The XVI Olympic Winter Games were hosted in France between February 8th and February 23rd, 1992. In all, 1,800 athletes competed in 57 events.
2. The Albertville Winter Olympics of 1992 were officially opened by the French President. Who was he?

Answer: François Mitterrand

François Mitterrand was President from May 21st 1981 to May 17th 1995, Charles de Gaulle from January 8th 1959 to April 28th 1969, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing from May 27th 1974 to May 21st 1981, and Nicolas Sarkozy assumed office in 2007. Mitterrand was the first Socialist President of the fifth Republic, but did not have an easy time in office.

His party was almost always a minority and he had to rely on arrangements with other parties. His first term of presidency saw him boost workers rights but he had to battle almost constantly against inflation.

His second term saw him battle against factions from within his own party. Mitterrand was viewed more favourably abroad and had several foreign policy successes, including an enlargement of the European Economic Community.
3. The USA won five gold medals at the Albertville Winter Olympics in 1992, including two by Bonnie Blair. In which discipline did she compete?

Answer: Speed skating

Blair took the golds in the Women's 500 metres and Women's 1,000 metres. Blair also won a gold at Calgary in 1988 and two at Lillehammer in 1994.
The USA won a total of 11 medals at Albertville (five golds, four silvers and two bronzes) and was placed fifth overall in the medals table.
4. The host city for the 1992 Winter Olympics was Albertville, France, but the majority of the events were held in other locations. In which of these ski resorts were the majority of the men's downhill ski events held?

Answer: Val d'Isère

Val d'Isère was the location for the men's downhill, giant slalom, Super G and combined. The men's slalom was held as Les Ménuires and the women's Alpine events at Méribel.
5. Ice hockey is one of the fastest indoor sports around. At the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympic Games, the gold medal was won by a "Unified Team". Which countries combined to make up this team?

Answer: Former Soviet states

Sports men and women from six of the 15 states of the former USSR combined to make up the Unified Team. The states were Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Uzbekistan, and Armenia. The team was second (to Germany)in the medals table, winning nine golds, six silvers and eight bronzes. The Unified Team also took part in the 1992 Summer Olympics.
6. Traditionally there was a four-year gap between the hosting of Winter Olympic Games. The XVI Games were held in Albertville, France in 1992, but then the pattern was broken. How long was it until the next Winter Games were held?

Answer: Two years

Traditionally the summer and winter games were held in the same year. However, 1992 was the last for this to happen after the Olympic Committee decided that the games should be staggered in the "even years" of a decade. To facilitate this, the XVII games (Lillehammer, Norway) were 'brought forward' to 1994, The summer games retained their original pattern.
7. At the Albertville Winter Olympics in 1992, an Italian became the first competitor ever to successfully defend a winter games skiing title. Who was this super skier?

Answer: Alberto Tomba

At Calgary in 1988, Tomba won the giant slalom gold (and also the slalom gold) and won the giant slalom gold (and silver in the slalom) at Albertville. It was to be the Italian's last Olympic gold. Four years later, he took the slalom and giant slalom golds at the World Championships in Sierra Nevada. Between 1987 and 1992, he won 50 Wold Cup races (in slalom and GS).
8. Toni Nieminen became the youngest gold medalist at a Winter Olympics up to that point, when he took two ski jump titles at Albertville in 1992. Which country did he represent?

Answer: Finland

Nieminen was just 17 when he was part of the Finnish squad that won the team ski K120 event. In individual events he won a gold and a bronze. Don't laugh at the thought of Swaziland taking part in the Winter Olympics, they made their debut at Albertville in 1992, as did Algeria, Bermuda, Brazil, Honduras and Ireland.
9. Marc Girardelli won two silver medals at the Albertville Winter Olympics in 1992. Which country not usually noted for its snow sports did he represent?

Answer: Luxembourg

Giradelli took silvers in the slalom and giant slalom. He was, in fact, born in Austria and early in his career represented his native land. Then he had a disagreement over coaching methods and switched his allegiance to Luxembourg.
The three 'wrong' answers' were all countries that competed in Albertville.
10. Which of these events was introduced as a competitive sport for the first time at the Albertville Winter Olympics in 1992?

Answer: Moguls skiing

Just six medals were up for grabs in the men's and women's events. France and the USA each took one gold.
Curling and speed skiing were demonstration sports. Curling became accepted as an official sport in 1998. Speed skiing's bid was marred by the death of a competitor at the '92 games. Speed skiing should not be confused with downhill skiing. In speed skiing, competitors race straight downhill - without turning. At Albertville, the demonstration event was won by Michael Prufer of France, who recorded 229 kilometers an hour (142mph).
