Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Boy George and his band Culture Club released this hit single straight from their Platinum-plus debut album "Kissing To Be Clever". What is the missing word from the title "I'll _______ 4 Ya"?

Answer: Tumble

"I'll Tumble For You" wasn't released outside of North America, although fans back home in Blighty (England) knew the song from the album ("Kissing To Be Clever"), and it became a long-standing live favourite.

Culture Club formed in England in 1981 when Boy George left Malcolm McLaren-fabricated New Wave band Bow Wow Wow and hooked up with Mikey Craig (bass), Jon Moss (drums), and Roy Hay (guitar). Culture Club went on to outshine Bow Wow Wow commercially although Bow Wow Wow's musical influence can be heard in bands such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

2. "I'll Never Be Anybody's Hero Now" is on the 2006 album "Ringleader of the Tormentors". Which artist released this album?

Answer: Morrissey

Your guess is as good as mine as to what Morrissey was getting at on this one, but it works and it's a great track. Something about it reminds me of Edgar Allan Poe. Here's a snippet:

"They who should love me
Walk right through me
I am a ghost
And as far as I know I haven't even died
And my love is under the ground
My one true love is under the ground
And I'll never be, I'll never be, I'll never be anybody's hero now"

"Ringleader of the Tormentors" is Morrissey's eighth solo album since leaving the ground-breaking band The Smiths, and one of my favourites. The first single release off the album was "You Have Killed Me", which included a tip of the hat to controversial Italian film director Pasolini in the lyrics. Iconic Italian composer Ennio Morricone did the string arrangement on the track "Dear God Please Help Me", and three tracks feature a choir made up of Italian kids.

All this Italophilia is possibly due to the album being recorded in Rome, or maybe it's the other way around. It has been suggested that the "I'll Never Be Anybody's Hero Now"'s lyrics are actually about Rome and the ruins that are scattered about The Eternal City.

I chucked David Bowie in as an option since the album's producer Tony Visconti (blatant Italo-American roots) worked extensively with Bowie.

3. Singer Damita Jo had a US hit with an answer song to a number one hit by The Drifters. What is the title of that answer song?

Answer: I'll Save The Last Dance For You

"I'll Save The Last Dance For You" peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 for Damita Jo in 1960. It did not chart in the UK.

"Save The Last Dance For Me" was number one for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 for The Drifters in 1960. It peaked at number two on the UK singles chart the same year.

4. Irish band U2 had a hit with "I Will Follow" in 1980. It is off the band's debut album. What's that album called?

Answer: Boy

U2 fans all over the world are very thankful that drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. posted a notice on Mount Temple Comprehensive School's bulletin board about forming a band way back in 1976, and that Bono (Paul Hewson), Edge (Dave Evans), and Adam Clayton answered. Roughly ten years later the four-piece Dublin band was already amongst the biggest names in music.

5. In 1965 "I'll Keep Holding On" was a hit for a girl group from Michigan, USA. What's the name of the group?

Answer: The Marvelettes

"I'll Keep Holding On" was the first hit (number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100) to have Wanda Young singing lead after she had been favoured over long-time lead vocalist Gladys Horton by the Motown poohbahs. However, Young had already sung lead on album tracks and co-led with Horton on other single releases.

Wanda Young (aka Wanda Rodgers after she married Bobby Rogers from The Miracles in 1963) effectively usurped Horton (who left in 1967) and continued to be the lead vocalist of choice until the demise of The Marvelettes in 1970. In fact, the 1970 album "The Return of The Marvelettes" was in reality just Young and Motown's perennial backing singers The Andantes since the only founding member still involved by then, Katherine Anderson, refused to have anything to do with soiling the band's name. The other significant founding member (other than the aforementioned Horton, and folk from very early incarnations of the act) -, Georgeanna Tillman, had left the group in 1965 due to health problems.

About the red herrings: The Action released a cover of "I'll Keep Holding On" in 1966, The Lurkers' "I'll Be There With You" is on their second album "God's Lonely Men" (1979), and Twisted Sister released a very early single called "I'll Never Grow Up, Now!" in 1979.

6. Jackie Wilson had a hit with this boy-meets-girl song in which he claims he just wants to hold her hand, get a smile and a kiss. What claim was Jackie making?

Answer: I'll Be Satisfied

"I'll Be Satisfied", which was written by Motown mogul Berry Gordy and prolific songwriter Billy Davis, reached a respectable 20th position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1959. Jackie Wilson's highest chart position in the UK was a number ine with the posthumous re-release of his signature tune "Reet Petite" in 1986.

I very much doubt Mr. Wilson would have been satisfied so easily since in the high octane world of rhythm and blues/soul he made his contemporary, The Godfather of Soul/Mr. Dynamite, Mr. James Brown look like a slouch. Jackie Wilson, aka Mr. Excitement, led a hectic life littered with violence, womanizing, money trouble, and above all dynamic performances. Jackie Wilson suffered a heart attack whilst performing in 1975 which resulted in a lengthy coma for the once vigorous showman. He died in 1984.

