Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'EUS', which one, according to Mark 2:14, was the father of Levi/Matthew?

Answer: Alphaeus

Alphaeus was the father of Matthew, also known as Levi, as per Mark 2:14. The verse tells of Matthew/Levi sitting at his tax office and when Jesus saw him, He told him to "follow Me." The verse indicates Matthew arose and followed Jesus without any hesitation. Matthew is the writer of the Gospel of Matthew, the first book in the New Testament.

Apart from Mark 2:14, there is no further mention of Matthew's father. It must be pointed out there is a second man called Alphaeus in the New Testament, but we'll save the details for a future question in this quiz.
2. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'EUS', which one, according to Mark 10:46-47, was a blind man who called Jesus "Son of David"?

Answer: Bartimaeus

Bartimaeus was a blind beggar at Jericho who referred to Jesus as "Son of David". Christians believe 'Son of David' is a Messianic title for Jesus. By calling Jesus 'Son of David', Bartimaeus was acknowledging Him as the Messiah.

Shortly after his encounter with Jesus, Bartimaeus would be miraculously cured of his blindness. Scripture tells of Bartimaeus following Jesus along the road after he was able to see.

For details, see Mark 10:46-52.
3. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'EUS', which one, according to 2 Timothy 2:17, was called a false teacher by Paul?

Answer: Hymenaeus

Hymenaeus apparently caused Paul considerable concern because of his false teaching, but little in the way of details are given. In 2 Timothy 2:17, Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, condemns Hymenaeus as well as Philetus, telling Timothy to have nothing to do with the men because "their message will spread like cancer."

In 1 Timothy 1:20, Paul writes he had to take drastic action and delivered Hymenaeus, as well as another man called Alexander, to Satan so "they may learn not to blaspheme."
4. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'EUS', which one, according to Romans 16:15, was a member of the early church at Rome?

Answer: Nereus

Nereus was a member of the early church at Rome, as per Romans 16:15. However, little is known about Nereus as he is mentioned in passing reference and nowhere else in the Bible. In Romans 16:15, Paul states, "Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints who are with them."

A number of other names of common people who were members of the early church are also mentioned in the 16th chapter of Romans.
5. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'EUS', which one, according to Mark 10:46, was the father of Bartimaeus?

Answer: Timaeus

Timaeus was the father of Bartimaeus, a blind man who begged along the road at Jericho, as per Mark 10:46. However, little is known about Timaeus as he is mention in passing reference with his name appearing only once in Scripture. Jesus miraculously healed Bartimaeus of his blindness, with details appearing in Mark 10:46-52.
6. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'EUS', which one, according to Luke 19:8, told Jesus he would give half of his goods to the poor and if he had taken anything from anyone by false accusation, he would restore fourfold?

Answer: Zacchaeus

Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector of Jericho, is the correct answer. Scripture tells of Jesus encountering Zacchaeus after he had climbed up a sycamore tree to get a better look at Him as he passed through town.

In Biblical days, tax collectors were ostracized by the people because they were traitors, working for the Romans. What's more, they were regarded as complete crooks. It was common practice for the tax collectors to demand more money from the people than the Roman government charged, with the difference being pocketed.

Luke 19:1-10 tells of Jesus announcing He would be spending the night at Zacchaeus' house with the people complaining He would be staying with a "sinner".

In Verse 8, Zacchaeus proclaims he would make amends for his transgressions, stating: "Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold."

In response, Jesus states: "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."
7. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'EUS', which one is the name used for Timothy in the KJV Bible?

Answer: Timotheus

In the KJV, Timothy is known as Timotheus. Some other versions on the Bible also use the name Timotheus but the vast majority of the more modern versions use Timothy.

Timothy was a young and timid worker in the early church who labored alongside Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. It's apparent the two had a special relationship as Paul refers to Timothy as his son in Scripture.
8. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'EUS', which one, according to Matthew 10:3 in the NKJV, is a name given for one of the original Twelve Disciples?

Answer: Lebbaeus

The correct answer, as per Matthew 10:3 in the NKJV, is Lebbaeus. (In the same verse in the NIV he is identified as Thaddaeus.) Although he was a member of the original Twelve Disciples, little is known about the man as he went by different names depending on the Bible translation. The names include Jude, Judas, Thaddeus and Thaddaeus. (It must be stressed the name Judas is not the same man known as Judas Iscariot.)

According to different Websites, some people believe two or more people are represented by the names. However, the consensus of most theologians is the different names all refer to the same person.
9. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'EUS', which one, according to Matthew 10:3 in the NKJV, was the surname for Lebbaeus?

Answer: Thaddaeus

According to Matthew 10:3, Thaddaeus was the surname of the disciple referred to in the verse in the NKJV as Lebbaeus. As stated in the answer section of Question No. 8, there is debate as to who Lebbaeus actually was.

The consensus, however, is that the name refers to the disciple usually known as Jude or Judas. It must be pointed out the name Judas is not the same disciple who betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver.

For the record, Matthew 10:2-4 in the NKJV records the names of the original Twelve Disciples this way: "Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him."
10. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'EUS', which one, according to Matthew 10:3, was the father of James the Lesser, one of the original Twelve Disciples?

Answer: Alphaeus

Alphaeus was the father of the disciple known as James the Lesser, as per Matthew 10:3. James is called the Lesser to differentiate himself from the other disciple called James, who was the brother of John.

In addition to Matthew 10:3, Alphaeus is identified as the father of James in Mark 3:18, Luke 6:15 and Acts 1:3. However, little is known about Alphaeus as he is mentioned in passing reference.

Making things a bit confusing, another man is called Alphaeus in the New Testament and he too was a father of one of the Twelve Disciples. The second man called Alphaeus was the father of Matthew who is also known as Levi, as per Mark 2:14.
