Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Why does the sun keep on shining? Why does the sea rush to shore'? In which song does Karen Carpenter ask these questions?

Answer: The End of the World

This song was written by Arthur Kent and Sylvia Dee. The sorrow of the recent death of Sylvia's father is said to have helped inspire her. The original version was sung by a country singer Skeeter Davis who had considerable success with it during the 1960s.

The version best remembered today is by Karen and Richard Carpenter. Karen's soft low voice and Richard's arrangement really bring out the very meaningful lyrics.
2. According to the lyrics of the song by Burt Bacharach 'What do you get when you fall in love'?

Answer: Both

This song which is entitled 'I'll Never Fall in Love Again' was written by Burt Bacharach for the 1968 musical 'Promises, Promises'. Several singers recorded versions of the song. The most popular version was by Dionne Warwick and she had a big hit with it in the United States. However, my favourite is the version by Bobby Gentry who took it to number one in the U.K.
3. Which British group recorded the song 'When Will I be Famous'?

Answer: Bros

This song was first released in the U.K. in 1987, but only reached number 62 in the charts. Two years later it was re-released and reached number two. In the year 2000 it was used in a television advert for Hyundai Cars, and this led to a re-release of the album 'Push' on which it featured. Bros consisted of twin brothers Matt and Luke Goss and their friend from school Craig Logan.

After a while Craig left the band and Matt and Luke continued together until 1988.
4. 'Why can't a woman be more like a man?' is sung in which popular musical?

Answer: My Fair Lady

'My Fair Lady' is a musical based on George Bernard Shaw's play 'Pygmalion' about a professor of phonetics who takes on a challenge to pass off a common flower girl as a lady. 'Why can't a woman be more like a man' is sung by Professor Higgins when he is complaining about Eliza, his protegee, to his friend Colonel Pickering.

He is extremely smug about himself and other men being superior to women.
5. Marlene Dietrich asked in a song 'Where have all the ___________ gone? What is the word missing from the lyric?

Answer: Flowers

The tune and the first three verses were written by Pete Seeger. He got the idea from a book he was reading 'And Quiet Flows the Don' about the Don river in Russia and the Cossacks going off to war. He sang it at Oberlin College and gave it to a student, Joe Hickerson, who had a job as a counsellor at a summer camp. Joe sang it to the kids at the camp and wrote the two final verses.

Although many artists have recorded this song I feel that Marlene Dietrich, who sang it in German, French and English, made it her own.
6. Adam Faith had a Big hit in the U.K. charts in 1959 with 'What do you want?'. The first three lines of the lyrics are 'What do you want if you don't want money. What do you want if you don't want gold. Say what you want and I'll give it to you darling'. What is the fourth line?

Answer: Wish you wanted my love baby

'What do you want' was written by Les Vandyke and Len Burgess, and arranged by John Barry. It was in the U.K. singles charts for nineteen weeks, for three of which it was number one. Bobby Vee covered this single and it was well received in the U.S. Adam Faith was a teenage pop idol of the early sixties. Later he became a successful actor and was also a financial journalist.
7. The eponymous character from which musical sang 'Where is love?'

Answer: Oliver!

This musical was written by Lionel Bart based on Charles Dicken's novel 'Oliver Twist'. It opened in the west end of London in 1960, and achieved long runs both in the U.K. and on Broadway. It was subsequently made into a film which was directed by Carol Read. The film won eight Academy Awards including best picture.
8. Which group, a favourite of Prince Charles, sang 'When Will I See You Again'?

Answer: The Three Degrees

The Three Degrees sang this song which was written by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, and released in 1974. The lead singer was Sheila Fergusson, and she was accompanied by Fayette Pinkney and Valerie Holiday. The three girls performed the song at Prince Charles' thirtieth birthday celebration.
9. Ringo Starr of the Beatles asked 'What would you do if I sang out of tune? Would you stand up and walk out on me?' What does he need to get by?

Answer: A little help from his friends

This song was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney to feature drummer Ringo Starr on vocals on their album 'Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. It was subsequently recorded by Joe Cocker and was a big hit for him in 1968.
10. Which Paul Simon song begins with 'A man walks down the street. He says why am I so soft in the middle now?'

Answer: Call Me Al

This is a song about a man who is having a midlife crisis and asking himself a lot of questions like 'Who will be my role model, now that my role model has gone?' and 'What if I die here?' Although it is such a sad subject the music is very upbeat and catchy.
