Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Botany was systematically organized in Greece circa 370-285 B.C. by which student of Aristotle?

Answer: Theophrastus

Theophrastus took Aristotle's place as the leader of the Lyceum after the death of the master. He is also credited with postulating many of the laws of physics and curiously enough he disproved the notion of Aristotle that heavier objects fall faster than lighter objects.
2. What are the phyto-hormones which influence plant growth and root-elongation generally called?

Answer: auxins

Auxins can be prepared from human urine, yeasts, mold and vegetable oils.
3. What is the simplest design of a plant body?

Answer: single cell

Green algae (Chlorophyta) are an example of this...they are found in unicellular forms, with flagella serving for locomotion, and in multicellular forms, i.e. spirogyra.
4. Which of the following items is a product of the cambium of a plant?

Answer: cork

The cambium of a plant is the ultimate source for phloem, xylem and cork, which grow by division.
5. What substance produced from the plant is used to create its cell walls?

Answer: cellulose

6. The Ascomycetes (sac fungi) produce a species of fungus which is economically useful. The blue-mold or Penicillium in this species is useful in the production of which product?

Answer: cheese

Penicillium roqueforti and penicillium camemberti are quite essential in the production of these cheeses. I can only say these two cheese varieties are god-sent.
7. I generally enjoy picking mushrooms when I see them in the wild. However, there are quite a number of very dangerous wild mushrooms, for example some in the genus called Amanita. Which is not a distinguishing characteristic of the genus Amanita?

Answer: blue-colored rings

The common variety of mushroom is the Agaricus campestris. It has purplish spores and often pink gills and has a broad stem. The mushroom unlike plants lack plastids and are generally made up of hyphae. Most fungi share a symbiotic relationship with other plants.
8. Which of these possesses both animal and plant characteristics?

Answer: Myxomycetes

These slimy fungi have pseudopods or a plasomodia, allowing them to move about like scavengers. But unlike animals they reproduce by spores and do possess cell walls.
9. The Basidiomycetes contain a most useful group of fungi. What food comes from this group of fungi?

Answer: mushrooms

10. What type of plant is described here: the best-adapted creations of evolution, possessing a shoot which bears sporophyll, microphylls and megasporophylls?
