Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When did the 'Jack the Ripper' crimes take place?

Answer: Aug-Nov 1888

2. Where did 'The Ripper' crimes take place?

Answer: London

In London's East End - at the time poorest and roughest district of London.
3. How many known murders was 'The Ripper' credited with?

Answer: 5

4. 'Jack the Ripper' was not the original name given to this case. What was the original name?

Answer: The Whitechapel Murders

'Jack the Ripper' was the name signed on a letter sent to police after a number of murders had already been committed.
5. It was thought that Jack the Ripper may have been:

Answer: All of these

To this day there are many speculations on who 'The Ripper' was. It was thought it was a woman who contracted a sexual disease from her unfaithful, prostitute seeking husband. One of the suspects was Prince Albert Victor Christian Edward, Duke of Clarence and Avondale, grandson of Queen Victoria, known as Prince Eddie. Prince Eddie was known to have frequented brothels and contracted syphilis, which affected his brain and made him mentally ill. Because of the way victims were mutilated, it was said 'The Ripper' had to be a doctor who knew how to surgically cut up a body.
6. Jack the Ripper raped his victims.

Answer: False

Many serial killers are similar to 'Jack' - they kill and mutilate women, and are known as 'disorganized' criminals. They are mentally unbalanced and sex is not what they have in mind. These criminals hate or fear women and want to control, manipulate and dominate them. Sex is a key component of the crime, but in their mind the fantasy comes before the act (of murder) and their heightened satisfaction comes from the killings themselves.
7. 'Jack the Ripper' was not the criminal's real name.

Answer: True

When the Ripper slowed down for a while and no more suspects were being found, a letter came to the police signed by 'Jack the Ripper'. This was the first time police learned of this name. It was suspected that a journalist wrote this letter and invented the name for publicity. The Ripper crimes had become a gold mine for the media.
8. What did 'The Ripper' do to his victims?

Answer: slit their throats and removed body parts

This is why it was suggested at the time that Jack was a doctor. He would, with surgical perfection, cut open the abdomen and carefully remove organs, especially the intestines and uterus, and fling them over the victim's shoulder ... and without much loss of blood.
9. Who did 'Jack the Ripper' kill?

Answer: Only prostitutes

Because he killed prostitutes this lead to much speculation on who the killer was. Either a woman scorned by her husband's debauchery, a man who contracted a sexual disease from a prostitute, a man of society who thought prostitutes should be eliminated from society, a man whose wife had left him and become a prostitute.

This man was one of the principal suspects. They say he killed his wife's prostitute friends to scare her into stopping this profession and come back to him. The wife of this man was the last to be killed.

It was thought when 'Jack' saw he wasn't going to persuade his ex, he killed her ... ending his motive and these horrific crimes.
10. 'Jack The Ripper' was never caught or identified and the case is still unsolved.

Answer: True

Although there were many suspects, the crimes were never solved. Back then they did not have the technology that police have today. Some of the theories are: The criminal contracted syphilis and eventually died from it. It was the Prince Eddie and when his royal family found out they kept a tighter rein on him, making it difficult for him to get out of the palace. If you find this kind of stuff interesting there is a book called 'The Cases That Haunt Us' by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker which talks about this case and other unsolved crimes.
