Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The broom, although a common symbol of witchcraft, is not used for flying. What is its most common usage in Wicca?

Answer: Sweeping away negative energy

Brooms are often used to sweep the circle area before you cast the circle, and are also part of many spring cleaning rituals to banish all negative energy from the house. They are also part of many hand-fasting ceremonies, where the couple jump the broom that was used to clean the area, symbolizing leaving all negativity behind them.
2. An athame is a knife used symbolically, not to cut anything physical, but to direct energy. In most forms of Wicca, what does an athame look like?

Answer: Double-edged with a black handle

The blade is often purposely dulled, and sometimes the point is rounded off to avoid accidents. Steel is commonly used for the blade, although some traditions swear by iron blades. It should be noted that if you work with faeries you should not use iron, as iron is in complete disharmony with Fae power.
3. The other main knife used in Wicca is the boline, which unlike the athame is used to cut things. Which of the following is the boline NEVER used for?

Answer: Sacrificing animals

No form of Wicca that I've ever heard of believes in animal sacrifice. All life is sacred to Wiccans. Although I have seen spells that require blood, this is always your own blood, or the freely given blood of another person.
4. Although the use of the bell is falling out a practice, it is still a tool used by some traditions. The bell is rung a different number of times depending on what it is being used for. What would a single bell ring commonly mean?

Answer: The beginning or end of a ritual

Although different traditions of Wicca sometimes use different numbers of rings for things, I've never heard of a single ring being used to do anything except start or end a ritual. I learned that three rings clears negative energy, five invokes the elements, seven calls the dead, and nine invokes the gods, although this is not universal.
5. Candles are probably the tools that vary most widely in what they can be used for. Many Wiccans use candles on their altars which correspond to the four directions. If I had a yellow candle for east, a blue one for west, and a red one for south, what color would my north candle be?

Answer: Green

Although several traditions, notably Irish Witta, use different colors, the four above are the most common in Wicca. Candles can also be used to represent the gods, to help link a spell to a person, to destroy evil, and a variety of other things. Care should always be taken when working with candles.
6. Although I've never seen a witch cackle over a cauldron with bubbling green stuff in it, many Wiccans use cauldrons to safely burn things. If it has four legs, they're said to represent the elements or the four major fire festivals. If it has three, what do they represent?

Answer: Maiden, Mother, and Crone

Depending on which mythology you follow, if any, you will have different goddesses representing the triple goddess, but the cauldron is always seen as a female power and therefor when it has three legs they are the goddesses.
7. Each of the four directions has a main symbol used to represent it in the Gardnerian Craft. What direction/element does the wand represent?

Answer: East/Air

Wands, like athames, are often used to direct energy. They can be as simple as a plain piece of wood, or can they be as elaborate as the witch wishes. Many people spend hours choosing the right stick, and many more hours crafting it into a wand.
8. Which two tools are the focus of the Great Rite in Wicca?

Answer: dagger and chalice

In Wicca, the Great Rite represents the joining of god and goddess, and their mating. The male lowers the dagger into the chalice being held by the woman, representing the act of sex. In the olden days, the actual act of sex was performed either in the circle or after it in a private place, but this is rarely done now.
9. The chalice is often used to represent the goddess, but can also be used as the symbol of one of the four directions. If used this way, on which side of my altar would I place the chalice?

Answer: West

The chalice often holds the holy water, and is therefore put in the west, the direction associated with water. If used to represent the goddess, it is usually near the center of the altar, or in the northwest corner, as north and west are the two feminine elements.
10. Of all the tools listed that Wiccans use, there are only three that are necessary to do magick.

Answer: False

There are actually none that are necessary. The tools are just that, tools. All the the magick comes from the witch herself. I've seen people do things through sheer will alone, with no tools, that were more impressive than what a coven could do with a hundred tools.

Thanks for playing this quiz, and if you want to debate any of the answers with me, please feel free. Wicca is a religion where not everyone does things the same way, or believes the same things, and I've tried to phrase the questions so that they fall in line with common beliefs, but if you have any disagreements or can think of any way to make the questions better please let me know. Thanks and blessed be.
