionate, stirring music.
6. Who is Aida's rival for Radames' affections?

Answer: Amneris

Amneris, the king of Egypt's daughter, plays a pivotal role in the opera. So important did Verdi consider her that he toyed with the idea of calling the opera "Amneris."
7. Radames is tricked by Aida into revealing military secrets, branding him as a traitor. Who coerces Aida into doing this?

Answer: Her father

Aida's father, Amonasoro, is the king of Ethiopia, Egypt's enemy. Radames' indiscretion marks him as a traitor and he surrenders himself to the priests. This is a very thrilling moment in the opera.
8. Radames, who is on trial for his life in the fourth act, is interrogated by the priests. What does he have to say in his own defense?

Answer: Nothing

It is not made clear why Radames says nothing; perhaps it is to protect Aida. The trial scene is another great moment in the opera. During the trial, Amneris listens in despair, as she knows the only possible fate for Radames is death.
9. Aida volunteers to die with Radames. How do they meet their death?

Answer: They are sealed inside a temple

The opera ends with Radames' and Aida's ethereal duet, "O terra, addio." Above their tomb, Amneris appears praying for Radames. The opera ends, very softly, with the violins accompanying the priests' invocations. Not too bad!
10. True or false: Verdi refunded the admission price to "Aida" to a student who wasn't very impressed with the opera.

Answer: True

Verdi did, however, refuse the student's request to be reimbursed for the money he spent for food on the train. Verdi admonished him that he could have eaten at home.
