Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This inspirational person said that "the only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision".

Answer: Helen Keller

After a childhood illness (probably scarlet fever or meningitis) Helen was left blind and deaf. Through the help of the 'miracle worker' Anne Sullivan, Helen came to communicate through touch, and eventually became a prolific author, speaker and campaigner for several issues such as women's suffrage.
2. This person is thought to have died after an arrow was shot into their eye.

Answer: Harold Godwinson

The image of Harold Godwinson with an arrow through the eye is famously seen on the Bayeux Tapestry under the words "Harold Rex Interfectus Est", meaning "Harold the King was killed". There remains speculation over whether this unfortunate figure is actually Harold, or whether Harold is the person next to this, being trampled by a horse.
3. This person discovered many comets through telescopic observations.

Answer: Caroline Herschel

Caroline Herschel made many of her observations from her home in Bath, England, using telescopes that were made by her astronomer brother William. King George III paid her the small sum of £50 a year for her work, making her the first woman in England to be honoured with an official government position.
4. This person is credited with designing the building called the 'Panopticon'.

Answer: Jeremy Bentham

Rather than being a single building, the Panopticon is a style of building that is common in prisons. The name refers to how the building's design allows a single officer to see all corridors of the prison (on any one floor) from their view point in a central posiion, giving them greater control over the inmates.
5. This person created a famous piece of music with no words or sound.

Answer: John Cage

John Cage's '4'33' is often described as a silent piece of music, as it consists of an assembly of musicians who are instructed to not play their instruments. This 1952 work is arguably one of the most influential pieces that paved the way for minimalist music, championed in the 60s by figures like Steve Reich and Philip Glass.
6. This person invented the first electrical hearing aid.

Answer: Miller Reese Hutchison

Hutchison called his device the 'Akouphone'. Created in 1898, the Akouphone used a carbon transmitter to amplify sounds that would otherwise be only weakly detected. Hutchison later promoted his invention by using it to help European royals, some of whom suffered from hereditary hearing impairments.
7. This person is the author of 'The Eye of the World'.

Answer: Robert Jordan

'The Eye of the World' is part of 'The Wheel of Time' series of fantasy novels by Robert Jordan. Jordan died whilst writing the final book of the series, but his extensive notes allowed the book to be completed as three separate volumes by the fantasy author Brandon Sanderson.
8. This person broke the sound barrier whilst flying in a Canadair F-86 Sabre in 1953.

Answer: Jacqueline Cochran

Cochran travelled at an average speed of 652 mph in the Sabre Jet on May 18, 1953, thus becoming the first woman to break the sound barrier. She was reportedly encouraged to do this by Chuck Yeager, who became the first man to break the sound barrier six years previously.
9. This person directed the controversial documentary film 'The Look of Silence'.

Answer: Joshua Oppenheimer

'The Look of Silence' follows a man who confronts those who killed his brother, as well as many others, during the Indonesian mass killings of the mid-1960s. It is a sister film of 'The Act of Killing' which interviews the perpetrators of these killings and, disturbingly, asks them to re-create their crimes for a Hollywood-style film.
10. This person said that "We can only see a short distance ahead, but we can see plenty there that needs to be done".

Answer: Alan Turing

This quote seems very apt from Turing, who is famed for his contribution to computer technology. It's a striking truth that a person synonymous with the technological age is also a person who in his own recent lifetime was subject to punishment for his sexuality.

After being forced to take chemical castration treatment, Turing eventually killed himself. Turing is commemorated in Manchester, England, in the name of a university building focused on the study of mathematics, and by a statue located next to the Gay Village.
