Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the two kinds of nuclei that a paramecium has?

Answer: Macronucleus and Micronucleus

Other protists also have two nuclei, like the amoeba.
2. What does a contractile vacuole do?

Answer: Gives out excess water

An amoeba does not have a contractile vacuole.
3. The euglena is what kind of protist?

Answer: Plant-like and animal-like

That was kind of a trick question. The euglena uses chlorophyll for photosynthesis and also hunts for food.
4. When an amoeba stretches out its pseudopod and pulls the rest of its body along, what do you call this movement?

Answer: Amoeboid movement

This movement is also used by animals, such as caterpillars.
5. What is a flagellum used for?

Answer: Moving

The flagellum is used for moving. Other ways protists move are by using cilia or pseudopods.
6. What does a paramecium's micronucleus control?

Answer: Reproduction

The micronucleus is quite small compared to the macronucleus. The macronucleus controls daily functions.
7. What color is a stentor?

Answer: Blue-green

The stentor is an animal-like protist. One thing I know that it eats are chilomonas.
8. Where are diatoms usually found?

Answer: In oceans

Diatoms are made of silica, which is used to make glass.
9. What is the red organelle in the euglena called?

Answer: Eyespot

The eyespot detects light and looks for food with it.
10. Dinoflagellates are from what phylum?

Answer: Pyrrophyta

Rhodophyta are red algae. Chlorophyta are green algae. Phaeophyta are brown algae. Did you like that quiz? Thanks for playing it! And before you go, I have a poem for you:

They can smoothen out your ice-cream, and some things that you eat.
They can detect a light beam, and move away in a heartbeat.
They come in many different colors, they come in many shapes.
They are found in watery places, like ponds or oceans or lakes.
They move like bouncy balls, they move like triple-fast trains.
They can sometimes cause some pains.
They can do terrible things, causing malaria and dysentery.
They are absolutely, tremendoulsly, much much smaller than me.
And when you look into the microscope you say, "Wow! Those protists
These things you'll like for the rest of your life. PROTISTS!
