Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does John refer to himself as in verse 1 (NIV)?

Answer: The elder

He refers to himself as "the elder" in 1st, 2nd and 3rd John. He refers to himself as "the disciple Jesus loved" in the gospel he wrote. John says that readers should walk in the light in his first epistle. Paul calls himself a "teacher of the true faith" in 1 Timothy 2:7.
2. Who is 3rd John addressed to?

Answer: Gaius

The letter is addressed to Gaius "whom I love in the truth". The name Gaius is mentioned four other times in the Bible. The name is mentioned twice in Acts, both times as a companion of Paul. Then he is mentioned as a founder of the church in Corinth.

The last time he is mentioned, other than in the book of 3rd John, is in the final greetings in Romans 16. Nobody knows if any two of them are the same person.
3. John says he has no greater joy than what (NIV)?

Answer: To hear that his children are walking in the truth

This is found in verse four. In verses 2-4 he is telling Gaius that he has great joy when people bring good reports about people and their faith. He then says in verse 4 that he has no greater joy than to hear that his children are walking in the truth.
4. True or false: John says that Diotrephes is a great worker in the church in Ephesus.

Answer: False

John says that he has tried to communicate with the church Diotrephes is working with. But he says that Diotrephes loves to be first and he won't have anything to do with them. He then says that, when he next goes to that church, he will call attention to this problem.
5. What does John say Diotrephes refuses to do?

Answer: Welcome the brothers

He says that Diotrephes will have nothing to do with them and even refuses to welcome the brothers. John says that he even throws those who try to welcome them out of his church.
6. How many verses make up the one chapter found in 3rd John (NIV)?

Answer: 14

At 14 verses, 3rd John is the second smallest book in the Bible, with 2nd John being smaller by only 1 verse. John writes only a small letter saying that he has a lot to say but he hopes to see Gaius face to face soon. That can be found in verses 13 and 14. 3rd John is one of only five books in the Bible that are only one chapter long. The others are Obadiah, Philemon, 2nd John and Jude.
7. What does John say not to imitate in verse 11 (NIV)?

Answer: What is evil

He tells Gaius not to imitate what is evil but what is good. He then says that whoever does what is good is from God. He goes on to say that whoever does what is evil has not seen God.
8. Who does John say his readers ought to show hospitality to (NIV)?

Answer: Those who preach to pagans

John says that the brothers set out to tell others about Christ while receiving no help from the pagans. He then says that all Christians should support them in their work. This can be found in verses 7 and 8. (Some translations use the word gentiles rather than pagans.)
9. Who does John say is well spoken of in verse 12?

Answer: Demetrius

John says that even the truth speaks well of Demetrius. He says that he speaks well of him and assures Gaius that his testimony is true. He says all of this just after he has finished saying that whoever does what is good is from God but whoever does evil has not seen God in verse 11.
10. What is the last thing John says to do in the final greetings of the book?

Answer: Greet the friends by name

In verse 14 John says that he hopes to see Gaius soon so that they can talk face to face. He then says that the friends there send their greetings. Then the last instruction he gives is to greet the friends there by name.
