Answer: she was already a grandma when she began painting, and her last name at the time was Moses

3. Which of these time periods matches Grandma Moses's lifetime?

Answer: 1860-1961

She was born in Washington County, New York on September 7, 1860. She had nine siblings. She died at the age of 101, then living in Hoosick Falls, New York, a small town close to her birthplace. On her 100th and 101st birthdays, the state of New York celebrated "Grandma Moses Day." The event was covered by an extensive crew of international media reporters.
4. At what age did Grandma Moses begin to paint?

Answer: late 70s

Grandma Moses's first specialty was embroidery, which she shared with family and friends. By her 70s, she was stricken with painful arthritis and began painting pictures to create art in a less painful way. The suggestion proved to be helpful because she was able to create over 1600 works by the time she passed away.
5. Who was the one that taught Grandma Moses to paint?

Answer: she taught herself

Yes, Grandma Moses taught herself how to paint. Her works were admired by many and her old age was even more amazing to the public and serves as a great source of inspiration for many. Her story was even the subject of a successful book in the 1940s.
6. Who first discovered and recognized Grandma Moses's works?

Answer: Louis Calder

Louis Calder was an art collector who was searching for pieces to display by new artists. Before she became famous, a relative of Grandma Moses invited Calder to come see the paintings. The relative told him she had ten paintings. It turned out that Grandma had only created nine paintings so far. So, before Louis Calder arrived, Grandma Moses cut one of her paintings in half and framed both pieces, creating a grand total of ten paintings.

It didn't make a difference though, because before she knew it, she had a show in Otto Kallir's Gallerie St. Etienne in New York City.

Her show premiered in 1940, when she was 80-years-old. The title of the show was "What a Farmwife Painted." That was when it all started for Grandma Moses.
7. In which of the following groups are most of Grandma's works considered?

Answer: American folk art

Grandma Moses, although she painted in the style of American folk art, is considered by many to be in a class of her own due to lack of decent education, let alone art education, and her old age. Another categorization of her painting is under the group named "American primitives."
8. In what American city did Grandma Moses' career take off?

Answer: New York City

She had the honor of having her works displayed in galleries such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Gallerie Saint Etienne, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the 1940s and '50s.
9. Which of these is not a title of one of Grandma Moses's paintings?

Answer: Autumn Bells

Autumn bells is a title I made up! A few other titles of her works include "Thanksgiving Turkey," "Mary and Little Lamb," "The Old Oaked Bucket," "Out For the Christmas Trees," and "Little Boy Blue." Many of her paintings were included on thousands of Christmas cards.
10. Now for the last one! Which of these popular children's books did Grandma Moses illustrate?

Answer: 'Twas the Night Before Christmas

As one of her last works, Grandma Moses illustrated Clement Moore's 'Twas the Night Before Christmas in 1960. The book was published after Grandma's death in 1962. And so that ends one of the more interesting lives in American history, if not the most interesting American artists'. Thanks for playing, we hope you liked it!
