Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Jesus was being taken from the Garden of Gethsemane to go before Caiaphas, the high priest, one of the disciples was specifically mentioned to have followed him. Which one?

Answer: Peter

Peter followed the soldiers who led Jesus to be questioned at a distance. But he stopped in the courts, which is where he was asked about, and denied, knowing Jesus three times, just as Jesus had said he would. This can be found in Matthew 26:58.
2. According to Matthew, which of the following strategies did the chief priests and the Sanhedrin NOT try to use against Jesus during his trial before Caiaphas?

Answer: Quoting Scripture

They tried to find false evidence but couldn't find any, so they went with false witnesses in an attempt to condemn Jesus to death. When they had reason to condemn him they sent him to Pilate for further questioning. This can be found in Matthew 26:57-66.
3. Did Jesus deny being the Son of God when Caiaphas asked him if he was?

Answer: No

He did not deny being the Son of God to Caiaphas and he did not deny being the king of the Jews to Pilate. When Jesus said this to the chief priests and Sanhedrin, they thought he was speaking blasphemy, so they condemned him. This can be found in Matthew 26.
4. When Pilate asked the crowd whether to release Barabbas or Jesus, they called for Barabbas. Was this originally the idea of the ordinary people in the crowd?

Answer: No

Matthew says that the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask for Barabbas to be released instead of Jesus. When asked what to do with Jesus the crowd said to crucify him, so Pilate handed Jesus over to them and declared himself innocent of Jesus' blood. This can be found in Matthew 27:20-26.
5. Who urged Pilate to have nothing to do with Jesus' death?

Answer: His wife

Matthew 27:19 says that while Pilate sat on the judge's seat his wife sent him a message that said "Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him." Because of this, when the crowd said to crucify Jesus, Pilate announced that Jesus' blood was to be their responsibility. According to Matthew, the crowd said that it would be on them and their children.

Then Pilate handed Jesus over for crucifixion.
6. Which of the following did the soldiers at the crucifixion NOT do to mock Jesus?

Answer: Clothe him with a red robe

The soldiers took Jesus and stripped him. They made him wear a purple robe and placed a crown of thorns on his head. Then they knelt in from on him and mocked him saying "Hail, king of the Jews". Then, they spit on Jesus and beat him on the head with a staff several times.

Then, they stripped him again and put his own clothes back on him and led him away to be crucified. This can be found in Matthew 27:27-31.
7. The soldiers asked the crowd if someone would carry Jesus' cross the rest of the way to Golgotha. True or false: Simon of Cyrene volunteered to carry it.

Answer: False

Matthew 27 says that, as they were going out to Golgotha, the soldiers saw a man from Cyrene named Simon and forced him to carry the cross. He didn't volunteer, he was forced -- so the answer is false.
8. The Gospels state that, during the crucifixion, from the sixth hour to the ninth there was complete darkness over the land. Does Matthew specifically record anything else happening during the sixth hour?

Answer: No

Although it does say that passers-by did hurl insults at him, it doesn't specifically say that it happened during the sixth hour, so the answer is no. The only thing that is specifically recorded as happening during the sixth hour is that the earth was filled with darkness. This can be found in Matthew 27:45-46.
9. A sign was posted above Jesus' head on the cross that read "JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS" in multiple languages. In how many different languages was it written?

Answer: Three

It was written in three languages: Aramaic, Latin and Greek. When the chief priests saw what was written they went to Pilate and said "Do not write 'The King of the Jews' but that this man claimed to be the king of the Jews." But Pilate responded with "What I have written, I have written." This can be found in John 19:19-22.
10. According to all four Gospels, how many people mentioned by name accompanied Joseph of Arimathea when he took Jesus' body to bury it?

Answer: Three

In John 19 it says that Nicodemus, who had visited Jesus in John 3, accompanied Joseph. In Matthew 27 and Mark 15 it says that Mary Magdalene and the other Mary followed Joseph to the burial site. In Luke 23 it simply says that the women who had followed Jesus were with him.

The only ones mentioned by name are Nicodemus, Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, so the answer is three.
