Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the dynasty that has reigned in Belgium since its independence in 1831?

Answer: Saxe-Coburg-Gotha

It was an obscure prince form Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Leopold, who got the new European throne. At the time he did not have any connection with Belgium whatsoever. But that was considered irrelevant.
2. A daughter of King Leopold I, Princess Charlotte, married Archduke Maximilian of Austria. In 1864 they became emperor and empress of which country?

Answer: Mexico

The French emperor Napoleon III wanted Mexico to pay its debts to him. His troops took over power and installed Maximilian and Charlotte. Mexico was far away however, so they were overthrown after two years. The emperor was shot and the empress had fled back to Europe before. She lived for sixty more years and died insane in 1927.
3. There were more marriages between the Belgians and the Austrians. The second king, Leopold II, married Archduchess Marie Henriette. How many children did they have?

Answer: one son, three daughters

The son, Prince Leopold, died at the age of ten. The daughters were Louisa, Stephanie and Clementina. As at the time, no women were allowed on the throne, none of the four children could succeed King Leopold II.
4. King Leopold II managed to get a private colony in Congo. For what main reason did the Belgian State take over the colony in 1908?

Answer: international protests against forced labour in the colony

There was an international (esp. British) campaign against excesses, caused by the system of forced labour, introduced by the King to make his colony as profitable as possible.
5. King Leopold II was succeeded in 1909 by King Albert I. What was Albert's relationship to the deceased king?

Answer: nephew

Albert I was the son of Leopold's younger brother Prince Philip, Count of Flanders.
6. King Albert was married to the Bavarian duchess Elizabeth (1876-1965). In her old age she got a nickname. What was it?

Answer: the Red Queen

It was the Red Queen, as in the height of the Cold War she visited countries like the Soviet Union and the Peoples' Republic of China. By the way, Queen Elizabeth is also famous for the Queen Elizabeth Piano Concours, which is still being held. Stella Artois is a Belgian beer brand.
7. In what tragic way did King Albert I die in 1934?

Answer: he fell while climbing a rock in the Ardennes

He was alone at the time and he was found at least nine hours after the accident.
8. The fourth king was Albert's son King Leopold III. What was the name of the beautiful Swedish princess he had married?

Answer: Astrid

Queen Astrid (1905-1935) died already one year later in a car accident in Switzerland. She left behind her husband with three children.
9. During the war King Leopold got into German custody. After the war he was not allowed to return in his pre-war position for two main reasons: one was that he had shaken hands with Adolf Hitler. What was the other?

Answer: he had married a Belgian commoner

Though his behaviour towards occupying Germany was, of course, the main reason, the Belgians did not accept the fact that the king had "betrayed" the memory of the deceased Queen Astrid by marrying Liliane Baels and making her Princess of Réthy.
10. As King Leopold III was not allowed to return after the war, his younger brother was made regent for the time being. What was his name?

Answer: Prince Charles (Karel)

Prince Charles (1903-1983) reigned from 1944 until 1950.
11. After a referendum king Leopold decided to leave the throne to his 20-year-old son Baudoin. What was his nickname?

Answer: Le Roi Triste (the Sad King)

King Baudoin was extremely pious and rarely laughed in public.
12. King Baudoin married the Spanish Fabiola de Mora y Aragon. How many children did they have?

Answer: zero

Despite some pregnancies and many visits to His Holiness the Pope, they did not have children.
13. King Baudoin's older sister, Joséphine Charlotte, married which other European monarch?

Answer: Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg

So the sovereigns of Belgium and Luxembourg were brothers-in-law.
14. King Baudoin died unexpectedly in 1993. In which country did he die?

Answer: Spain

He died while on holiday in Spain.
15. The sixth king of Belgium is Baudoins younger brother Albert II, married to Queen Paola. They have three children: Philip, Astrid and ...

Answer: Laurent

Prince Laurent was a prince of many scandals until he married in 2003, at the age of 40, with Claire Coombs.