"I'll Be Glad When You're Dead You Rascal You" was American punk heroes The Accüsed's stab at the rather threatening, bitter American standard "You Rascal You" written by Sam Theard in 1931. It had already been performed by Louis Armstrong in a film of the same name.

"I'll Come Running Over" was recorded by Lulu in 1964 and according to "The R&B Scene" compilation album, features Jimmy Page on guitar.

"I'll Be Free" was recorded by Tommy Blake. Although Tommy Blake is hardly a household name, he might have been had bad luck not plagued him. The Texan ex-Marine and jailbird recorded several cuts for both RCA and Sun Records in 1957/1958, but his first RCA release, "Honky Tonk Mind", paled into insignificance on its release since Johnny Horton had released his version just days before ill-omened Blake's came out. His other cuts (including the red herring "I'll Be Free") didn't fare much better, and although he continued to record through the 1960s, the 1970s and 1980s were unkind to him. He didn't do himself any favours either and the slippery slope of drug and alcohol abuse took their toll on his health and his personal relationships. He was shot dead by his third wife on Christmas Eve 1985, apparently dying sprawled under a Christmas tree.

7. "I'll Find My Way Home" by Jon & Vangelis was a hit in 1981. Jon, who is English, sang the vocals and Vangelis played the music. What nationality is Vangelis?

Answer: Greek

"I'll Find My Way Home" was a number six hit on the UK singles chart for Jon & Vangelis in 1981. It peaked at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982.

"I'll Find My Way Home" was written by Jon Anderson/Vangelis. It was included on the Jon and Vangelis album "The Friends of Mr Cairo", which peaked at number 17 on the UK album chart in 1981. The album was re-issued in 1982 and peaked at number six.

Jon was born John Roy Anderson in Accrington, Lancashire, England in 1944. The singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist is best known as the former lead singer in the UK progressive rock group Yes formed in 1968. They only had one UK Top 20 hit single, "Wondrous Stories" which reached number seven in 1977. They were more successful on the UK album chart where they had eleven Top Ten hits between 1971 and 2003 including two number one albums "Tales From Topographic Oceans" in 1973 and "Going For The One" in 1977.

Vangelis was born Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou in Volos, Greece, in 1943. In 1967 he formed Greek progressive rock band Aphrodite's Child with Demis Roussos (bass guitar and vocals), Loukas Sideras (drums and vocals) and Anargyros "Silver" Koulouris (guitar). Stuck in France while on their way to England, they released their first single "Rain and Tears" which was a reworking of "Pachelbel's Canon in D major". Although the song was sung in English and not French it sold over 1,000,000, copies, and was awarded a gold disc. Vangelis is probably best know for his Academy Award winning score for the film "Chariots of Fire".

8. On their self-titled debut album, southern rock gods Molly Hatchet's vocalist Danny Joe Brown predicts he will be doing something. What?

Answer: I'll Be Running

Molly Hatchet formed in 1975 in Jacksonville, Florida, the same town that had spawned southern rock's biggest name, Lynyrd Skynyrd (albeit under a different monicker), back in 1964. The band's history is intrinsically linked to Skynyrd through managers, recording studios and so on, and Molly Hatchet have even been known to include Skynyrd's signature song "Freebird" in their live set. Nevertheless, Hatchet have a sound all of their own, and it was already evident on their blistering debut opus. The track "I'll Be Running" is as good a place to start as any, as it showcases Bruce Crump's wonderful cyclic, rolling drumming, and the three-pronged guitar attack of Dave Hlubek, Steve Holland and Duane Roland.

9. We all know "She Loves You" by The Beatles, but do you know the missing word in the title of the B-Side "I'll ____ You"?

Answer: Get

"I'll Get You" was released as the B-Side of "She Loves You" a UK number one hit in 1963 and a US number one hit in 1964.

"I'll Get You" was written by Lennon/McCartney (who else). This song is quite unusual as there is no lead guitar break. It was written in John's aunt Mimi's home on Menlove Avenue, Liverpool where John lived at the time despite his aunt not approving of The Beatles.

"I'll Get You" was released again as the B-Side of "Sie Liebt Dich", a German language version of "She Loves You" by The Beatles. "Sie Liebt Dich" peaked at number 97 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964, but it was not released as a single in the UK.

10. This song was a hit for The Hollies in 1965 as "Yes I Will", but it became "I'll Be True To You" on the self-titled debut album by which "created for TV" band?

Answer: The Monkees

The Hollies had a UK hit with "Yes I Will" in 1965. A year later, it had become "I'll Be True To You" and featured on The Monkees debut album, although the only one of The Monkees who featured on the track was Davy Jones, who provided the vocals, since The Monkees' early recordings seldom featured music played by the band. They did eventually take control of the music and triumphed over the critics who had claimed they were talentless when they recorded classic albums such as "Headquarters", "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.", and "The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees".

The Rutles are a parody of The Beatles, Spinal Tap are a spoof heavy metal band, and although the Sex Pistols are a "real" band, many have claimed that their success was engineered and orchestrated by Malcolm McLaren.
