Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you go missing on an expedition after how many consecutive calls missed will an emergency plan be called and carried out to find you?

Answer: 2

A plan will go into action if you fail to answer two calls on your radio after leaving on an expedition. If all is well the call will still be started if you fail to reply. It is advised to return or stay at the last reported location and await contact.
2. Knives and their sheaths are a very important part of a survival kit, but what must you NOT do with the item based on the following statements?

Answer: Hold the sheath on the same side as the cutting edge

Easy really, if you hold the cutting edge in your hand whilst taking it from the sheath you may lose your fingers!
3. What danger will you come across if you see no vegetation or animal remains around a pool of water?

Answer: It's likely to be polluted

It's important to boil any water found for pollution or high levels of mineral input. Always check around the edges of a pool for minerals which could show signs of alkaline conditions.
4. When drinking water after a hard day and a serious thirst how should you drink, especially if water is low in supply?

Answer: Sips

You should take water in sips. If you go a long period without water it is very important not to guzzle the fluid because if you are dehydrated you may vomit and therefore lose even more precious bodily fluid. Sips help the body re-hydrate at a better rate.
5. It's alright to drink sea water if you are really thirsty?

Answer: False

Do not drink sea water! However if it is distilled it can be safe to survive on it and sea water can help with salt intake.

However as a straight fluid intake it is very much a dangerous practise.
6. If you fall into ice cold water what is the best method of survival to absorb that water, should you get to land?

Answer: Roll in snow

If you fall in ice cold water it has the ability to kill you. You will certainly have the breath whacked out of you and your body will suffer from muscular control. You will rapidly lose conciousness and death will result within 15-20 minutes. Get to land as quickly as possible and roll in snow to absorb the water, get some sort of shelter and try to get into dry kit as soon as possible.
7. Which one of the following is NOT dangerous to eat when in the Arctic?

Answer: Bearberry

Beware of Baneberry, Larkspur and Lupin they are well dangerous and must be avoided at all costs, however, the Bearberry will do nicely as long as you cook them through and through.
8. There are two common poisons in the plant world, both are easily traced. One is Hydrocyanic Acid but what is the other?

Answer: Oxalic Acid

If a plant smells of peaches or bitter almonds then discard it, this is a sterling sign of Hydrocyanic Acid. The most common plant that has this poison is the Cherry Laurel.
If the plant you are testing has a stinging or burning sensation on your tongue or skin discard. Wild Rhubarb and Wood Sorrel are two plants commonly found with Oxalic Acid.
9. It is safe to eat the majority of grubs that are found on the underside of leaves.

Answer: False

Grubs found under leaves tend to secrete powerful toxins and can cause serious illness. Grubs are best used as fishing bait.
10. When setting traps which one of these is the odd one out?

Answer: Wangle

As traps go, the mangle works for deadfalls, snares strangle, saplings can take out the aerial prey so it dangles and a net will tangle. One or two combined gives a better chance of catching prey and surviving.
