Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Luke 19: 1-9 tells of Zaccheaus, a chief tax collector, climbing up a sycamore-fig tree to get a better view of Jesus passing by. In what community did Zaccheaus see Jesus and ended up having him stay in his house overnight?

Answer: Jericho

Jericho is the same community in which Jesus healed blind Bartimaeus. In the passage in Luke, Jesus tells Zaccheaus to come down from the tree and that he wants to stay at his house that night. When the people heard this, they were amazed because tax collectors were despised in Jewish society during Biblical times.

They were seen as traitors working for the Romans and most people accused the tax collectors of over charging citizens and keeping a percentage for themselves. Jericho is just north of the Dead Sea and is near the Jordan River and, at 846 feet below sea level, is one of the lowest permanently inhabited communities in the world.
2. The death of Lazarus and his being raised from the dead by Jesus is told in John 11: 1-44. In which community did this miraculous event take place?

Answer: Bethany

Bethany, the location of Lazarus' community is given in verse 1. In verses 25 and 26 Jesus makes one his most famous declarations: "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die." In Biblical days, Bethany was a village just outside Jerusalem.
3. The apostle Paul was once a vehement opponent of Christianity, but ended up becoming a dominant force for the spread of the new religion. In what community was he from? (Acts 22: 3)

Answer: Tarsus

In much of the 22nd chapter of Acts, Paul tells of his life before he became a Christian and after he encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus. Tarsus is in present day south-central Turkey.
4. Acts 16: 24-38 tells of Paul and Silas being put in prison for preaching Christianity. In what community were they imprisoned? (Acts 16: 12)

Answer: Philippi

Scripture says Paul and Silas were stripped and beaten and then severely flogged. Despite all this, the two were praying and singing hymns at midnight when a violent earthquake struck, opening the doors to the prison. The passage goes on to state the jailer took Paul and Silas home and was filled with great joy because he and his household had come to believe in God. Philippi was a city in eastern Macedonia and was abandoned in the 14th century during the Ottoman conquest.
5. Acts 9: 25 tells of the apostle Paul escaping from a city by being let down in a basket through an opening in the town wall. What's the name of city?

Answer: Damascus

Paul was forced to flee Damascus after Jews living there were incensed with him for preaching the message Jesus is the Son of God. This from the same man who had spent much of his life persecuting followers of Christ. Damascus is in the south-west of modern day Syria.
6. Revelation 1: 9 tells us where John was when he wrote the last book of the New Testament while in exile. Where was he?

Answer: Patmos

Verse 9 states: "I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus." What follows this verse is Scripture that has captivated and perplexed Christians for centuries. Patmos is in the Aegean Sea and is part of Greece.
7. Acts 16: 1-3 tells of Paul meeting up with Timothy in a community in what is modern day Turkey. What is the name of the community?

Answer: Lystra

Verse 2 says the brothers all spoke well of Timothy so Paul opted to take him on a missionary journey. Verses 4 and 5 go on to state: "As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey. So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers."
8. The book of Philemon is a letter written by the apostle Paul on behalf of Omnesimus, a runaway slave. In what community did Philemon live?

Answer: Colosse

Theologians believe Paul wrote the book during his first imprisonment in Rome to Philemon, whose house was used as a meeting place for early Christians. Colossians 4: 7-9 also makes mention of Omnesimus, "our faithful and dear brother, who is one of you." Colosse was a community in what is present day Turkey.
9. First and Second Thessalonians is addressed to believers who lived in Thessalonica. In what modern-day country would you find the city formerly known as Thessalonica?

Answer: Greece

The city is known today as Thessaloniki. It is Greece's second largest city and is a major transportation hub for the Balkan peninsula.
10. Acts 17: 10-12 tells of people who lived in a city who were of noble character and received Paul's message of a resurrected Jesus with great eagerness. On top of this, they examined the Scriptures every day to see what Paul said was true. Where were they based?

Answer: Berea

Verse 12, in the NIV Bible, states "many of the Jews believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men." Berea was just west of Thessalonica. Today the Greek community is known as Veria.
