Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one is NOT a star Sirius, Polaris, Vega, Orion?

Answer: Orion

Orion is a constellation, the others are stars. Vega is in Lyra and is about 25 light years away, Sirius is in Canis Major and is 8.7 light years away (making it one of the closest stars to our Sun), and Polaris is in Ursa Minor and is currently known as the North Star. So Orion, the constellation, is the one that doesn't fit.
2. Which of Vesta, Callisto, Eros, Pallas is NOT an asteroid?

Answer: Callisto

Callisto is a satellite of Jupiter, 4 Vesta, 433 Eros and 2 Pallas are all main belt asteroids.
3. Which of Omega Nebula, Veil Nebula, Andromeda Galaxy, Triangulum Galaxy is NOT a Messier object?

Answer: Veil Nebula

Had to put one real tough one in here. The difference here is that the Andromeda Galaxy, the Triangulum Galaxy and the Omega Nebula are all Messier objects while the Veil Nebula is not. Charles Messier was a comet hunter that compiled a list of objects to avoid while hunting comets. He is more famous for this list of objects.
4. Which of Vela, Ursa Major, Cepheus, Hercules is in a different hemisphere?

Answer: Vela

They are all constellations, however, Vela (the Sails) is in the Southern hemisphere. Ursa Major (Larger Bear), Cepheus (King) and Hercules (Hercules) are in the North.
5. Which of Io, Titan, Europa, Ganymede is a satellite of a different planet from the others?

Answer: Titan

Titan is a satellite of Saturn, the other three are satellites of Jupiter.
6. Which one of Canopus, Sirius, Arcturus, Polaris doesn't fit with the others due to its magnitude?

Answer: Polaris

This one is on the brightness of the listed stars. Polaris is a 2d magnitude star, the other three have negative magnitudes, this means they are brighter than zero magnitude and some of the brightest stars in the sky. Canopus is -0.72, Sirius is -1.46 and Arcturus is -0.04. Polaris is the 49th brightest star in the sky!
7. Which one of Barnard's star, Deneb, Wolf 359, Sirius is much further away than the other three?

Answer: Deneb

This one is on the distance of the listed stars. Deneb is about 1500 light years away. The other three are less than ten light years away (LYA); Barnard's star is 6 LYA; Wolf 359 7.7 LYA and Sirius is 8.7 LYA.
8. Which one is a different type of star: Vega, Betelgeuse, Antares, Aldebaran?

Answer: Vega

This is on the different types of stars; Betelgeuse (in the constellation of Orion), Antares (Scorpius) and Aldebaran (Taurus) are all red giants, Vega (Lyra) is a main sequence star.
9. Which of these stars does *not* belong to the winter triangle?

Answer: Canopus

Sirius (in Canis Major), Betelguese (Orion) and Procyon (Canis Minor) are the stars of the winter triangle, Canopus (Carina) is not a member of the winter triangle.
10. Which of M31, M51, M81, M32 is a different type of galaxy from the other three?

Answer: M32

Here the difference is the type of galaxy; M31 is a spiral galaxy in Andromeda; M51 is a spiral galaxy in Canes Venatici and M81 is a spiral galaxy in Ursa Major and M32 is an elliptical galaxy in Andromeda (it is a satellite galaxy to M31). M32 being an elliptical makes it the one that doesn't fit the group.
