Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After God removed Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, Scripture states He placed something at the east side of the garden to prevent re-entry. What, according to the KJV, NKJV and NIV, did God place at the east side of the Garden of Eden? (Genesis 3:24)

Answer: Cherubim and a flaming sword

According to Genesis 3:24, God placed placed cherubim at the east of the Garden of Eden "and a flaming sword which turned every way" to guard the way to the tree of life. The action was taken after Eve and her husband Adam both ate forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, or the tree of life.
2. What man, after pitching his tent at a mountain east of Bethel, constructed an altar and called on the name of the LORD, as per Genesis 12:7-8?

Answer: Abram

Abraham, who was known as Abram at the time, is the correct answer. Genesis 12:7-8 tells of Abram moving to a mountain east of Bethel where he "built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD."

Earlier in Chapter 12, there is an account of the LORD appearing before Abraham and proclaiming He would bless him and make him the father of a great nation.
3. Genesis 13:8-12 tells of Abraham and Lot agreeing to go their separate ways with one of them heading east for the plain of Jordan. Which one headed east?

Answer: Lot

Lot is the one who opted to head east with his family and livestock. Abraham, who was known as Abram at the time, decided he and Lot should go their separate ways as there was apparently friction between the two camps. Genesis 13:8-12 tells of Lot agreeing with Abraham's decision and opting to move east to the plain of Jordan as it was well watered. Abraham in turn dwelt in the land of Canaan.
4. Who had a dream in which there were seven heads of grain "withered, thin, and blighted by the east wind"?

Answer: The Pharaoh

According to Genesis 41, the Pharaoh had two dreams and both of them were interpreted by Joseph. In the first dream, the Pharaoh saw seven fine looking cows and seven gaunt cows while in the second dream he saw seven plump heads of grain and seven thin heads of grain "blighted by the east wind."

Joseph explained to the Pharaoh his dreams meant Egypt would experience seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine. The Pharaoh was so impressed with Joseph's interpretation he made him the second most powerful man in Egypt.
5. Exodus 10:13 tells of Moses stretching out his rod and an east wind brought about an eighth plague upon Egypt. What was the eighth plague, that was brought about by an east wind?

Answer: Plague of Locusts

When Moses stretched out his rod, Exodus 10:13 in the NKJV states the LORD "brought an east wind on the land all that day and all that night" and when it was morning Egypt was inundated with locusts. In fact, the plague of locusts was so severe, Exodus 10:15 states, "the land was darkened" and the insects "ate every herb of the land and all the fruit of the trees."

Ten plagues were unleashed on Egypt to convince the Pharaoh to grant permission to the Israelites to leave the country and head to Canaan, known as the Promised Land.
6. What three tribes received land east of the Jordan when the Israelites occupied Canaan, as per Joshua 13:8-33?

Answer: Reuben, Gad and Manasseh

The three tribes that received land east of the Jordan River were Reuben, Gad and Manaasseh. Land given to the nine other tribes was on the other side of the Jordan, or the west side. Details about land distributed to the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Manasseh appear in Johsua 13:8-33.

The Israelites moved into Canaann, known as the Promised Land, forty years after they staged a mass exodus out of Egypt.
7. Judges 21 tells of the daughters of Shiloh holding a yearly feast on the east side of the highway that runs from Bethel to Shechem. What happened to the daughters of Shiloh?

Answer: They were taken captive and given as wives to the Benjamites.

The account of the daughters of Shiloh holding a yearly feast on the east side of the highway that runs from Bethel to Shechem is one of a number of bizarre accounts in the Old Testament. The daughters were all taken captive and given to the Benjamites as wives, as per Judges 21.

As documented in Judges 20, Israel was involved in a bloody civil war pitting the Benjamites against the eleven other tribes. The Benjamites were severely defeated in the battle and there was even a fear the tribe could be on the brink of extinction. As a result, it was decided to take captive the daughters of Shiloh and give them as wives to the Benjamites.

Judges 21:19 in the NKJV states the daughters were holding a yearly feast "on the east side of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah." Scripture goes on to tell of the Benjamites waiting in the vineyards and capturing the women as they prepared to perform their dances.

According to the passage, Shiloh was north of Bethel.
8. According to 2 Kings 13:17, what prophet instructed King Joash to shoot an arrow out of an east window to determine if Israel would be successful in battle against the Syria?

Answer: Elisha

Elisha is the correct answer. 2 Kings 13:17 in the NKJV states that Elisha instructed King Joash to open "the east window" and to shoot an arrow. It was all part of Elisha's way of determining if the Israelites would be successful in battle against the Syrians. Scripture goes on to tell of Elisha instructing Joash to strike the Syrians at Aphek "till you have destroyed them."

Shortly after this event, Elisha died.
9. Psalm 103:12 is one of my favorite Bible verses. In the NKJV, it reads this way: "As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us." Who is credited with writing Psalm 103?

Answer: David

Psalm 103 was written by David, the noted king of Israel. Out of one hundred and fifty Psalms in the Book of Psalms, David is credited with writing more than seventy of them.

To put the verse in context, here's how Psalm 103:11-13 reads in the NKJV:
"For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. As a father pities his children, so the LORD pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust."
10. New Testament Scripture tells of wise men coming from the east to worship baby Jesus but nowhere does it mention there were three of them.

Answer: True

True. No where in Scripture does it mention the number of wise men who came to worship baby Jesus. However, the fact that three gifts were presented -- gold, frankincense, and myrrh -- suggests there were three wise men.

Tradition holds the wise men were Balthasar, Melchior and Gaspar. Meanwhile, Biblical details pertaining to the wise men can be found in Matthew 2:1-18.
