Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Caleb was one of the twelve spies sent by Moses to spy out the land of Canaan. Because he brought back a good report, God, through Moses, promised him land in Canaan. How many years later did this promise come into effect?

Answer: 45

Caleb was forty years old when Moses sent him and the other eleven spies to spy out the land of Canaan. Forty-five years later, Caleb reminded Joshua of this promise and he was given Hebron as his inheritance. The full account can be found in Joshua 14:6-12.

2. Which of the following is not one of the "Fruit of the Spirit" listed in Galatians 5:22-23?

Answer: Wrath

In Galatians 5 both the "works of the flesh" and the "Fruit of the Spirit" are listed. The list of the "Fruit of the Spirit" from Galatians 5:22-23 are love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and lastly, self-control.

These are in stark contrast to the "works of the flesh" which include adultery, idolatry and hatred to name just a few. (Quotation taken from the New King James version of the Bible.)

3. Matthew 6:33 says to seek what first?

Answer: God's kingdom and righteousness

Before Matthew became a disciple he was a tax collector, a profession despised by most people. When Jesus said, "Follow Me," Matthew immediately left behind his old life to become a follower of Jesus (Matthew 9:9-13).

4. Which one of these miracles is only mentioned in the gospel of John and not in any of the other gospels?

Answer: Lazarus' resurrection

Lazarus' resurrection is found only in John 11. After finding out that Lazarus is ill, Jesus delays his trip to Bethany where Lazarus and his sisters live. Upon his arrival at Bethany he is told by Lazarus' sisters that Lazarus died four days ago. Jesus orders the stone removed from the door of the tomb and calls forth Lazarus. Lazarus walks out of the tomb still wrapped in the death clothes.

Wrong answers:
Jesus calming the storm is found in Matthew 8, Mark 4 and Luke 8.
The feeding of the five thousand is found Matthew 14, Mark 6, Luke 9 and John 6.
Jesus walking on the water is found in Mark 6, Matthew 14 and John 6.

5. What was the miracle that Jesus performed in the town of Nain?

Answer: He raised a man from the dead

As Jesus and his disciples (and the usual large crowd which seemed to follow him everywhere!) were going into Nain they met a funeral procession. The dead person was a young man, the only son of a widow. Her son's death would have been doubly devastating for the mother. Not only had she lost the son that she loved but she had also lost her only means of provision. The future must have looked very bleak indeed! Jesus' heart immediately went out to her and he knew what he had to do. He stopped the funeral procession in its tracks and commanded the dead man to get up. Straight away the young man sat up in the coffin and began to talk! Jesus then reunited him with his mother. Everyone round about was filled with awe and the news about what Jesus had done spread around the area. (See Luke 7:11-17)

Jesus also performed the miracles mentioned in the wrong answers, just not in Nain. There are several accounts of him healing blind men. One example is Bartimaeus in Mark 10:46-52. This happened in Jericho.

There are two accounts of Jesus casting demons out of a mute man. In Matthew 12:22 the man was both blind and mute, and there is another occasion recorded in Luke 11:14 where the man was just mute.

The account of the ten men healed of leprosy is in Luke 17:11-19.

6. In Isaiah 43, which of these countries does God NOT say that He has given in exchange for His people?

Answer: Babylon

Isaiah 43:3. This passage shows God's great love for His people, even though they are rebellious. He promises that although they may pass through hard times, they will never be totally defeated. Indeed this is true of the Jewish people, that though they have been persecuted throughout history, they have never been eradicated.

Many Christians, including me, have taken comfort from this passage in difficult times with its assurance of God's care and protection.

Babylon is mentioned later in this chapter (verse 14) when there is a prediction of the Israelites' coming exile there.

7. What did Jeremiah do with the words of the Lord in Jeremiah 15:16?

Answer: Eat them

"Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts." (Jeremiah 15:16 King James version).

8. Fill in the blank from Genesis 3:15 (NIV): "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers, he will _________, and you will strike his heel."

Answer: Crush your head

This was part of the curse from God after the serpent (Satan in the form of a serpent) tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. She did eat it and gave some to Adam. They then tried to hide from God but couldn't...and there began the first blame game recorded in the Bible.

9. In both Matthew and Luke Jesus restored the sight of a blind man. Both accounts revolved around a certain location. What location was it?

Answer: Jericho

These accounts may not be about the same healing as the Bible says "a certain man" in the Gospel of Luke and it appeared Jesus was entering the city ("come nigh (near)"). In the account in Matthew, Jesus was departing from the city. (Luke 18:35, Matthew 20:29)

10. I argued with my brothers and saved our younger brother's life. Instead of killing him I talked them into tossing him into a cistern that was dry. My thoughts were to later get him out and return him to our father. My mistake was leaving them alone because by the time I returned for Joseph, my other brothers had already sold him to a band of Ishmaelites. Who am I?

Answer: Reuben

Even though Reuben showed fear for what happened with Joseph he still went along with the lie that was told to their father Jacob. They killed a goat, used its blood to stain Joseph's coat and then presented it to Jacob, letting him think that an animal had killed Joseph. (Genesis 37:12-36)
