Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll start at number 10. This app will (if you have an account, which you have to pay for) allow you to stream and watch a large selection of movies and TV shows.

Answer: Netflix

Netflix is an American company, which both rents out DVDs and allows users to instantly watch a selection of film. The latter is done primarily from a computer, but the app allows one to do it on an iPhone as well. This app is great for the kids on car trips!
2. Next, number 9. Ever had that annoying experience where you hear a song which you really love, but don't know who it's by or what it's called? This app will fix the problem - it will "listen" to the sounds around you, and then identify the song playing!

Answer: Shazam

Founded in 1999, Shazam (the company) has been the leader of commercial song-recognition software throughout the twenty-first century. The app essentially uses the iPhone's microphone to get a particular sound, and then tries to find a match to the sound in their online database. If it finds a match, it will give the user information tied to that entry in the database - normally the song's title, author, and album title.
3. Number 8 is the free version of the number 1 paid app. It's a game which seems kind of bizarre - in it, you launch different types of birds as projectiles at green pigs.

Answer: Angry Birds Free

Developed by Rovio Entertainment Ltd, the Angry Birds app franchise has enjoyed remarkable success. The players launches birds with different abilities and powers at the green pigs' structures, attempting to essentially crush the pigs into death.
4. Number 7 is quite amazing. In the category of travel, it will let users explore the entire planet, from their phone!

Answer: Google Earth

This service was originally called "EarthViewer 3D" before the company that created it (Keyhole, Inc) was acquired by Google. It is mostly used on computers. The app version was released in late 2008.
5. Number 6 is the app corresponding to the most popular search engine on the web.

Answer: Google Search

The search engine is the most used and most widely known service of its owner, Google Inc. It makes money through displaying advertisements which depend on the query entered by the user. There is quite a lot of controversy surrounding its ability to collect private data about different users and tailor their search results depending on said data.
6. I use Number 5 quite a lot when I'm rushing out of the house and need to decide weather - ahem, whether, that is - or not I need to bring a coat. Its name is "The Weather _______"

Answer: Channel

The Weather Channel is a TV Channel broadcasting weather news and forecasts. The app requires internet access to use. In addition to simply displaying weather forecasts in your area, it allows users to share weather information with their contacts as well as store their favorite locations to quickly check up on weather information around those areas.
7. Number four, under the category "Social Networking," requires Internet access to use as well. It provides free video calling and instant messaging. Please note that it is NOT owned by Apple and the quiz relates to 2007 to 2012.

Answer: Skype

I hope I didn't trick you with the options "Facetime" and "iChat"! Neither of these services are apps, and both of them are owned by Apple. iChat is an application similar to Skype available on computers, and is automatically installed on most Macs upon purchase. Facetime is a in-built application (not available on the App Store) on newer versions of the iPhone, which also allows users to video call others.
8. Number 3 is quite alike the popular board game "Scrabble." It's the free version of an app that is identical to it other than the lack of advertisements. With it, you can test your vocabulary skill against your friends.

Answer: Words with Friends Free

Developed by the extremely large iPhone app maker "Zynga," this game, coupled with its paid version, is the most-played word game app on the App Store. Like most free apps that make money, it produces revenue for Zynga through advertisements.
9. Our number 2 app, only available in the USA, streams music. All you have to do is enter in a genre, artist, or song, and it will play songs similar to your choice.

Answer: Pandora Radio

This app, serving only those in the U.S. for legal reasons, does not allow a user to play a specific song or album. Instead, it compares certain attributes of the user's entry to other songs, and plays songs that match a certain amount of those attributes.
10. This app - the single most popular free app - is the iPhone version of the most popular social networking site on the Web.

Answer: Facebook

Founded by Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook is one of the largest and most successful companies in the world. It makes most of its money from advertisements. The app is extremely user-friendly, and much easier to use than simply accessing Facebook from an iPhone browser.
