Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This peninsula in Greece is steep and rocky. There are some twenty monasteries and thirteen sketes (smaller facilities) on the land. You may hear the place referred to as "Agion Oros," or the "Holy Mountain." What is it?

Answer: Mt. Athos

Mt. Athos is, strictly speaking, a peninsula, but it has been called by its present name for centuries. It is not only home to groups of Greek heritage. Monasteries for the Orthodox Churches of Russia, Serbia and Bulgaria are also found there.
2. Observant members of the Church are expected to do which of the following on Wednesdays and Fridays?

Answer: Keep a fast

In general, for the weekly fasts, one is to avoid meat, fish, dairy products, food prepared with olive oil, and alcohol. The regulations for fasting may be relaxed in cases of medical necessity.
3. If you visit a church, you may see something called Orthros. What is that?

Answer: A prayer service

Orthros is held prior to the Sunday liturgy. Common features include readings from the Psalms and Gospels, as well as a number of other hymns and prayers.
4. Which of the following would you generally see or hear people do at a service?

Answer: Sing 'a capella,' that is, without instrumental accompaniment

Most Orthodox churches don't use any musical instruments, other than singing. A few may have an organ.
5. Which of the following will you generally *not* see people do at a service?

Answer: Face west for the majority of the time

Orthodox worshippers stand and face the east during services. When the faithful enter the church, they may also light prayer candles, beeswax tapers.
6. On which of these holidays would you see something called the "blessing of the waters"?

Answer: Epiphany

Epiphany, also called Theophany, commemorates the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan. Thus, churches may hold a prayer service at a nearby river or lake.
7. Toward the end of a service, you may be handed something called the "antidoron." What is it?

Answer: Bread blessed by the priest, but not for use in Holy Communion

'Antidoron' means 'instead of the gift.' The bread is given out as a sign of fellowship. Only individuals who have been baptized into the Orthodox Church may receive Holy Communion; however, anyone is welcome to take some of the antidoron.
8. The Greek Orthodox Church recognizes "various ceremonies, words and symbolisms" to honor the grace of God in one's life. Just as do other churches, it calls these events sacraments. One of them is Confession. Where in the church building is this conducted?

Answer: Toward the front

It is common practice for the individual making Confession to stand next to an icon of Christ. (This is simply a reminder that it is God who grants forgiveness.) The priest stands at their side, to listen and then pray with them.
9. The archbishop of which city is considered the prelate of the Church of Greece?

Answer: Athens

The archbishop bears the honorific His Beatitude. About 98 percent of the population of Greece belongs to the Orthodox Church.
10. At Pascha (Easter), one may hear Orthodox people greet one another by saying, "Christ is risen!" What is the appropriate response?

Answer: Truly he is risen!

This greeting is exchanged until forty days later, at the feast of the Ascension. It may also be said at liturgical services.
