Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All evangelical Christians are fundamentalists.

Answer: False

Some, but not all, evangelicals are fundamentalists. Fundamentalists are generally considered to be a more conservative subset of evangelicals, but there are also some fundamentalists who wouldn't necessarily be classified as evangelical (such as the Amish). Thus, not all fundamentalists are evangelicals, and not all evangelicals are fundamentalists.
2. Which of the following is _not_ a focus for evangelical Christians?

Answer: Salvation by works

Evangelicals emphasizes Christ's atonement on the cross, rather than works, as the only means of salvation.
3. Most evangelicals maintain the doctrine of Biblical inerrancy.

Answer: True

The doctrine maintains that the Bible is without error in its "original autographs," which allows for the possibility of errors in translation and transmission.
4. Most evangelicals maintain that all passages of the Bible are to be interpreted literally.

Answer: False

Virtually no Christian interprets _all_ passages of the Bible literally. For instance, even fundamentalists interpret Christ's parables figuratively. Evangelicals disagree about whether or not to interpret certain passages literally. For example, while some evangelicals believe in a literal, seven-day creation, others interpret the Genesis creation story more figuratively, allowing for an earth that is millions of years old.
5. The word "evangelical" originates from a Greek word that means what?

Answer: Good news

The Greek word for "good news" or "gospel" is evangelion. The eu prefix means "good" and angelion means "message."
6. All evangelicals are Protestants.

Answer: False

Although the word "evangelical" has generally been used to refer to Protestants, there are also evangelical Catholics. For example, Father Robert Barron uses the term "evangelical Catholic" in his book "The Priority of Christ," and a number of Catholics identify themselves as "evangelical."
7. Which of the following is _not_ considered an essential belief to qualify someone as an "evangelical"?

Answer: Belief in dispensationalism

Although many evangelicals believe in dispensationalism, there are also many who do not. A lack of belief in the orthodox doctrines of virgin birth, resurrection, or Christ's sinlessness, however, would generally be considered non-evangelical. Evangelicals also insist on belief in the crucifixion of Christ as atonement for sins.
8. In the 19th century, most evangelical Christians in the U.S. and Great Britain routinely supported slavery by quoting from the Old Testament, and evangelicals were known for their strong opposition to abolition.

Answer: False

In fact, evangelical Christians were at the forefront of the abolitionist movement, and most abolitionists were evangelical Christians. In the 19th century, evangelicals also campaigned for prison reform and labor reform.
9. A majority of evangelical Christians oppose abortion.

Answer: True

While it is true that most evangelical Christians oppose abortion, evangelicals are not entirely uniform on this and other cultural issues.
10. In the U.S., evangelical churches have a much lower percentage of non-white minority members than mainline churches.

Answer: False

According to the National Survey of Families and Households (conducted from 1987 to 1988), 92 percent of mainline Protestants are white, as compared to only 73 percent of evangelical Protestants.
