Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Wright brothers were the first to fly an airplane. What were their names?

Answer: Wilbur and Orville

Their first patent was for a system to control a "flying-machine."

The Wrights used a system known as wing warping, which used internal pulleys and cables to change the shape of the wing by twisting. Ailerons (hinged wing sections) quickly replaced wing warping, as they allowed for a more rigid wing, which provided more control and less failures. However, the Wright brothers patent was so broad that any control system, including ailerons, were covered.
2. Jacob and Wilhelm are best known for their work collecting and writing folktales. What was their last name?

Answer: Grimm

Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859) also had a younger brother, Ludwig Emil (1790-1863) who was an artist. Ludwig illustrated some editions of his brother's work.

In 1812, the Brothers Grimm published their first collection of stories, "Kinder- und Hausmärchen" ("Children's and Household Tales"), containing 86 stories. The collection was edited and republished many times, and in 1857 contained 211 stories. The stories were also revised, removing sexual references, for example. Despite the title, the first stories were not appropriate for children!

They are also famous for starting work on a major German dictionary in 1838. The first volume appeared in 1854 and the final volume in 1961!
3. In 1833, Elisha, Daniel, Edward, and John inherited their father's clothing company, famous for selling "ready-made" (off the rack) suits in America. In 1850 they renamed the company to this.

Answer: Brooks Brothers

Brooks Brothers has provided suits for 39 of the first 44 American presidents. The only presidents that did not wear Brooks Brothers were George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan.
4. Brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice are better known as what musical group, famous for the soundtrack of "Saturday Night Fever"?

Answer: The Bee Gees

The group was originally called the BG's by radio personality Bill Gates, who was introduced to the group by Bill Goode, before becoming the Bee Gees. The "BG"s come from the repeated initials B. G. (Barry Gibb, Bill Gates, and Bill Goode), and not from "Brothers Gibb."
5. "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" was an Emmy Award winning variety show on CBS. It used comedy to take on subjects such as President Lyndon Johnson and the Vietnam War, which led to problems at the network the show's cancellation. What were the names of the Smothers Brothers?

Answer: Tom and Dick

The brothers' act included both comedy and folk music, with Tom on guitar and Dick on upright bass. Tom also performed as "Yo-Yo Man" while Dick narrated the tricks. "Yo-Yo Man" was the opening act on the 2008 Smothers Brothers tour.

The brothers continued to tour and work in movies and television, including a few revivals of their variety show such as the 1988-1989 version. In 2010 they officially announced their retirement from touring after 51 years as a comedy act.
6. Sons of actor Lloyd Bridges, both of these brothers became actors. They even played brothers on screen, in "The Fabulous Baker Boys" (1989). Who are they?

Answer: Beau and Jeff

The real name of Beau Bridges is Lloyd Vernet Bridges III. To date, he has won 3 Emmy Awards, 2 Golden Globe Awards, and a Grammy Award. The Grammy Award was for the 2009 audiobook of "An Inconvenient Truth" by Al Gore. Bridges was one of three narrators of the book, along with fellow actors Cynthia Nixon and Blair Underwood.

In 1998, Jeff Bridges starred as "The Dude" in the Coen brothers film "The Big Lebowski". He won both the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his role as Otis "Bad" Blake in "Crazy Heart", 2009.
7. Brothers Horace and John had a machine shop in Detroit where they made auto parts for the Olds Motor Vehicle Company and the Ford Motor Company before making their own cars. What was their name?

Answer: Dodge

In 1920, both Dodge brothers died (John in January, of pneumonia and Horace in December of cirrhosis). Their widows sold the company in 1925 to an investment company, which in turn sold the company to Chrysler in 1928.

In 1984, Dodge introduced the Dodge Caravan, which helped introduce the term "minivan" and that type of vehicle to the US.
8. Sons of NFL quarterback Archie, brothers Peyton and Eli also became quarterbacks. Peyton won Superbowl XLI with the Indianapolis Colts. Eli won Superbowls XLII and XLVI with the New York Giants. What is their last name?

Answer: Manning

Peyton and Eli have an older brother, Cooper, who was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, ending his football career.

Peyton Manning missed the 2011 NFL season due to neck surgeries, and in 2012 was released by the Colts, signing with the Denver Broncos a few weeks later.
9. Before their gender transitions, Lana and her sister Lilly made films such as "The Matrix" trilogy and "Speed Racer" under what professional name?

Answer: The Wachowski Brothers

Lana and Lilly now bill themselves as simply "the Wachowskis", or, not-so-simply, "the Wachowski Starship."

While primarily working in films, they co-created the television show "Sense8" with J. Michael Straczynski. That series premiered in 2015 on Netflix.
10. "Love and Rockets" is an alternative comic created by which cartoonist brothers?

Answer: Los Bros Hernandez

Gilbert, Jaime, and Mario Hernandez first self-published "Love and Rockets" in 1981, before moving to Fantagraphics the next year.

Gilbert and Jaime are the main forces behind "L&R." However, each normally works separately on their individual storylines and characters.
