Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which comedian, known for perfecting his comedic timing, once said 'My father told me all about the birds and the bees. The liar - I went steady with a woodpecker till I was twenty-one.'?

Answer: Bob Hope

Bob Hope was an English-American actor who appeared in a wide array of films, television programs, plays and other media. He is perhaps best remembered for his work with the USO, an organization that brought live entertainment to the American servicemen and women overseas.

In addition, he hosted the Academy Awards nineteen times. When he passed away in 2003 at the age of 100, his marriage to his wife Dolores was considered to be the longest in Hollywood at the time, at over 69 years.
2. Which comedian didn't get any respect for the following quote? 'If it weren't for pickpockets, I'd have no sex life at all.'

Answer: Rodney Dangerfield

Rodney Dangerfield (1921-2004) was an American comedian best known for his self-deprecating humor. His famous line was "I don't get no respect". Dangerfield, however, may be exaggerating just how poor his sex life was since he married three times (twice to the same woman) and had two kids.
3. Which very quotable woman once declared that 'brevity is the soul of lingerie"?

Answer: Dorothy Parker

Dorothy Parker (1893-1967) was an American author and member of the Algonquin Round Table whose witty sayings and sarcasm have immortalized her in literary history. Later in her life, Parker was accused of being a Communist during the 1950s Red Scare and she became blacklisted in Hollywood and literary circles. After her death, her popularity soared once more.
4. Which author, who set a number of novels at digs and was married to an archaeologist, is alleged to have said 'An archaeologist is the best husband a woman can have. The older she gets, the more interested he is in her.'?

Answer: Agatha Christie

Agatha Christie was a British author of detective fiction, perhaps the most famous mystery writer of all time. She created Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.

Although the quote is widely attributed to Agatha Christie, she did not say it. Christie was very conscious about the large age gap between her and her second husband Max Mallowan, who was fourteen years her junior. The quote, instead, was actually something Mallowan said in regards to his marriage to Christie and has been commonly misattributed to her ever since.
5. 'Whoever called it necking was a poor judge of anatomy' was said by which mustachioed performer?

Answer: Groucho Marx

Groucho Marx (1890-1977) was an American comic actor best known for being part of the Marx Brothers. Groucho famously donned horn-rimmed glasses, a mustache, bushy eyebrows, and was often seen chomping on a cigar. He was also known for his quick wit, one-liners, and impeccable delivery.
6. "Everything in the world is about sex except sex. Sex is about power." This is a quote from which man, who once got in trouble for his sex life?

Answer: Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde was an Irish author who penned such infamous works as "The Picture of Dorian Grey" and "The Importance of Being Ernest". In 1895, he imprisoned for committing homosexual acts and "gross indecency". While imprisoned, he wrote "De Profundis", but his jail time caused him to go bankrupt.

After his release, he relocated to France where he died a few years later from meningitis stemming from his time in prison where his health declined.
7. Which "Lifeboat" actress once declared that she was "as pure as the driven slush"?

Answer: Tallulah Bankhead

Tallulah Bankhead (1902-1968) was an American actress best known for her appearance in Alfred Hitchcock's "Lifeboat". Bankhead was outspoken about her sexual exploits and about sex in general. She nearly died in 1933 during a hysterectomy surgery necessitated by the rapid spread of venereal disease throughout her body, and later declared that she learned nothing from the experience.
8. "The first two facts which a healthy boy or girl feels about sex are these: first that it is beautiful and then that it is dangerous". This quote is from which Catholic writer and mystery author?

Answer: G.K. Chesterton

G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936) was a British author best known for creating the priest detective Father Brown. However, he was also a well-known author of Christian works and many Christian themes can be found in his works, both fiction and nonfiction. Many of his works discuss the issues of Chesterton's day with wit and through a Christian point of view.
9. Which "goon" once said that 'Contraceptives should be used on every conceivable occasion'?

Answer: Spike Milligan

Spike Milligan (1918-2002) was a British comedian best known for his time on "The Goon Show", which would influence "Monty Python's Flying Circus". Milligan himself may have wanted to take his own advice when it came to contraceptives since he was married three times and had six children.
10. William Shakespeare infamously referred to sex as "the beast with two backs" in which of his plays?

Answer: Othello

This classic line comes from Act I, Scene I of "Othello" when Iago tells Brabantio "I am one, sir, that comes to tell you your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs." However, Shakespeare did not invent the phrase. The earliest known use of the euphemism "the beast with two backs" comes from "Gargantua and Pantagruel" which was written in 1532 by Francois Rabelais who called it "the two-backed beast".
