Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To whom did Jesus ask these questions? "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?"

Answer: The original Twelve Disciples

Jesus asked the questions of the Twelve Disciples, as per Matthew 16:26. To put the verse in context, here's how Matthew 16:24-26 reads in the NKJV: "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?"

Jesus made the famous statement just after telling His disciples He would be killed and raised from the dead on the third day.
2. To whom did Jesus ask this question? "What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Answer: Peter

Peter is the correct answer. Jesus asked the question after He had been fervently praying prior to His arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane and when He returned to the disciples Peter, James and John He found them sleeping. Scripture goes on to tell of Jesus going to pray again, and then returning to find the disciples asleep once again.

A few minutes later, Jesus would be arrested, put on trial and then humiliated and tortured before being crucified. Three days later, however, Christ would rise from the dead, just like He had predicted.

For details about His praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, see Matthew 26:36-46.
3. To whom did Jesus ask this question? "Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times."

Answer: Peter

Peter, of course, is the correct answer, as per John 13:38. Jesus asked the question immediately after Peter boldly proclaimed he would lay down his life for Christ's sake. In His response, Christ accurately predicted Peter would go on to deny Him three times and then a rooster would crow. The conversation took place at the Last Supper, just prior to Christ's crucifixion.
4. To whom did Jesus ask this question? "Why do you test Me, you hypocrites? Show Me the tax money."

Answer: The Pharisees

Jesus asked the question of the Pharisees, as per Matthew 22:19. Scripture tells of the Pharisees attempting to "entangle" Jesus in His teachings by asking Him if it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar. Their thinking was apparently based on the fact that, if Jesus said it was unlawful to pay taxes to Caesar, the Romans would arrest Him. If He strongly recommended paying taxes to the Romans, His stand would be seen as being anti-Jewish and the people would be upset with Him.

However, perceiving the wickedness of the Pharisees, Jesus asked them to show Him tax money and they brought Him a denarius.

When Jesus asked them whose image was on the coin, they replied it was Caesar's. Then He told them: "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

The passage goes on to state when they heard Christ's response, they "marveled" and went their way.
5. To whom did Jesus ask this question? "Who touched Me?"

Answer: An unnamed woman with a bleeding problem

A woman who was cured of a bleeding problem after she secretly touched Jesus was asked the question, as per Luke 8:45. According to Scripture, Jesus was surrounded by a large number of people and the disciples were amazed He wanted to know who touched Him. In other words, the insinuation is He was touched and jostled by numerous people at the time. However, when the woman secretly touched Jesus, He felt power leave His body.

After Jesus asked the question, "Who touched Me?", the unnamed woman came forward confessing she was the one who secretly touched Him. Jesus is then quoted as telling her: "Daughter, be of good cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace."

For more details, see Luke 8:43-48.
6. To whom did Jesus ask this question? "Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?"

Answer: Peter

John 18:11 provides details of Jesus telling Peter in the Garden of Gethsemane to put his sword away and then posing the question, "Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?" Jesus asked the question as a detachment of troops, led by Judas Iscariot, came to arrest Him.

Scripture tells of Peter pulling his sword to defiantly oppose the mob and even severing the ear of Malchus, a servant of the high priest. When Jesus told Peter to put his sword away, he complied.

Scripture goes on to tell of Jesus being arrested, put on trial and then being crucified after He was humiliated and tortured. However, three days later He would triumphantly rise from the dead.
7. To whom did Jesus ask these questions? "Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?"

Answer: A Samaritan leper

Jesus asked the question of a Samaritan leper, as per Luke 17:17-18. The question was asked after the Samaritan leper was cleansed of leprosy by Jesus. Although nine other lepers were cleansed at the same time, only the Samaritan leper returned to give thanks, prompting Jesus to ask the questions.

For details about the mass cleansing, see Luke 17:11-19.
8. To whom did Jesus ask these questions? "Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Arise and walk'?

Answer: The scribes

Matthew 9:1-8, tells of Jesus asking the question of the scribes after they accused him of blasphemy for healing an unnamed paralytic man and forgiving his sins. After asking the question, Jesus stressed to the scribes "the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins."

After the paralytic was healed by Jesus, Scripture states the multitudes "marveled and glorified God, who had given such power to men."
9. To whom did Jesus ask this question? "Friend, why have you come?"

Answer: Judas Iscariot

When Judas Iscariot led "a great multitude with swords and clubs" to arrest Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, Christ had a poignant question for him: "Friend, why have you come?" Scripture does not provide details about Judas' answer to the question.

Scripture goes on to tell of the mob laying hands on Jesus and taking Him away, with all the disciples forsaking Him and fleeing. See Matthew 26:47-56 for details.

A short while later, Christ would be crucified only to miraculously arise from the dead three days later.
10. To whom did Jesus ask these questions? "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?"

Answer: Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene is the correct answer, as per John 20:15. According to Scripture, Mary had gone to Christ's tomb on the Sunday morning after His crucifixion and she was stunned to find His tomb empty. Scripture tells of a resurrected Jesus seeing Mary weeping and He asked her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?"

According to Scripture, Mary initially did not recognize Jesus, thinking she was talking to the gardener. A few moments later, Mary would be completely amazed when she realized it was indeed Jesus she was talking to.

See John 20:11-18 for details.
