Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A famous recording artist was born on the 17th June in Brooklyn, New York City. Can you name this singer who tells us that he "writes the songs"?

Answer: Barry Manilow

Barry Manilow's 1974 smash hit "Mandy" was re-named from "Brandy" as it clashed with Looking Glass' 1972 smash "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)". He scored ten Top Tens in the Billboard Hot 100 charts with three Number Ones - "Mandy", "I Write the Songs" and "Looks Like We Made It".

His lack of popularity in the UK charts was baffling as his only Top Ten single after more than twenty entries was a Vanda-Young composition "I Wanna Do It With You" which peaked at number eight. From six releases in Australia Barry Manilow scored five Top Tens but no Number Ones.

Included in a host of top awards he earned for his music over the years were a 1980 Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a 2002 entry into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame.

Answer: Judith Durham

Judith Durham fronted Keith Potger, Bruce Woodley and Athol Guy as the very successful "Seekers" quartet. The band's first number one "Ill Never Find Another You" was written by Tom Springfield who was responsible for most of The Seeker's major hits.

The song ranked number two for sales in the UK in 1965 - not a bad effort when you consider The Beatles were riding high at that time.

His actions led to him applying for citizenship of Iceland to avoid deportation back to the USA. Robert James Fischer died from renal failure in Reykjavik on January 17th 2008.
